Vortrag: Singularity of the Qânûn as a micro-tonal instrument by excellence and
problematic of musical notations based on common outdated theories as 24 quarter tons, 53
holderien commas, 72 Chrysantos commas, and presentation of my two just-intonation systems
based on Pythagorean and spectral ratios.
Description and critique of different Qânûn tuning systems in Arabic and Turkish music: 1. The
Egyptian modern tuning system with a double apotome divided in 4 tempered quarter-tones (5
notes from flat to sharp on each string) and 24 tempered quarter-tones in one octave. – 2. The
Syrian Aleppo system: a double tempered apotome divided in 10 unequal intervals (11 unequal
notes from flat to sharp on each string) and 53 unequal intervals in one octave (Sheikh Ali
Darwish). – 3. The Turkish system: a double tempered apotome divided in 12 equal intervals (13
notes from flat to sharp) 72 notes in one octave (Chrysantos), in contradiction with the official
Turkish holderien 53 commas theory. – 4. Presentation of the different tuning systems of my two
Qânûn prototypes in just intonation based on 14 pythagorean apotomes divided in 7 unequal
intervals: System no1: 81/80, 245/243, 3159/3136, 144/143, 121/120, 100/99, 81/80; System no2:
81/80, 105/104, 572/567, 144/143, 1547/1536, 120/119, 81/80. (15 notes from flat to sharp in each
string) and presentation of the 15 symbols used for my transcription of Arabic and Turkish music
as well as contemporary music.
Vortrag: Zur Emanzipation der Konsonanz. Das Repertoire der nach Gehör stimmbaren
Intervalle
ein Modell der harmonischen Perzeption unseres Sensoriums (“John Cage and the Theory of
