11th Magdeburg Seminar on Waters in Central and Eastern Europe: Assessment,
Protection, Management
The organisation committee is pleased to announce the 11th Magdeburg Seminar on Waters in
Central and Eastern Europe: Assessment, Protection, Management 18 - 22 October 2004 at the
UFZ-Centre for Environmental Research in Leipzig Our traditional, prior binational Czech-German
meetings increasingly appeared as too limited to face future problems of river catchments and their
management on European level. By enlarging the scope of thematic topics and participating
countries, especially in Central and Eastern Europe for EU-candidates, we respond to the future
scientific needs in the field of water protection and management of river basins.

SEFS V: Symposium of European Freshwater Societies
I’d like to inform you on the progress that has been made in our search for right people and a right
place for SEFS V in Poland. The place would be Krakow, quite a pleasant medieval town merely
100 km from the magnificent alpine lakes of Tatra Mountains, the old capital of Poland.
The SEFSV would precede or follow (more likely) the Xth Congress of the European Society
for Evolutionary Biology held at the Jagiellonian University, Cracow, from 15 to 20 August
2005, and chaired by Prof. Dr. hab. Jan Kozlowski (www.eko.uj.edu.pl/index_en.html). It is also
likely that it would be just in time to jump over to Lunzer Untersee in Austria to celebrate the
anniversary of one of the oldest European Limnological Field Stations
