Vortrag: Modal system (Makam) and style in Turkish art music.
Turkish music consists of a vast mixture of musical styles. All these styles have been roughly

) genre, which includes the
music of the Ottoman court, the Mevlevi ceremonies and the urban music styles of Istanbul and
other urban areas of the Ottoman empire. The heterophonic TSM genre is described theoretically
by a 53 equal commas per octave temperament. This temperament results in a 9 commas tone
which therefore has two unequal semitones of 4 and 5 commas.
In this presentation, the following topics will be discussed: TSM’s style: Ascending descending
attraction, “moveable” notes (clusters) and “stable” ones. – The “Seyir” (path): Paths of the modes
and melodic development. – Ornamentation – Differences of the TSM system with the rest of the
eastern Mediterranean music genres (e.g. Byzantine, Arabic) as a result of the different division of
the scale, ornamentation, the seyir approach, ascending descending attraction. – Possibilities of
integrating harmony in the TSM genre.
