Seit wann gibt es die U-Bahn in Budapest?
// Attila Auth Die Linie M1 aus dem Jahr 1896 mit Originalbeschriftung im Jugendstil ist
immer noch erhalten. Damit ist die Budapester U-Bahn die zweitälteste U-Bahn in Europa.
Sie sieht fantastisch aus, ähnlich wie die in Paris. Die von uns umgestaltete rote Linie
M2 wurde in den 1960er Jahren von Ingenieuren aus der Sowjetunion gebaut, die dritte,
blaue Linie dann Mitte der 1970er Jahre. Das gesamte U-Bahn-Netz ist jetzt ca. 30 km
lang, hat 42 Stationen und wird täglich von etwa 1½ Millionen Menschen genutzt.
Hat die Stadt ein Interesse, den öffentlichen Verkehr zu fördern?
// Attila Auth Budapest ist eine Stadt mit zwei Millionen Einwohnern und wächst weiter, mit
zunehmendem Verkehr. Leider wird viel geredet, sichtbare Investitionen mit Ausnahme
der U-Bahn gibt es aber kaum.
Wird die U-Bahn als unterstützendes Instrument der Stadtentwicklung weiter ausgebaut?
// Attila Auth Budapest besteht aus den Stadtteilen Buda und Pest. Die Metro hat in Buda
nur drei Haltestellen, insgesamt gibt es 42 Stationen. Mit der vierten Linie kommen fünf
neue Statio nen in Buda dazu, damit wird das ganze Stadtviertel aufgewertet.
Wie ist Dein Büro zum Auftrag für die Gestaltung des Leitsystems der U-Bahn gekommen?
// Attila Auth 2003 gab es einen Wettbewerb, zu dem zehn Teams eingeladen wurden. Als
Gewinner haben wir uns um die gesamte Beschriftung gekümmert und mit dem zweitplatzierten
Industriedesigner zusammengearbeitet. Gemeinsam mit ihm haben wir dann
Infosäulen, Notrufpanele, die Entwertersäule und Bänke entworfen.
How long has there been a subway in Budapest?
// Attila Auth The M1 line dates back to 1896 and the original Jugendstil lettering hasn’t
been changed to this day. That makes the Budapest subway the second oldest in Europe.
It looks fantastic, like Paris. Soviet engineers planned and built the red M2 line that we
redesigned in the 1960s. Then there is the third, blue line that was built in the mid 1970s.
The entire network is currently about 30 km long, it has 42 stations and is used by about
1½ million people every day.
Is the city interested in encouraging the use of public transport?
// Attila Auth Budapest is a city with a population of two milllion and rising with increasing
traffic. Unfortunately there is a lot of talk, but hardly any visible investments besides the
metro.
Is the subway being expanded as a support instrument for urban development?
// Attila Auth Budapest consists of the city parts Buda and Pest. There are only three subway
stops in Buda of a total of 42. That will change with the fourth line. Five new stations
will be added in Buda, that will upgrade the entire area.
How did your office get the contract for the design of the subway way finding system?
// Attila Auth There was a competition in 2003. Ten teams were invited to enter. We won and
were made responsible for all the signage. We cooperated with the second-place finishers
and together we designed information columns, the emergency call panels, the ticketcanceling
posts and the benches.
