members of the “Verbund der Mecklenburger
Ernte” (Mecklenburg Harvesting Association), a
producer organisation with nearly 30 companies
producing fresh vegetables and fruit for proceszu

Imker und Naturschutzbeauftragter im Unter -
nehmen. Steinhaufen am Feldrand, Fledermauskästen,
Stangen für Greifvögel, Blühflächen von
mehr als 150 Hektar und eine Imkerei mit 100 Bienenvölkern
– bei BEHR gibt es viele Initiativen zur
Nachhaltigkeit. Während 250 Mitarbeiter ganz -
jährig für volle Regale in den Gemüseabteilungen
der Supermärkte tätig sind, unterstützen rund
1000 Erntehelfer die „heiße Phase“. Allein 40 Mil -
lionen Köpfe Eisbergsalat werden pro Jahr manuell
geschnitten und bereits auf dem Feld verpackt.

Lebensmitteleinzelhandel angefordert wird. So
garantieren wir absolute Frische“, bestätigt Marketingchef
Birger Exner.

after all. This is boring, even for bees”, says Uwe
Leidemann, beekeeper and the company’s conservation
expert. Piles of stones at the edge of the
fields, nesting houses for bats, rods for birds of prey,
more than 150 hectares of wild flowers and an
apiary with over 100 colonies of bees: BEHR has
plenty of sustainability initiatives. While 250 employees
ensure that supermarket shelves in the
fruit and vegetable departments are kept full all
year round, roughly 1,000 harvest workers help out
during the critical phase. 40 million heads of iceberg
lettuce are cut manually every year and
packed before leaving the field. “Each day, we only
harvest as much as needed to fulfil the demand
from food stores. In this way, we can guarantee
that the produce is absolutely fresh”, confirms
Birger Exner, Head of Marketing.
