Jetzt sprechen wir von der Hauptzielgruppe des Marketings – den Käufern. Die kommen
automatisch! Wichtiger sind uns Gestaltern aber auch andere Gruppen. Einerseits die Behinderten,
andererseits die Kinder und die älteren Menschen. Ich gehöre zu den Älteren
und kann es immer besser beurteilen, wie nützlich eine gut lesbare Schrift ist.
Gleichzeitig spielt die Repetition eine wichtige Rolle. Wie oft eine Information bis zum Zielort
wiederholt wird, ist entscheidend. Es ist ein Irrtum zu glauben, dass jemand, der im
Jahr nur zwei oder drei Mal fliegt, sich immer wieder an alles erinnert. Er muss wieder neu
schaun, am liebsten würde er fragen. Und darum haben wir uns immer bemüht, große,
gut lesbare Schrift und wenige Größenabstufungen zu verwenden, damit das Bild ruhig
bleibt. Leuchtschilder, wie wir sie am Flughafen Zürich verwendet haben, sind ästhetische
Objekte. Die Schrift an sich ist ästhetisch, und die Anwendung auf den Schildern, wie wir
das seit 35 Jahren durchziehen können, hat auch eine ästhetische Qualität. Man darf diese
Visuelle Qualität nicht unterschätzen.
Ihr Gestaltungsbüro hat speziell für den Flughafen Zürich jedes einzelne Piktogramm entwickelt und
gezeichnet. Da hätte man auch die Piktogramme von Otl Aicher nehmen können.
// Ruedi Ruegg Wir haben sogar mit Otl Aicher darüber gesprochen. Die Sportpiktogramme
für München 1972 waren gleichzeitig mit unserem Projektstart in Entwicklung.
Otl Aichers Piktogramme sind deutlich abstrakter als unsere. Wir hatten Situationen zu
illustrieren und Zeichen zu entwickeln, die die Leute eindeutig verstehen. Deshalb haben
wir uns entschieden, eine Stufe realistischer zu sein.

I belong to the elderly and I can judge the usefulness of readable writing increasingly well.
Repetition also plays an important role. The amount of times information is repeated until
you reach a destination is decisive.
It is a mistake to believe that someone who only flies two or three times a year will always
remember everything. He has to look again, and would prefer to ask. We have always tried
to use large, readable lettering and as few different sizes as possible to keep the image
calm. Illuminated signs like the ones we have in the Zurich airport are aesthetic objects.
The font itself is aesthetic and its use on the signs, which we have been able to do for 35
years also has an aesthetic quality. You can’t underestimate visuell quality.
Your design office developed and drew each individual pictogram especially for Zurich Airport. You could have
used Otl Aicher pictograms.
// Ruedi Ruegg We even spoke to Otl Aicher about it. The sports pictograms for the Olympics
in Munich 1972 were developed at pretty much the same time we started developing our
project. Otl Aicher’s pictograms are considerably more abstract than ours. We had to illustrate
situations and make symbols that people under stand clearly. That is why we decided
to be a shade more realistic.
The ability to read and communicate messages faster is increasing. Does signage have to react to this?
// Ruedi Ruegg The trend to information carriers such as LCD monitors is there, especially
because they are much more versatile and information can be rapidly changed and
displayed. But that is hardly necessary in classical way finding. Static information will
