Oft wird behauptet, dass auf keinen Fall eine eigene Identität in die Piktogrammsprache gebracht werden soll,
weil die Zeichen dann nicht mehr verstanden werden.
// Andreas Uebele Das ist völliger, barer Unsinn. Wir haben für den Flughafen Stuttgart ein
Orientierungssystem geplant, das noch nicht ausgeführt ist. Die International Aviation
Association hat sich irgendwann einmal darauf geeinigt, alle Schilder mit gelbem Grund
und schwarzer Schrift festzulegen. Das haben dann ganz viele Flughäfen befolgt, manche
sind wieder davon abgekommen. Auf Basis dessen wird behauptet, dass man sich überall
auf der Welt zurechtfindet. Das ist ein eigenartiges Denken. Dass alles gleich aussieht,
hilft überhaupt nichts. Es geht vielmehr darum, wie es gestaltet ist. Viel wichtiger ist die
Identität des Ortes und dessen Eigenheiten. Diese Parameter bestimmen das Moment
„Wie finde ich mich zurecht“ in weit höherem Maße.
Wo herrscht Eurer Meinung nach der größte Mangel in Bezug auf Orientierung im öffentlichen Raum?
// Andreas Uebele Tatsächlich im öffentlichen Raum selbst – in der Stadt. Städte haben oft
gar kein Gespür für die Funktion und Wirkung eines Orientierungssystems. Die Stadt
Stuttgart hat jetzt ein Orientierungssystem realisiert, das eigentlich eine Verschandelung
ist. Hier wird Müll produziert, der die Stadt beleidigt und belastet, das gilt für ganz viele
Städte. Ähnlich ist es in Krankenhäusern. Das professionelle Gestalten von Orientierungssystemen
ist eine ganz junge Disziplin. Bei Architektur kann man von 2000 Jahren Baugeschichte
reden, bei Orientierungssystemen kennt man eine so lange Erfahrung noch nicht.

// Andreas Uebele That is complete, utter nonsense. We planned an orientation system for
the Stuttgart Airport that has not been completed yet. The International Aviation Association
set down that all signs should be designed with a yellow background and black
writing. A large number of airports then followed that guideline; some have deviated from
this policy since then. It is claimed that you can find your way around all over the world on
this basis. That is strange thinking. It doesn’t help at all if things look all the same. It is
much more about how things are designed. The identity of a place and its peculiarities are
much more important. These parameters are much more important in defining the “how
can I find my way around” moment.
Where do you think the greatest shortcomings lie when it comes to orientation in public spaces?
// Andreas Uebele Actually, they lie in public spaces themselves, that is to say the city. Cities
have no sense of the function and effect of an orientation system. The City of Stuttgart
has now realized an orientation system that is actually a mutilation of the city. Trash is
produced that insults the city and puts a strain on it. That goes for very many cities. Similar
things happen in public hospitals, there is no perception or consciousness for these
things. The professional design of orientation systems is a very young discipline. You can
talk about 2000 years of construction architecture when it comes to architecture, that
type of timeframe and experience doesn’t apply to orientation systems.
