Waren auch andere, so wie Ihr, auf räumliche Gestaltung konzentriert?
// POLYFORM Wir waren das einzige Büro, das alleine auftrat, die meisten kooperierten mit
Architekten – was wir anfangs auch mal überlegt hatten. Jetzt sind wir ganz glücklich,
dass wir alleine arbeiten.
Wie stark war der Aspekt Identität in der Wettbewerbsausschreibung verankert? In Eurer Arbeit ist das
Corporate Design bzw. Corporate Identity ja sehr wichtig.
// POLYFORM Man erhoffte sich in der damaligen Aufgabenstellung mit diesem Identitätskonzept
sogar Inspirationen für die anderen Standorte der Staatlichen Museen. Es gab im
Wettbewerb sieben Aufgaben, die zu entwickeln wir vier Monate Zeit hatten. Im Wettbewerb
hieß es für uns, den Masterplan, der 1999 entwickelt wurde, bis 2013/2014 fertig zu
stellen, jetzt sind wir ungefähr im Jahr 2025.
Gefordert war u. a. ein exemplarischer Weg, an dem man zeigen sollte, wie das Konzept
funktioniert, sowie Maßnahmen mit Neuen Medien und die Baustellenkommunikation.
Unsere Idee war, die Gebäude in den Umbauphasen komplett einzuhüllen und groß draufzuschreiben,
was hier eigentlich passiert. Die Wirklichkeit sieht anders aus, weil die finanziellen
Mittel beschränkt sind. Wir haben nach dem Wettbewerb darauf reagiert, indem
wir mit den klassischen Baustellenkennzeichnungen arbeiten und diese neu gestalten.
Unser Konzept baut auf einer theoretischen Aufschlüsselung des Standortes, bestehend
aus Topos, Form und Inhalt, auf. Topos ist die Insel, der Ort in der Stadt; Form sind alle
Gebäude und der Inhalt die eigentlichen Sammlungsobjekte. Die Schichtung Insel-Gebäude-Sammlung
staffelt die Information in der Tiefe: viel Insel, wenn ich noch weit weg bin,
und ganz wenig Insel und Gebäude, wenn ich direkt davor bin.
Were there other offices like yours that concentrated on spatial design?
// POLYFORM We were the only office that entered the competition alone. Most of the others
cooperated with architects – we had considered doing the same. Now we are pretty happy
we work alone.
How strongly was the identity aspect emphasized in the competition guidelines? Corporate design and/or
corporate identity are very important in you work, aren’t they?
// POLYFORM Yes, the hope was that the task described at that time might even lead to inspiration
for the other state museum sites. Seven proposals had to be developed in three
months. The master plan developed for the competition in 1999 was to be completed by
2013/2014, now things should be completed by around 2025.
An exemplary approach was needed. It had to include an explanation of how the concept
worked and measures with new media and construction site communication. Our idea
was to wrap the whole building completely during the renovation phases and write what
was actually being done on the covering layer with large letters. The reality looks different
since financial resources are limited. We reacted to this after the competition by using
redesigned classical construction site designations.
Our concept builds on a theoretical key of the location based on the topography, shape
and content. The island is the topography, the location in the city, all the buildings are the
shapes and the collections are the content. The island-building-collection-layers define
the depth of information: island when you are still far away, and very little of the island
and building when I am standing right in front of it.
