Peace and Harmony above

Edmonton(ATB):” The

major takeaway from

our panel discussion

regarding India’s Farm

Bills, Farmer’s

U K COVID 19 variant

found way to Alberta

Edmonton (ATB) :

Alberta has confirmed

one case of the

COVID-19 variant in a

person who recently

arrived from the United

Kingdom.

Chief Medical Officer

of Health Dr. Deena

Hinshaw confirmed the

case during an in-person

update this week.

"The good

news is that this individual

did everything

they were supposed to

do, following quarantine,

and other public

health measures, and

at this point there is no

evidence that there

has been any further

spread," Hinshaw said.

"It is important to remember

that the public

health measures

that are in place are

protective against this

variant and the best

thing that we can do to

protect each other is to

follow them."

Alberta

Health Services is currently

working to get

flight details and a passenger

list for the flight

the person was on, so

that any passengers

who may have been

seated in nearby rows

who are now in Alberta

can be contacted.

"There's a

time delay between

HAPPY NEW

YEAR TO ALL

THE READERS

when that individual

arrived and when the

symptoms began, and

so it's something that's

a theoretical possibility

of transmission, so we

are going to be following

up specifically with

individuals who were

seated in close rows

but again, at the moment,

we have looked

at the situation and

believe the risk is very

low," Hinshaw said.

C a n a d a

halted flights from the

U.K. last week in an

effort to stop transmission

of the virus variant.

Asian

Star

Native Village/Country parent’s

background

I was born and raised in Jahanabad village,

in the district of East Midnapore, West

Bengal, India (about 130 km from Kolkata).

My father was a school teacher and my

mother was a house wife. Our family also

does farming and local business.

Your Early Education

I did my schooling at Kalagachia Jagadish

Vidyapith (one of the few National schools in

West Bengal set up during the freedom

movement to fight the BritishRule). I then

completed myBE in Electronics and

Communication Engineering from the

National Institute of Technology, Durgapur,

and MEfrom the IIEST, Shibpur. A few years

later, I did my M.Sc. and Ph.D. at the

University of Ottawa, Canada.

When & Why You came to Canada

After doing my post graduation in India, I

joined the Indian Space Research

Organization (ISRO), Ahmedabad as a

scientist/engineer. While working there, I was

offeredaCanadian Commonwealth

Fellowshipby the Government of Canada to

do my PhD. That’s how I landed in Ottawa in

the early Nineties. After completing my PhD,

I adopted Canada as my new homeland.

Your career advancement initiatives and

present occupation

After my Engineering education in India, I was

fortunate enough to have the opportunity to

work in ISRO. In Canada, after doing my PhD,

I joined the University of Alberta as a tenuretrack

Assistant Professor, where I am a full

Professor now.Like other professors, I spend

my time in undergraduate and graduate

teaching, research and associated

professional activities e.g. writing books,

editing journals, organizing conferences, etc.

My research focuses on developing artificial

intelligence techniques for medical diagnosis,

and I collaborate extensively with doctors at

the University of Alberta Hospital and Cross

Cancer Institute. In addition, I have always

been involved with many community

organizations in Canada. While doing my

graduate studies, I was a board member of

Deshanatri of Ottawa-Carleton (a Bengali

association), Ottawa. In Edmonton, I have

served Edmonton Bengali Association and

Ankur Multicultural Association for Performing

Arts as Presidents and Board members. I am

associated with the Council of India Societies

of Edmonton for the past 20 years and

currently serving as its President. This allows

me to remain connected with my Indian roots.

Your Regret in Life

I have no regrets whatsoever. In the early

Mrinal Mandal

days in Canada, I used to

miss India and working for my

Motherland. But now I am

deeply connected with the

Indian communities here, and

I also have close research

collaboration with universities

in India. Involving in these

activities is akin to serving the

Motherland, and I am now

quite content.

Pick Any One of Your Best

Achievements

Starting from a remote village

in West Bengal and reaching

the stage where I am now – it

has been a long and exciting

journey, with many important

milestones on the way. I

would not want to single out

any of my educational or

professional achievements.

Balancing well good

familyand professional lives

while serving the

communities is what I

consider to be my best achievement.

Were You Ever Discriminated?

Life has been very kind to me. During my stints

at different places, such as Durgapur,

Ahmedabad, Ottawa, and Edmonton, I have

been surrounded by excellent friends,

colleagues andsuperiors. I have never felt any

sort of discrimination.

Are You Happy in Canada?

Yes, absolutely. I have so many fond

memories starting from the day I arrived in

Canada about three decades back. This

country has given me so much and enriched

my life in every possible way. Also, with a

strong presence of the Indo-Canadian

communities, I am getting the best of both

Canadian and Indian cultures.

Any Comments on Canada’s Culture

In most global surveys, Canada has always

been in the top two or three countries in the

world to live in, and for all the right reasons.

People here are honest and there is freedom

at workplace. Multiculturalism is in-grained

and encouraged in Canadian culture. All

immigrants, irrespective of their background,

feel welcomed here.

Any Comments on Canada’s Weather

There is no denying that Canadian Winter

issomewhat depressing, especially for people

like me who isfrom tropical weather. However,

I am on optimist and always see the glass halffull.

The summer is very beautiful here,

especially with the Rocky mountain near by. I

also do a few short trips to warmer destinations

(personal and business) during the winter

months to recharge myself.

What Brought You Success in Canada?

Hard work, perseverance,sincerity, honesty

are perhaps some traits that brought me

career success in India as well as here in

Canada. The family plays a very vital role

and for that matter, I give full credit to my

family members and friends, and especially

my wife, Ms. Rupasri Mandal. The Indian

communities in Edmonton have also played

a vital role by providing the much needed

oxygen to grow my roots here.

Are You Willing to Help New Immigrants

and How?

Through the Council of India Societies of

Edmonton, we are already being helping

new immigrants to settle in Canada and to

become part of the Indian diaspora. Also,

as a professor at the University of Alberta, I

help a large number of newcomers, majority

of them from India, to choose appropriate

study and career paths.

Your Message for Canadians of Asian

Origin

Canada is our new home, and so imbibe

the good Canadian values, and become a

good citizen. Keeping ourrich spiritual values

and progressive beliefs are also important.

Canada has become a Global village. Live

in harmony and respect everybody’s faith

and beliefs. Canada has given us a good

quality of life –so we shouldgive back to the

society whenever we can.

Highly infectious, not more lethal

New Delhi (ATB)- The six UK returnees, who

tested positive for the mutated virus, are largely

asymptomatic and not too sick as the strain is not

known to cause severe disease. Rakesh Mishra,

Director, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology

(CCMB), Hyderabad, one of the 10 labs in

the national genome sequencing consortium tracking

Covid positive UK returnees, today said the

variant “is not worse than the others and clinically

does not present different or severe symptoms,

but it is much more transmissible”. “Most people

with the mutant strain are asymptomatic as is the

case with normal strain where 80 per cent cases

are mild,” he said. Of the six passengers with the

variant, three were tested at NIMHANS,

Bengaluru, two at CCMB, Hyderabad and one at

NIV, Pune. Mishra said the variant had a greater

capacity to infect people and that was a matter of

concern as India witnessed second largest number

of cases after the US and variants could

emerge from within the country as well.

India gets its first indigenous

pneumonia vaccine

New Delhi,

(ATB)- Health Minister

Harsh Vardhan today

launched India’s first

pneumococcal conjugate

vaccine (PCV)

called “Pneumosil”,

developed by the Serum

Institute of India

(SII).

Noting that Serum Institute

was the world’s

largest manufacturer

of vaccines by doses,

immunised with SII

vaccines.

New strain reaches India, 6 UK returnees +ve

New Delhi (ATB)- India

Getting back at China

THE Indian government’s decision

to informally tell airlines not to fly

Chinese nationals into the country is

not merely a precautionary measure

aimed at checking the spread of Covid-

19. There is more to it than meets the

eye, even as China had suspended all

special air operations from India with

effect from early November, citing the

rising number of coronavirus cases on

Vande Bharat Mission flights. The eightmonth-old

border standoff has impacted

India-China dealings in myriad

ways. Last week, the External Affairs

Ministry expressed concern over two

cargo vessels with a total of 39 Indians

on board being on anchorage in Chinese

waters for months as these were

not being allowed to unload their shipment,

though some other ships had

managed to do so.

One of these vessels, MV Jag

Anand, stranded near Jingtang port in

Hebei province since June, is carrying

a huge consignment of Australian coal.

Despite repeated requests, China is

neither allowing the ships to be docked

nor their crew to be changed, while insisting

that it is only adhering to the

stipulations on quarantine measures.

China’s claim that these developments

are not linked to its strained ties with

India as well as Australia does not hold

water. Last month, China had taken

exception to Australia’s decision to take

part in the Malabar naval exercise that

also featured India, the US and Japan.

With Canberra barring Chinese

telecom giant Huawei from its national

5G network over security concerns,

besides raising the pitch for an international

inquiry into the origin of the

virus, Beijing has retaliated by restricting

several Australian exports, including

coal.

India’s latest move will hurt

China’s business interests as the

latter’s nationals have been travelling

to this country for work and trade purposes

even during the pandemic.

Though India has made a statement by

imposing travel curbs, it needs to redouble

efforts to end the maritime stalemate

and provide relief to the harried

crew members. New Delhi should go

all out to expose the double standards

being adopted by Beijing while implementing

Covid-19 regulations.

A resilient democracy must look beyond binaries

Ashwani Kumar

Former Union Minister for Law & Justice

THE nation has witnessed an unprecedented

agitation by farmers over the past several

weeks against what are widely perceived

as unjust farm laws rushed through by the

Central Government. The sight of farmers —

peacefully voicing their conscientious opposition

to these laws — being subjected to tear

gas shells and water cannons has shamed the

nation. The use of the State’s brute power

against distraught farmers exercising their fundamental

right of peaceful protest represents

the ugly face of a dysfunctional democracy. It

is a painful reminder of the Pagri Sambhal Jatta

and the Champaran satyagraha movements

led by Sardar Ajit Singh, the uncle of Shaheed

Bhagat Singh, and Mahatma Gandhi, respectively,

against the unjust agrarian laws imposed

on a subject nation by the British colonialists.

In reminding us that might without justice is

tyrannical, these movements provided the

foundational basis of free India’s republican

charter. Tragically, it has fallen upon the heroic

and venerated farming community of our country

to remind the ruling dispensation of the lessons

learnt under colonial rule.

Widespread opposition to the new

laws across the nation, with several political

parties announcing their support to the farmers,

speaks for itself. Law, we are told, is the

perfection of reason and as French philosopher

Montesquieu reminded us, “it matters not

whether individuals reason well or ill; it is sufficient

that they do reason. Truth arises from the

collision, and from hence springs liberty, which

is a security from the effect of reasoning…”

Thus, laws untested in a free exchange

of ideas and robbed of their moral and democratic

legitimacy can have no claim to obedience

by the people. The alienation of the dominant

community in the country, including in the

border state of Punjab that has for long borne

the brunt of terrorism and insurgency sponsored

from across the border, could destabilise

peace in the state and adversely impact national

security. However, instead of a meaningful

and receptive conversation with a community

in distress, an obdurate government is

persisting in fallacy by resisting a demand for

the repeal of laws premised on the basis that

their enactment as Central laws is an impermissible

encroachment on the states’ exclusive

legislative domain. There is also a legitimate

apprehension that incorporation of necessary

changes within the existing legislative framework

would lead to legal ambiguities, which will

be counterproductive. The Supreme Court’s

insipid intervention, in the meantime, limited

thus far only to a declaration of pious intent,

has brought neither hope nor succour to the

bravehearts. The recent Congress-led protest

march to Rashtrapati Bhawan in support of the

protesting farmers resulted in the detention of

political leaders — a painful betrayal of the

founding fathers’ vision of freedom in a responsive

democracy.The agitation reaffirms that

only through an assertion of people’s power

through mass mobilisation can we secure the

promise of an egalitarian democracy, when

confronted with the State’s brazen disdain for

popular sensitivities. Empathy for the agitating

farmers shows that freedom and justice survive

in the consciousness of the people and a

democratic nation’s political narrative is located

in the people’s assertion against injustice. It

tells us that every Indian matters and matters

equally; that human conscience cannot be suppressed

forever and that the first step towards

healing is in the sharing of pain. The lasting

message of the movement is that a humiliated

people fighting for their dignity carry a far

greater emotional weight than the temptations

www.asiantribune.ca. Also, follow us on twitter @AsianTribuneEdm

offered by those hung on power and hanging

around the ‘skirts of majesty’. It tells us that

the uncoerced allegiance of a proud people can

be ensured only through just laws. As to the

government’s claim that contested laws are in

farmers’ interest, we know from Pascal that

“people are generally better persuaded by the

reasons which they have themselves discovered

than by those which have come into the

mind of others.” Hopefully, the ruling dispensation

will remind itself that those who do not learn

from history are condemned by it. The agitation

by the farmers is a watershed in the history

of our democratic evolution and reminds

us that a resilient democracy needs to look

beyond the binaries and recognise shades of

grey. We can ill afford divisive politics that limits

our capacity as a nation. Neither can we

condone a fading sense of compassion that

defines our humanity. A nation yearning to play

its rightful role in the shaping of a new world

order based on inalienable human rights must

locate its future in an elevating politics committed

to inclusion, justice and dignity for all.

Lest the protesters’ anger, anguish and

a sense of hopelessness result in their irreversible

alienation, the government must answer

their call in a spirit of paternal acceptance of

their just demands. Our farmers, after all, represent

the soul of India, as the Father of the

Nation never tired of reminding us. The alternative

is an unthinkable foray into a spiral of

extreme disaffection and unrest. Consider the

loud echo of this verse of Majaz Lakhnawi in

the context of the agitating farmers:

Dil mein ek shola bhadak utha hai aakhir kya

karun

Mera paimaana chhalak utha hai aakhir kya

karun

Zakhm seene ka mahak utha hai aakhir kya

karun

Ai gham-e-dil kya karun ai vahshat-e-dil kya

karun

(Within my heart an ember has burst into

flames, what, after all, can I do?

My goblet is full, it spills over, what, after all,

can I do?
