FOREWORD »Frischzelle« is a well established and popular exhibition series at the Kunstmuseum
Stuttgart. Once a year, young artists are offered the opportunity to realize their first solo
exhibition in a museum. Situated at the heart of the museum’s permanent collection the exhibition
allows the selected artist to draw inspiration from historical persepctives while modelling a
show to fit the challenging architectural context of the exhibition space. Despite the diversity
of approaches seen in the different contemporary positions presented in the »Frischzelle«
series, each exhibition concept is integrated into the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart’s collection in its
own unique way. The goal of the »Frischzelle« series is to promote young artists and to raise
public awareness of new artistic impulses. This approach is based on the idea that a museum is
not only a place for storing and conserving art, but also for cultivating new ideas.
The exhibition series would not be possible without the support of the audit and consulting firm
KPMG. The company was quick to recognize the analogical processes in art and business, and
understood that representatives from both fields can meet as specialists who are simultaneously
developing innovative and modern perspectives. The interaction of continuity and change,
tra di tion and innovation – of great importance for both the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart and KPMG –
forms the core of this joint venture. We would especially like to thank Ulrich Ackermann, Regional
Chairman Region Southwest KPMG, for his trust and commitment.
