Antiquariatsmesse Stuttgart 2021 - Katalog
Tokyo. Tokyo Shisei Zuhyo [Graphic Illustration
of Tokyo City]. By Mitsuyoshi Ohashi. 44
pages: comprised of Japanese text surrounded by
colour-printed graphs, charts, maps, illustrated
vignettes, etc. Folio, 443 × 307 mm, bound western-style
in navy blind-patterned cloth, in the
original printed cardboard slipcase. Tokyo: Kyoto
Insatsu Kabushiki Kaisha, 1935. € 7500,–
A classic in the development of the isotype technique
in depicting information via coloured illustration or
pictograms. The isotype (International System of Typographic
Picture Education) was developed in Vienna
between 1925 and 1934, which made its way to Japan
quickly. It makes perfect sense from a language perspective
that Japanese publishers, wishing for a broader
audience, would adopt the new scientific isotype as a
method of information transfer. The essence of isotype
publications is the „transformation“ of complex information
into self-explanatory visual charts or diagrams.
OCLC finds one copy at Columbia. A clean and crisp
copy in a worn cardboard slipcase.
Roth, Dieter. Kinderbuch. 28 pp. With colour illustrations
throughout. 4to., 320 × 320 mm, in publisher’s
ring-bound illustrated boards, in a new
cloth folding box. Reykjavik, Iceland: Forlag Ed,
1957. € 12 500,–
Dieter Roth’s first book, „Kinderbuch“ [Children’s
Book], which he designed himself, was initially produced
as a unique work, made in 1954 for the German
dramatist and concrete poet Claus Bremer’s son.
Bremer returned the book to the artist and suggested
that Roth try to have it published. Some minor wear,
but generally a fine copy of this outstanding rarity.
From the Library of Walter Bareiss with his bookplate
by George Baselitz (signed).
This is one of 75 unsigned copies. There were also 25
signed copies with cut-outs. Not listed on OCLC.

York: Tiber Press, 1960. € 5000,–
An immaculate set of these outstanding post-war
American artist’s books, featuring collaborations between
four of the most influential American poets
of the second half of the twentieth century, and four
important second generation New York School artists.
Each is one of an edition of 200 copies, signed by the
poet and the artist.
Dubuffet, Jean. Le Mirivis des Naturgies. By André
Martel and Jean Dubuffet. 48 pp. Illustrated with 16
original lithographs by Dubuffet, of which 14 are
loose, one is on the wrappers and one on the slipcase.
4to., 290 × 230 mm, bound in original illustrated
wrappers, black chemise and illustrated slipcase. In a
new red cloth folding box. Paris: Alexandré Loewy,
1963. € 12 500,–
An important example of Dubuffet’s considerable skill
as a bookmaker. Dubuffet was the founder of Art
Brut movement of the forties, and his lithographs for
Le Mirivis des Naturgies are still very much in that
style. Dubuffet supplied these 16 original coloured
lithographs, some executed in as many as 7 colours. As
was the case with most of his books, the text is lithographed
from his handwritten manuscript. This is one
of the 110 copies signed by the author Martel and the
artist Dubuffet.
[Pop Art]. Stamped Indelibly. Edited by William
Katz. With fifteen rubber-stamp prints by various
artists including Robert Creeley, Allen Ginsberg,
Robert Indiana, Andy Warhol, and Tom Wesselmann
among others. 4to., bound in original linen.
New York: Indianakatz, 1967. € 10 000,–
William Katz wanted to create a book using as modest
and simple a technique as possible. He asked his
Pop artist writer friends to design commercially made
rubber stamps which he then hand printed to create
this book. The book consists of a title-page and 15
rubber-stamped images printed in color and black-andwhite.
Each print is signed and dated by the artist except
for the prints by Grooms, Koch, and Warhol which are
signed in rubber stamps. One of 225 copies signed by
William Katz on the colophon page. An immaculate
copy of what is now a very scarce book.
Johns, Jasper. Fizzles. By Samuel Beckett. Unpaginated.
Illustrated with a total of 34 original illustrations,
including lift-ground aquatints, dry-point
etchings, and soft-ground etchings by Johns, printed
by Crommelynck in Paris. Small folio, 333 × 253
mm, bound in original plain wrappers, laid into
publisher’s white cloth box, lined with two brightly-coloured
original lithographs by Johns. [London:
Petersburg Press], 1976. € 32 500,–
This is probably the most talked-about illustrated artist’s
book of the past 40 years.
This is a clean copy, virtually without the detrimental
offsetting that mars so many copies, except for the
slightest outline on the blank page opposite one plate.
Copies in this condition are becoming increasingly
hard to find. Some insignificant spotting on the cover
of the box. One of an edition of 250 copies signed by
Beckett and Johns.
