International Conference on Nonsmooth/Nonconvex Mechanics with applications
in Engineering
Greece, Thessaloniki
The Department of Civil Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
organizes an International Conference on International Conference on
Nonsmooth/Nonconvex Mechanics with applications in Engineering in memoriam of
the late Professor P. D. PANAGIOTOPOULOS (1950-1998) to be held at the Aristotle
University of Thessaloniki (A.U.Th.), Thessaloniki, Greece, July 5-6, 2002.
The Conference is aiming at the presentation of original high level unpublished
research works in the various areas of Nonsmooth Mechanics, including this of the
applications in Engineering.
Topics
• Contact Mechanics
• Friction and stick-slip effects
• Elastoplasticity
• Shakedown - Limit analysis
• Convex Analysis and Mechanics
• Nonsmooth Analysis and Optimization
• Nonconvex Mechanics and Duality
• Variational, quasivariational and hemivariational inequalities
• Energy methods in Mechanics and Structural Analysis
• Nonsmooth Dynamics
• Structural Optimization
• Structural Control and Identification
• Mathematical Analysis and Approximation results
• Innovative topics (like Chaotic behaviour, Fractal approximation, Neural Networks
etc.)
Developing a theory in Mechanics, convenient assumptions are adopted; for instance,
'smoothness' of all involved energy functions being the requirement that all derivatives
where needed, are continuous functions. However, nature is nonsmooth. Due to lack or
inconvenience of the corresponding mathematical modelling and computation tools, the
transition from Smooth into Nonsmooth Mechanics took several decades. Today the
latter is a well-established scientific branch with exciting prospects of applications into
Engineering Mechanics and Structural Engineering.
The International Conference on Nonsmooth/Nonconvex Mechanics will reflect the
state-of-the-art developments of this scientific area. The Conference is dedicated to the
late Professor Panagiotis D. Panagiotopoulos, one of the pioneer researchers who made
a plethora of fundamental contributions into the field of Nonsmooth Mechanics.
