“Leipzig liest” aims to act as a marketing strengthener for the Book Fair
participation of the publisher. Every exhibitor is entitled to take part in
sthe programme – enabling even smaller publishers without a lavish PR
budget to avail of a showcase that attracts broad attention. An enthusias-
tic public and the practically unlimited reservoir of distinctive event loca-
tions transform the city into an ideal platform, particularly for independ-
ents who enjoy experimenting and their young authors. And this event is
not just a rendezvous for the great names. “Leipzig liest”, with its contin-
ually surprising formats, has long become a springboard for the most
promising up-and-coming talent in the German-speaking world.
The result is a reading marathon which is difficult to equal: more than
2000 events with around 1,500 authors – thronging the halls of the Trade
Fair during the day and evident in the evenings in around 300 locations in
the city. Whether crime thrillers in the regional court, lyric poetry in the
Gohlis Palace or audio book nights in the Alte Handelsbörse merchants’
exchange – the Fair and Reader Festival are as colourful and varied as

the world of books itself. The best evidence for the success of a concept
dedicated to a living, reader-orientated book fair is the fact that it has been
adopted with enthusiasm both at home and abroad. But the original has a
unique flair – and a voyage of discovery to Leipzig is always worthwhile!
