ca. 1750). Illustrated manuscript on paper, obl. 4to
(155 × 205 mm), contemporary wrappers with
colored paper. Text in German, altogether 25 leaves
(numbered 1–27, and 3 blanks), all of them containing
drawings with figures partly handcolored,
apparently lacking leaves numbered 7, 22, 24, leaves
14 and 21 are double-page. The last leaf depicts different
units of measurement for cities in southern
Germany and Austria (Strasbourg, Nuremberg,
Salzburg, Wien, Innsbruck) with text below „Rechte
leng dess Halben Werckschueh der hie benandten
ohrt ieder in VI zoll abgetailth ist“. € 1800,–

(the leaf 302 × 193 mm), 2 works in one volume,
attractively bound in a medieval manuscript parchment
leaf with gilt-illuminated initial in gold. Vegetius:
Title printed within architectural border, with a
large woodcut by Hans Weiditz, depicting a military
council conferring in front of a tent, full-page woodcut
of a Landsknecht on A2v, 101 leaves (lacking
the last blank), gothic letter, double columns, text
completely illustrated with 121 beautiful full-page
woodcuts, a good copy with vivid imprints. Ziegler:

Vegetius: Very rare, early edition of this German translation
of the 4th cent. latin treatise on ancient warfare,
discussing the recruitment and training of soldiers, how
to organise a legion, strategy and tactics, siege techniques,
the construction of war engines. The woodcuts
are based on the cuts used in the 1511 Erfurt edition
of the same work (figuring catapults, battering rams,
diving suits, special boots, swords, shields, etc.) deriving
in turn from those of 1472 Verona first edition of
Valturius’s De re militari, by Matteo de Pasti. VD16 V
466; Fairfax Murray German 420. – Ziegler: Collection
of vehement attacks on the teachings of the Bohemian
Brothers (later known as „Unitas Fratrum“), edited
and partly written by Jacob Ziegler (c. 1480–1549),
the renowned Bavarian mathematician, geographer
and theologian. He dedicates the volume, which is his
first book to appear in print, to the Bishop of Olmütz
(Olomouc), Stanislaus Thurzo. The first two letters
are addressed to King Ladislaus in Hungary, and two
letters by the bishop are dated from Buda. The book
is also one of the earliest Leipzig imprints in Roman
type. It is very rare on the market, especially if complete
with the second leaf, which is blank except for ten lines
„Protestacio“ on verso. Panzer VII, 175, 372; Apponyi,
