Im nächsten Schritt müssen die Informationen so strukturiert werden, dass sie in Schichten
aufgebaut sind, das heißt, wenn ich zu einem Gebäude hinkomme, muss ich zuerst die
Bestätigung haben, dass ich hier richtig bin, und erst dann wird die Information – je nachdem,
wie weit ich eintrete – immer weiter vertieft. Es wird also nie die komplette Information
angeboten.
Welche Rolle spielt die Namensgebung in eurem System?
// Erwin K. Bauer Die Nomenklatur ist ein wesentlicher Faktor. Und da unser System in erster
Linie ein Patienten- und Besucherleitsystem ist, wollen wir vorrangig auch diese Nutzer
erreichen. Dazu gehören die einheitliche Logik und die Verständlichkeit der Begriffe. Das
schließt lange bürokratische Bezeichnungen genauso aus, wie für Laien unverständliche
medizinische Fachbegriffe oder kryptische Abkürzungen. Welche Begriffe zulässig sind,
haben wir über ein logisches Baukastensystem mit Wörtern geregelt.
// Wolfgang Lengauer Ein Wording zu finden, das für alle Kliniken in Niederösterreich alltagstauglich
sein könnte, das war eigentlich unsere primäre Aufgaben in St. Pölten. Man hat
sich auf ein Wort-Baukastensystem in sechs Kategorien geeinigt: Klinikumsname – Hausname
mit Buchstabe und Farbcode – Funktionseinheit – medizinische Disziplin – Raumbezeichnung
– Nummerierung.
Wie habt Ihr Architektur, visuelle Gestaltung und Orientierungssystem verknüpft?
// Erwin K. Bauer Das Spezielle an den Orientierungssystemen für die Landeskliniken ist,
dass die Architektur Plätze für die Information vorsieht – nicht nur für ein kleines Schildchen
– sondern für großflächige Information. Diese Wandscheiben sind nicht nur reine

in our terminology and the understanding thereof is part of this. This eliminates specific
medical terms and long bureaucratic designations a layman doesn’t understand as well
as cryptic abbreviations. We decided what terms work well using a logical building block
system. The catalogue expands with each new clinic and its respective orientation system.
We develop the catalogue further and adjust it to the different needs.
// Wolfgang Lengauer Finding the right wording that would work for the everyday operations
in all Lower Austrian clinics was actually our primary task in St. Pölten. We agreed on a
word block system with six categories: clinic name – building name with letter and color
code – functional unit – medical discipline – room designation – numbering.
How did you link the architecture, visual design and the orientation?
// Erwin K. Bauer What makes the orientation system for the state clinics special is that the
architecture includes places for the information – not just for a little sign – but for largesurface
information. These wall panels aren’t just pure information carriers, they also
define spaces. I know, if I head towards the outpatient center, I am going to walk past
a large yellow wall and move slowly into the yellow area. Yellow is the color for outpatient
centers in all of the state clinics. This leads to intuitive navigation via colored areas and
helps spruce up the rooms at the same time.
The lilac-colored, grey-blue or dirty green colored floor- or wall colors of the 1970s that
used to make patients even sicker disappeared. We replaced them with lively or calming
colors that create a different sense of awareness in a hospital. It isn’t a place of sickness
