Wie seid Ihr zur Arbeit für die documenta 12 gekommen?
// VIER5 Die documenta hat sich bei uns gemeldet und uns in unserem Studio in Paris
besucht, das war im November 2006. Es gab im Jahr zuvor schon Kontakt wegen eines
anderen Projekts, das aber nicht realisiert wurde.
Ihr benutzt sehr freie Handschrift, bei den Pfeilen fehlt eine Hälfte der Spitze. Gab es Diskussionen über
die Lesbarkeit eines so expressiven Leitsystems? Wäre für Euch auch ein rein funktionales System mit
Schweizer Typografie als zurückhaltender Gegenpol zur Kunst denkbar?
// VIER5 Es gab keinen Anlass zu Diskussionen. Wir wurden eingeladen, ein Leitsystem für
die documenta 12 zu entwickeln, das innerhalb der Ausstellung eine autonome Funktion
erfüllt. Beim ersten Treffen haben wir angesprochen, dass wir unsere Arbeit als freie,
künstlerische Arbeit begreifen und jede Form ausführender Tätigkeit für unsere Arbeitsweise
ablehnen. Das Feld war geebnet, und wir konnten uns auf das konzen trieren, was
für uns wichtig war, das Entwickeln des Leitsystems für die documenta 12.
In Bezug auf die Lesbarkeit ist zu sagen, dass unsere Arbeit einfach lesbar ist. Wir haben
aber kein Interesse an einer „genormten“ Lesbarkeit. Uns interessiert mehr ein primärer
Punkt von Lesbarkeit und Erkennbarkeit – das Erkennen von lesbaren Informationen bzw.
die Beschäftigung damit. Es gibt sicherlich sinnvolle und sehr gute Ansätze mit Schweizer
Typografie, die inter essant sind. Den Punkt der Lesbarkeit, die immer automatisch vorausgesetzt
wird und allgemein gültig scheint, zweifeln wir jedoch an. Es gibt Kulturkreise, in
denen diese Form der Gestaltung ebenso frei wirkt wie unser Ansatz.
Die Sicht auf einen rein funktionalen Ansatz ist eine sehr subjektive Sache. Es wird da etwas
konstruiert, das seit ein paar Jahrzehnten in bestimmten Kreisen gut funktioniert hat
How did you get the documenta 12 project?
// VIER5 Documenta contacted us and visited us at our studio in Paris, in November 2006.
They had contacted us earlier about another project, but it wasn’t realized.
Your use very free handwriting, half of the arrow tips are missing. Were there any discussions about such an
expressive way finding system? Would a purely functional system with Swiss typography as a restrained
opposite pole to the arts be conceivable?
// VIER5 There was no reason for discussions. We were invited to develop a way finding
system for documenta 12 that would function autonomously within the exhibition. At our
first meeting we addressed the fact that we see our work as free artistic work and reject
any form of supervisory activity. That leveled the terrain and we were able to concentrate
on what was important to us, the development of a way finding system for documenta 12.
In terms of readability, it should be said that our work is easily readable. But we are not
interested in “standardized” readability. We are much more interested in a primary readability
and recognition point and the exploration of this point. Certainly there are sensible
and very good approaches with Swiss typography that are interesting. But we question a
point of readability that is automatically assumed and considered generally valid.
There are cultural circles in which this form of design seems just as free as our approach.
The assessment of a purely function approach is a very subjective thing. Something is
constructed that worked or works well in certain circles. But unfortunately, 50 years of
the same thinking doesn’t guarantee general validity. Hence one shouldn’t hide behind
that form of design. Surely there are designers that can solve the task with the functional
Swiss typography system excellently. But we approach our work differently.
