The eight entrants in the town-planning competition
faced a complex task. Despite the existence
of ambient noise and odorous emissions,
the brief was to design attractive
outdoor spaces and a variety of house typologies
for a wide range of different groups
of users. Entrants were tasked with designing
buildings that would mediate between
the large industrial buildings to the west of
Georg-Wilhelm-Strasse and the small houses
and residential buildings on Peter-Beenck-
Strasse. The neighbourhood is to be developed
gradually and offer flexible options to
include shops and services.
The 13-strong jury headed by Munich architect
Christof Wallner awarded 1st prize to
the work submitted by the Hamburg architects’
office czerner göttsch and WES & Partner
landscape architects. 2nd prize went to
the team comprising Spengler • Wiescholek,
architects planners, and Kontor Freiraumplanung
(open space planning), both from Hamburg.
