auf der Gewinnerseite waren, niemand sagte: „Wir brauchen so ein System nicht, weil wir
schon etwas haben, das gut genug ist.“
Waren immer noch alle davon überzeugt, als die Kosten bekannt wurden?
// Tim Fendley Ja, auf jeden Fall. Ein Fokus der Studie liegt auf dem finanziellen Aspekt, auf
der Menge von Geld, das dadurch verschwendet wurde, dass jeder seine eigenen Projekte
umgesetzt hat, die nicht zusammengepasst haben. Das heißt auch, dass es ein Budget
dafür gibt, etwas Übergreifendes zu tun. Der Ansatz der Studie war nicht nur deutlich zu
machen: „Wegeleitsysteme sind sinnvoll, und es ist sinnvoll ein einheitliches System zu
haben.“ Sie sollte auch eine Vorlage dafür liefern, was das System alles sein, alles leisten
könnte. Dieses Dokument wurde den zentralen Bezirken von London präsentiert, die im
Großen und Ganzen damit einverstanden waren. Dann brauchte es drei Jahre, bis alle ihr
Einverständnis gegeben hatten und TFL mit der Umsetzung beginnen konnte. Es dauert
einfach, mit jedem zu sprechen, und bis jeder zur Überzeugung kommt, dass es eine gute
Idee ist.
Orientieren Sie sich an bestimmten Vorbildern anderer Städte? Welche Aspekte haben Vorbildcharakter?
// Tim Fendley Es ist schwierig, für London zu arbeiten, da es kaum vergleichbare Städte
gibt. Vor allem, was die Orientierung in der Stadt angeht, ist London speziell. Die Stadt ist
fast wie eine Mischung aus Venedig und New York: In New York passiert so viel, und man
hat viele dezentralisierte Bereiche. In Venedig hat man ein anderes Problem: Man verirrt
sich sehr schnell in den vielen kleinen Gassen.
Was everybody still convinced when they saw the costs?
// Tim Fendley Well, absolutely. One focus of the study related to the money, to the amount
of money which has been wasted, with everyone doing their own projects which don’t fit
together. This means there is a budget to do something over all. But the approach with
this study was not about just to come up with something that said “way finding is good
and having one system is good” it was actually in here as a blueprint for what that system
could be. This document was presented to all the central London boroughs, who agreed in
principle. And then it took time, three years for this to be agreed really and for TFL to pick
it up. You know, it takes time to talk to everybody, and for everybody to agree “this is a
good idea.”
Do you follow specific examples in other cities? Which aspects are exemplary for you?
// Tim Fendley I think what’s very difficult about working in London is that there aren’t many
cities like London. Concerning the way finding in particular London is very special. It is
almost a mixture of Venice and New York. In New York there is so much going on and you
have all that distributed in parts of the city, in Venice you’ve got a massive problem of getting
lost down little alleys.
// Adrian Bell I think from the political perspective, there is always been the “let’s look at
the largest cities in Europe.” How do we measure up to Paris, Berlin and Barcelona? That
is important politically. The mayor wants to have a cultural identity for London as well as
economic success. It is also the point that tourism is the second most valuable we have,
and even more so by 2012. And people won’t come here just to go to the Tower of London
