Was war bei dem Effenaar-Projekt für Sie die architektonische Herausforderung?
// Jacob van Rijs Sie lag darin, für eine Gruppe von Leuten ein neues Gebäude zu entwerfen,
die am liebsten ihr altes behalten hätten. Die alte Fabrik war Teil ihrer Identität. Wir mussten
ein neues Gebäude mit der „alte Seele“ entwerfen, was nicht einfach war. Nach der
Eröffnung haben die Leute aber bestätigt, dass uns das auch gelungen ist. Die informelle
Atmosphäre konnte trotz der Erweiterungen in Größe und Nutzung erhalten werden. Bei
den Materialien waren „No-Nonsens“ und „vandalismussicher“ die Leitsätze, das passte
am besten zur ungeschliffenen und anti-modischen, alternativen Attitude des Clubs.
Was waren Ihre Erwartungen bezüglich Branding und Leitsystem von den Designern?
// Sandor Naus Ich war dazu sehr aufgeschlossen. Von meiner Seite gab es keine formalen
Vorstellungen, wie es aussehen sollte. Meine Rolle lag darin zu beurteilen, ob das Design
zum Konzept des Gebäudes passt. Mit seiner rohen, elementaren Erscheinung toleriert
es keine Standart-Lösungen von der Stange für das Leitsystem. Meine Erwartung an die
Grafik-Designer war daher ein starkes Konzept, das mit dem Gebäude mithalten konnte.
How would you define the architectural challenge of the Effenaar project?
// Jacob van Rijs The challenge lay in designing a new building for a group of people who
would have preferred to keep their old building. The old factory was part of their identity.
We had to design a new building with an “old soul.” Not easy.
After the opening, people reassured us and told us we had succeeded. We preserved the
informal atmosphere of the building despite the expansion of size and function.
The guiding ideas for our use of materials were “no-nonsense,” and “vandalism-proof.”
These ideas fit the unsophisticated, alternative and anti-fashionable attitude of the
club best.
What were expectations of the designers when it came to branding and the way finding system?
// Sandor Naus I was very open-minded. I had no formal ideas about what things should look
like. My role was to assess whether the design suited the concept of the building. The raw,
basic appearance of the building would not suffer any off-the-rack standard way finding
solutions. My expectations of the graphic designers went in the direction of a powerful
concept that could match the building.
Do you think logical structuring of a building makes a way finding system superfluous?
// Sandor Naus That is difficult in a building like the Effenaar building (a large public institution),
in which the visitor groups constantly change.
Can you give us a detailed description of how your cooperation with Rene Toneman / Fabrique worked?
// Sandor Naus It was Effenaar, not MVRDV that contacted Fabrique. Effenaar was in charge
