Biomass is a decisive factor for many European countries to<br />
ensure sustainable power supply.<br />
An important aspect for operation of biogas plants is safety.<br />
This includes also the necessity of lightning and surge<br />
protection.<br />
Principally, the German Directive for Explosion Protection<br />
BRG 104 has to be observed for areas of biogas plants where<br />
explosive atmospheres can arise.<br />
BGR 104 defines lightning as a source of ignitions. The rules<br />
of explosion protection require to take appropriate<br />
protection measures against lightning hazards. Especially<br />
due to their wide expansion, location, structure and due<br />
to the use of modern measuring and control technology,<br />
the function of a biogas plant is threatened considerably<br />
by surges caused by lightning or switching. Lightning strokes<br />
into a fermenter of a biogas plant can cause risks for living<br />
beings and the environment.<br />
In order to avoid such hazards and to ensure a permanent<br />
availability of the entire biogas plant, protective measures<br />
against lightning currents and surges are necessary, which<br />
are designed according to the acceptable risk. IEC 81/264/FDIS<br />
(IEC 62305-3) requires a lightning protection system type II<br />
for buildings and installations with explosive areas which<br />
also include biogas plants.<br />
The costs of lightning and surge protection measures are<br />
out of all proportion to the very high expenses for the<br />
maintenance work to be performed after suffering damage.<br />
Not to mention the costs arising in case of a process standstill.<br />
External and internal lightning protection measures must<br />
be taken in order to ensure a safe and uninterrupted<br />
operation of a biogas plant. <strong>DEHN</strong> + SÖHNE offers approved<br />
