Bereits 700.000 Besucher erlebten
Auswanderung im Deutschen Auswandererhaus
hautnah. Gehen oder Bleiben? Haben Sie
sich das auch schon gefragt? Sei es für einen
besseren Arbeitsplatz, sei es für die Liebe
oder sei es aus purer Abenteuerlust: Auswandern
ist wieder hochaktuell – auch für
Deutsche. Jedes Jahr verlassen rund 150.000
sieben Millionen historischen Auswanderer,
die in Bremerhaven Abschied von Europa nahmen?
Gehen Sie auf eine Zeitreise und lernen
Sie die Beweggründe der Auswanderer kennen.
Close to 700,000 visitors have already
experienced emigration at the German Emi-
gration Center. Leave or stay? Have you ever
asked yourself this question? In search of a better
job, following the call of the heart or simply
a thirst for adventure? Today, emigration
is once again a top issue – yes, for Germans
too. An estimated 150,000 Germans leave
the country every year. Do their thoughts
and feelings differ that greatly from those of
the seven million historic emigrants who left
Europe via Bremerhaven headed for the New
World? Embark on a trip back in time, understand
the various reasons for their leaving.
In
Beginning with the 2008/2009 school year special tours of the
museum suited to this young age group and featuring playful
elements can be booked. As in play-acting, children slip into the
role of an historic emigrant and that person‘s living circumstances.
Whereas the younger children (ages 5 to 7) play out elementary
scenes such as passport control or cooking and eating on board a
ship, the older children (ages 8 to 11) try their hand at recapturing
the feelings of farewell scenes and the hope the emigrants had.
Auf den Spuren der Vergangenheit besuchte
am 29. Mai 2008 der „Pommersche Verein
– Central Wisconsin“ aus den USA das Deutsche
Auswandererhaus.
The Pommerscher Verein – Central Wisconsin
visited the German Emigration Center on
May 29, 2008, tracing the roots of emigrated
ancestors. In addition to a tour of the museum
the 40 Americans of German origin received
expert instruction in how to use the research
facilities offered by the museum‘s genealogical
databases.
That evening, a fascinating encounter
unfolded. The visitors from Wisconsin, all
speaking platt or Low German, met people
from Bremerhaven and surroundings, who
also speak Low German. Together they
watched the premiere of Sibirien op Platt
– 100 Jahre deutsche Dörfer (Low German
in Siberia – A Century of German Towns)
from the NDR TV series Die Welt op Platt
(The World in Low German). The show
was followed by a lively discussion of the
similarities and differences between the
Low German versions spoken in Siberia,
Pomerania and northern Germany.
Dr. Jürgen Meier-Beer, in charge of the NDR
program Die Welt op Platt, and NDR director
Elin Rosteck attended the event, also
in the interest of finding new protagonists
for the next episode of their
series which will focus
on Low Ger man
lifestyle in Wisconsin.
Do you feel Russia? Various events at
the German Emigration Center revolved
around this quote by German poet Rainer
Maria Rilke (1875-1926) in November 2007
– in addition to kazachok music and dancing
at the Speisesaal Restaurant, a podium
discussion with Jewish Russian émigrés
and a reading of Rilke letters by Angela
Winkler, there were special tours and films
focusing on the special aspects of German-
1880 and 1913, the time when hundreds of
thousands of Russians used Bremerhaven
as a gateway to the New World.
Based on the theme …neither the shark
the German Emigration Center organized
events about and for children in May 2008
das Motto der „Langen
im Deutschen Auswandererhaus.
Passend zur
Fußball-EM lud das
Museum dazu ein, die
beiden Gastgeberländer
der EURO 2008, Schweiz und Österreich,
durch typisches Essen, alpenländische
Musik, Fakten und Zahlen kennen
zu lernen. In den Gastgeberländern liegt
nicht nur ein sportlicher Traum: Die
Schweiz ist aktuell das beliebteste Auswandererziel
für Deutsche, Österreich rangiert
nach den USA auf dem dritten Platz.
Gleichzeitig zeigte das Museum durch drei
ungewöhnliche Dokumentarfilme neue Seiten
des Phänomens Fußball, u.a. durch „The
Street & the Ball“ des Grimme-Preisträgers
Ciro Cappellari, der Lebensgeschichten aus
der Welt des Straßenfußballs nachzeichnet.
Im Restaurant „Speisesaal“ spielten die
Tanngrindler-Musikanten, eine achtköpfige
alpenländische Kapelle. Das Team des
Restaurants bewirtete die Gäste darüber
hinaus stilecht in Dirndln und Lederhosen.
This Swiss nickname for the Germans
(Gummihälse means rubber necks), who they
claim always nod in the presence of their
superiors, was the motto for the Long Night
of Culture 2008 at the German Emigration
Center. Inasmuch as the European Football
Championships were taking place at that
time, the museum invited visitors to become
acquainted with the two countries hosting
the European Cup 2008 – Switzerland and
Austria. Featured were typical dishes, alpine
music, and facts and figures about both countries.
And both countries represent far more
than an athlete‘s dreams. Switzerland is the
favored emigration destination of Germans,
with Austria ranking third after the U.S.A.
Three unusual documentary
films shown at the museum
highlighted new aspects
of football, among them
Jürgen Rudloff in Bremerhaven gegründet. Dr.
Dieter Strohmeyer, der derzeitige 1. Vorsitzende
des Vereins, äußerte sich im Gespräch zu
den Zukunftsplänen des Freundeskreises.
Womit konnte der Freundeskreis das Deutsche
Auswandererhaus gleich bei seiner Eröffnung
2005 unterstützen?
DR. STROHMEYER: Von Anfang an haben
wir die Grundlagen für ein zukünftiges Auswandererhaus
legen wollen und richteten u.a.
eine Spezialbibliothek sowie eine Bildersammlung
ein, die dem Museum übergeben
worden ist.
Was planen Sie für die Jahre 2008/ 2009?
DR. STROHMEYER: Wir möchten unsere
Vortragsreihe, in der Fachleute und anerkannte
Wissenschaftler zu Wort kommen,
weiter ausbauen und darüber hinaus Exkursionen,
z.B. zu anderen Schauplätzen der
Auswanderung, anbieten.
Wie können sich Interessierte im „Freundeskreis
engagieren?
DR. STROHMEYER: Jeder ist uns herzlich
willkommen. Menschen, die dem Freundeskreis
Dr. Dieter Strohmeyer, First Chairman of the
society, talks about his work and future plans
in the interview below.
In what way did the Society of Friends provide
the German Emigration Center immediate support
when it opened in 2005?
DR. STROHMEYER: From the very beginning
it was our objective to create a foundation for
the future emigration museum which is why
we established a special library and collected
pictures both of which were later handed over
to the museum.
What plans does the society have for 2008/2009?
DR. STROHMEYER: We wish to expand our
series of lectures by experts and respected researchers,
and offer excursions, for example
to other places of emigration significance.
How can individuals become involved in the
Society of Friends of the German Emigration
Center?
DR. STROHMEYER: We welcome each and
every individual. People joining our society
strengthen our position and with it the position
of the German Emigration Center. A membership
offers a number of benefits, besides our
Board of Trustees urgently needs support and
we are looking for people with new ideas.
JANUAR BIS JUNI 2009 JANUARY TO JUNE 2009
Am 29. August 2005 brach der
Wirbelsturm „Katrina“ über New Orleans
herein. Über 1.100 Menschen starben,
250.000 der 500.000 Einwohner flohen aus
der Stadt und kehrten nie zurück. Seitdem
kämpft die Stadt um ihr Überleben.
Neben dem Jazz, der kreolischen Küche
und dem French Quarter sind auch die
„ s h o t g u n “ - H ä u s e r
Wahrzeichen von New
Orleans. Sie werden
so genannt, weil man
bei geöffneter Vorder-
und Hintertür gerade-
wegs durchschießen
kann. Hunderte dieser
Häuser wurden von
„Katrina“ von ihrem
Fundament gespült,
unter Schlamm begraben
oder überf lutet. Eines dieser
vom Sturm und der Flut gezeichneten
Häuser hat das Deutsche Auswandererhaus
von seinem Besitzer gekauft, der mit
seiner Familie aus New Orleans geflohen
ist. In Bremerhaven wird es die Lebensgeschichte
seiner Bewohner erzählen und
damit beispielhaft für Tausende von Flutkatastrophenflüchtlingen
weltweit stehen.
Neben dem im Original wieder aufgebauten
„shotgun“-Haus wird das Deutsche Auswandererhaus
in einer Sonderausstellung verschiedenste
Aspekte des Zusammenhanges
zwischen „Migration und Klima“ vorstellen.
Hurricane Katrina hit New
Orleans on August 29, 2005, killing over
1,100 people, and causing 250,000 of the
500,000 inhabitants to flee the city, never
to return. Since the devastation Katrina
wrought on New Orleans the city has been
struggling to survive.
Besides jazz music, creole cooking and the
French Quarter, the
shotgun house was a
characteristic mark
of New Orleans. The
term “shotgun house”
is said to have come
from saying that one
could fire a shotgun
through the front door
and the bullets would
fly through the house
and out the back
door if all the doors were open. Katrina
washed hundreds of these houses off
their foundations, flooded them or buried
them under silt and mud. The German
Emigration Center recently purchased one
of these damaged homes from its owner,
who fled New Orleans with his family. In
Bremerhaven, it will tell the story of its
occupants‘ lives, representing the thousands
of flood victims worldwide. Adjacent to the
reconstructed shotgun house, the German
Emigration Center will present a special
exhibition on the diverse aspects connecting
Migration and Climate.
Lebin Weckesser ist also,
Mutter“ ausgewandert. Mit 14 Jahren zog er
nach Buenos Aires, um dort das Handwerk
des Drehers zu erlernen. 1943 eröffnete sein
Bruder Jorge die erste Bandoneon-Werkstatt
in Buenos Aires; Lebin unterstützte ihn dort
für einige Jahre. Lebin Weckesser ist heute
81 Jahre alt und lebt in Córdoba. Die Werkstatt
seines bereits verstorbenen Bruders
wird heute von Jorges Tochter Ana María
und seiner Enkelin Julia geführt.
biography
EXKURS:
Das Bandoneon, Inbegriff des Argentinischen
Tango, ist eine deutsche Erfindung und wurde
vor allem im Erzgebirge produziert.
Werkstattgründungen in Buenos Aires waren
eine Folge des Zweiten Weltkrieges: Viele
Arbeitskräfte in Deutschland wurden zum
Kriegsdienst aus Werkstätten eingezogen
und in den Fabriken wurde verbreitet
Kriegsproduktion betrieben. Da kaum noch
Bandoneons nach Argentinien gelangten,
müssen die vorhandenen Instrumente nun
sorgfältig repariert oder restauriert werden.
In November 2007, Lebin
Weckesser returned with his family to
the place from where his mother Adelheid
Weckesser, seven months pregnant with
Lebin at the time, boarded the Sierra Córdoba
in 1926, bound for Argentina.
With the outbreak of the Russian Revolution
the parents realized there was virtually
no hope for a decent life in the country
they called home. The Volga German couple
was held as prisoners by supporters of the
revolution for several days. Once released,
they quickly packed up their eight children
and left the country, leaving everything behind.
In 1921, they set out on the long and
arduous journey through Belorussia and
Poland, arriving in Frankfurt an der Oder
several months later where they settled in
the town of Lübbinchen, setting up a small
farming operation between 1921 and 1926.
From here they set out for South America
where the family hoped to finally settle
and make a living in farming. At the time, two
of Adelheid Weckesser‘s brothers already
lived in the province La Pampa and had
organized the ship passage for their sister
and her family. Her youngest son, Lebin,
was born two months after their arrival in
Colonia Barón. As Lebin Weckesser likes
to say, “I emigrated while still in my mother‘s
womb.” At age 14, he moved to Buenos
Aires to train as a turner. In 1943, his brother
Jorge opened the first bandoneon workshop
in Buenos Aires where Lebin worked
for several years. Today, Lebin Weckesser
is 81 years old and lives in Córdoba.
The workshop his deceased brother Jorge
established is now run by his daughter
Ana María and his granddaughter Julia.
ITEM:
The bandoneon, the quintessence of the
Argentinian tango, is a German invention and
was originally produced in the Erz Mountains
of central Germany. The workshops established
in Buenos Aires were a direct result of
World War II. Many of the German craftsmen
were drafted into military service and many
of the factories were re-fitted for wartime
production. Bandoneons thus became scarce
in Argentina and those available required
careful repair, restoring and maintenance.
die Strecke, die Millionen Immigranten zuvor
genommen haben. Sie waren dabei voller Ängste,
the ferry from Manhattan out to the pier at
millions of immigrants experienced
Wissenschaftliche Forschung stellt
einen Kernpunkt der Museumsarbeit des Deutschen
Auswandererhauses dar. Gleich zwei
19. Jahrhundert stellt die Stadt Cincinnati ein ideales
Untersuchungsfeld dar. Noch heute erinnern
im damaligen deutschen Viertel „Over the Rhine“
zahlreiche Gebäude und Inschriften an das Erbe
aus jenen Tagen. In verschiedenen Archiven
sichtete Robert Fuchs Kirchenbücher, Zeitungen
und Literatur zu seinem Thema. Besonders die
Unterstützung, die er durch die deutsch-amerikanische
Gemeinschaft erhielt, erwies sich
dabei als hilfreich.
Academic research is a central feature of
museum work at the German Emigration Center.
Right now, in fact, two research assistants are
working on their doctorates. One of them, Robert
Fuchs, embarked on a research trip to Cincinnati,
Ohio from March to June 2008 where he collected
data for his dissertation on the marriage behavior
of German emigrants. Did binational marriages
take place? Did Protestants marry Catholics and
vice versa? Robert Fuchs was interested in researching
the answers to these and other questions.
As the center of German
immigration in the 19th
century, Cincinnati
is an ideal location
for research. Even today,
numerous buildings and
plaques take us back to
the one-time German
quarter Over the Rhine
and its legacy. Several
archives provided a variety
of sources: Robert Fuchs
researched parish registers,
newspapers and literature
of interest for his topic.
