Die Bergakademie Freiberg bietet als die deutsche Ressourcenuniversität

LAGE IN SACHSEN
UND EUROPA
Im Herzen von Sachsen, im Osten der
Bundesrepublik Deutschland gelegen, ist
die Universitätsstadt Freiberg seit 800
Jahren ein Zentrum der Wissenschaft
und Industrie. Bis 1969 war die Stadt
vom Bergbau und der Hüttenindustrie
geprägt. Heute ist Freiberg und die TU
Bergakademie Teil der Wirtschafts- und
Wissenschaftsregion Sachsen – einer der
leistungsfähigsten europäischen Standorte
in den Bereichen: Mikroelektronik-,
Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien,
Nanotechnologie, neue Werkstoffe,
Photovoltaik und Biotechnologie.

DIE TU BERGAKADEMIE FREIBERG

HISTORIE
Julius Weisbach, vielfältige Verdienste besonders im
Markscheidewesen und im Bergmaschinenbau
1765 gegründet ist die TU Bergakademie
die älteste montanwissenschaftliche
Hochschule der Welt. Viele bedeutende
Persönlichkeiten forschten und lehrten an
der Bergakademie.
Seit 250 Jahren stehen Rohstoffe,
Werkstoffe und Energie im Mittelpunkt
des ganzheitlichen Ressourcenprofils in
Forschung und Lehre.
Von der Erkundung und Gewinnung
über die Aufbereitung, Veredelung,
Verar beitung bis zum Recycling werden
ökonomische, ökologische und soziale
Aspekte berücksichtigt.
Diesem einmaligen Forschungs- und
Lehrprofil verdankt die TU Bergakademie
ihre internationale Anziehungskraft.
Die Hochschule besitzt neben modernen
Forschungs-, Lehr- und Büroräumen ein
eigenes Lehr- und Forschungsbergwerk
und betreibt mit der terra mineralia
ein einzigartiges Museum mit über
3.500 Mineralen aus aller Welt.

An der TU Bergakademie promovieren
seit 1920 eine Vielzahl junger Wissenschaftler_innen
aus der ganzen Welt.
Für Doktorand_innen und junge
Forschende bietet die TU Bergakademie
hervorragende Arbeits- und Forschungsbedingungen.
Moderne Labore, eine
mehrfach ausgezeichnete Universitätsbibliothek
und umfangreiche wissenschaftliche
Sammlungen können um ­
fassend genutzt werden.
Stetig steigende Absolventenzahlen
zeigen das Potential und die Bedeutung

FORSCHUNGSPROFILE
Die Technische Universität Berg akademie
Freiberg ist die Ressourcenuniversität
in Deutschland, die aus ihrer Tradition
in Silberbergbau und Hüttenwesen ihr
Forschungsprofil konsequent an den
Anforder ungen der Zukunft ausrichtet.
Entlang der geschlossenen Wertschöpfungskette
der Rohstoffe und Werkstoffe
und der Energiewandlung werden
Rohstoffe erkundet und gewonnen, zu
Mate r ialien veredelt, zu Werkstoffen
verarbeitet und als Sekundärrohstoffe
recycelt.
Daraus leiten sich die Forschungsfelder
in den vier Profillinien Geo, Material,
Energie und Umwelt (GEOMATENUM)
ab, die in den fachübergreifenden
Kompetenzfeldern Mathematik, Informatik,
Naturwissenschaften, Ingenieurwissenschaften,
Werkstoffwissenschaft
und Wirtschaftswissenschaft bearbeitet
werden. Die Forschungsfelder Wissenschafts-
und Technikgeschichte ergänzen
das einzigartige Forschungsprofil.

GEOWISSENSCHAFTEN
Die Naturwissenschaften Geologie,
Mineralogie, Geophysik und Geoökologie
nehmen das gesamte System
Erde in den Fokus.
Ingenieurwissenschaften aus den
Bereichen Geotechnik, Bergbau, Maschinenbau
und Bohrtechnik erforschen, wie
Ressourcen sicher und verantwortungsvoll
zu nutzen sind.

MATERIALWISSENSCHAFTEN
Superleichte Werkstoffe für Fahrzeuge,
intelligente Stähle mit Gedächtnis oder
Materialien für Speicherchips – verarbeitete
Materialien sind die Grundlage für die
Produkte der Zukunft.

Prüfender Blick auf eine ebene kreuzförmige Probe, die in die biaxiale Prüfmaschine
zur Ermittlung der Lebensdauer von Werkstoffen eingespannt ist.
Die Forschungslinie der Werkstoffwissenschaft
und -technologie ist einzigartig. Sie
umfasst Metalle, keramische Werkstoffe,
Nanomaterialien und Verbundwerkstoffe.

ENERGIE
Einem wachsenden globalen Energiebedarf
stehen knappe Ressourcen und
Umweltbelastungen gegenüber. Neue
Formen der Energiegewinnung,
-speicherung, des -transports, der
-verteilung und -umwandlung werden
entwickelt.
Elektromobilität für die Zukunft:
Am Mitsubishi i-Miev wird die Lithium Batterie vermessen.
Die Forschungslinie Energie konzentriert
sich auf nachhaltige Energiekonzepte mit
einem Fokus auf dezentrale und regenerative
Technologien.

UMWELT
Bergbau aus dem Reagenzglas: Bakterien werden in der Umweltbiologie zur
Reinigung von sauren Bergbaugewässern eingesetzt.
Die Erhaltung und der Schutz des Planeten
gehören zu den drängendsten Aufgaben
der Gesellschaft. Es gilt die komplexen
Zusammenhänge und Probleme zwischen
Gesellschaft und Umwelt zu erkennen, zu
analysieren und zu lösen.
Im Zentrum der umweltbezogenen
Forschungen stehen das natürliche Geo-
Öko-System und seine Nutzung, der
Boden- und Trinkwasserschutz, sowie
die Prozesse der Grundstoffindustrie und
Energiewirtschaft.

Die vier Kernfelder – Geo, Material,
Energie und Umwelt – geben der Universität
ihr einmaliges und unverwechselbares
Profil: Von der Erkundung neuer
sowie heimischer Lagerstätten über
die Entwicklung alternativer Energietechniken
und Werkstoffe bis hin zum
Recycling. Durch intensive Kooperationen
mit regional, national und international
agierenden Unternehmen, Forschungseinrichtungen
und öffentlichen Einrichtungen
wird an Grundlagen und für die
Praxis geforscht. Bei den Drittmitteln pro
Professor gehört die Universität zu den

Wir bieten allen Nachwuchswissenschaftler_innen
der TU Bergakademie
Freiberg eine individuelle Laufbahnberatung
im Rahmen eines Coaching an,
die es ermöglicht,
• die individuelle berufliche Entwicklung
zu bestimmen,
• professionelle Rollenanforderungen
im Forschungsalltag zu reflektieren
und den nächsten Karriereschritt zu
planen.
Neben der Förderung von Wissenschaftskarrieren
unterstützt das Coaching
Doktorand_innen auch in beruflichen
Entscheidungsprozessen.

KARRIEREFÖRDERUNG FÜR JUNGE
WISSENSCHAFTLER_INNEN
Mit dem Programm Junge Frauen an
die Spitze erhalten Doktorandinnen und
Studentinnen mit Promotionsabsicht die
Chance, bis zu drei Jahre lang in einem
Erfolgsteam Kompetenzen (z.B. Strategische
Planung, Vernetzung, Kommunikation,
Analytik etc.) zu erwerben, die
heute neben sehr guter Forschung für
eine erfolgreiche universitäre Laufbahn
erforderlich sind. Sie erhalten dazu
methodische Trainings, Gruppencoachings,
organisieren eine Strategie-Studienfahrt
nach Brüssel, treffen regelmäßig
herausragende Frauen aus Wissenschaft
und Wirtschaft und können sich ihr
eigenes Netzwerk beginnen aufzubauen.
Im Rahmen des Projektes werden die
Doktorandinnen auf die frühzeitige Teilnahme
an internationalen Wettbewerben,
die Einwerbung von Stipendien, die Mitarbeit
an Veröffentlichungen, die aktive
Tagungsteilnahme, die Netzwerkarbeit
mit anderen Wissenschaftlern/-innen,
die Organisation und Ausrichtung von
Tagungen und Kolloquien sowie die
Betreuung einer studentischen Peergroup
vorbereitet.
Mit dem Peer Mentoring-Programm
unterstützen wir die Karriereförderung
junger Wissenschaftler_innen. Eigeninitiativ
und disziplinübergreifend schließen
sich Nachwuchswissenschaftler_innen
zu Peer Mentoring Gruppen zusammen,
um gemeinsam ein Netzwerk zu Personen
bzw. Institutionen aufzubauen und sich
durch geeignete Maßnahmen Qualifikationen
anzueignen, die für ihre individuelle
Karriereentwicklung entscheidend sind.

WEITERBILDUNG
Wir bieten jungen Wissenschaftler_innen ein breites Bildungsund
Qualifizierungsangebot. Das Programm orientiert sich an
den Anforderungen, die an die Ausübung verantwortungsvoller
Tätigkeiten in Forschung und Lehre sowie in Forschung und
Entwicklung außerhalb der Hochschule gestellt werden. Unsere
Kurse werden in deutscher und englischer Sprache angeboten.

HOCHSCHULDIDAKTIK
Mit unserem Weiterbildungsprogramm
Hochschullehre ermöglichen wir in
Kooperation mit dem Hochschuldidaktischen
Zentrum Leipzig den Erwerb eines
Hochschuldidaktik-Zertifikates.
Das Zertifikatsprogramm des HDS
bietet eine an nationalen und internationalen
Standards orientierte, umfassende
hochschuldidaktische Qualifizierung in
drei Modulen. Das Zertifikat ist berufsbegleitend
konzipiert und kann während
der Promotionsphase absolviert werden.
Das Programm richtet sich vorrangig
an Doktorand_innen mit Lehrverpflichtungen
oder mit dem Wunsch, eine
Lehrtätigkeit nach Ende der Promotion
aufzunehmen. Das Zertifikat kann als
Bescheinigung für eine Lehrbefähigung
an Hochschulen und für spätere
Berufungsverfahren genutzt werden.

WISSENSCHAFTLICHES
ARBEITEN UND PUBLIZIEREN
Unsere Kurse zum Wissenschaftlichen
Arbeiten und Publizieren umfassen Workshops
zum Wissenschaftlichen Schreiben,
Präsentieren und Veröffentlichen von
englischsprachigen Fachartikeln. Dazu
zählen auch Kurse zum Erstellen von
wissenschaftlichen Postern und Präsentationen.
Kurse zu speziellen Forschungs-,
Datenmanagement- und Visualisierungsmethoden
ergänzen das Angebot.

Der überwiegende Teil der Promovierenden
wird sich nach Abschluss der
Promotion in relativ kurzer Zeit in
Führungsfunktionen wiederfinden.

die Entwicklung der eigenen
Kommunikation, des Selbstmanagements,
der Führungskompetenzen und
geben Raum für die eigene persönliche

KOLLOQUIUM
Einmal jährlich organisieren die
Doktorand_innen der TU Bergakademie
Freiberg ein interdisziplinäres
Kolloquium, um gemeinsam fachübergreifend
ihre Forschungsvorhaben aus
unterschiedlichsten Blickwinkeln zu
beleuchten, Networking zu betreiben und
die wissenschaftliche Karriere zu planen.
Die fachübergreifende Struktur ermöglicht
den Teilnehmer_innen, ihr Thema einem
fachfremden Publikum näher zu bringen
und gleichzeitig Einblicke in die Arbeit
anderer Disziplinen zu bekommen.
Das Doktorand_innenkolloquium eröffnet
den Rahmen zum wissenschaftlichen
Austausch und bietet die Möglichkeit, das
eigene Dissertationsprojekt vorzustellen
und interdisziplinär zu diskutieren.

VERANTWORTUNG ÜBERNEHMEN
„ProRat“ Freiberg (Interessens vertretung der Promovierenden)
An der TU Bergakademie haben die
Doktorand_innen ihre eigene Interessenvertretung
ins Leben gerufen. Seit 2012
bildet der Promovierendenrat (ProRat) die
Vertretung der Promovierenden an der
TU Bergakademie Freiberg. Der ProRat
versteht sich als direkter Ansprechpartner
für individuelle Probleme und Fragen
aller Doktorand_innen und andererseits
als politischer Akteur, der Einfluss auf
richtungsweisende Entscheidungen der
Hochschul politik zu nehmen versucht.

TAKING RESPONSIBILITY
“ProRat” Freiberg (Representing the Interests of PhD Students)
In 2012, doctoral students at TU Bergakademie
Freiberg launched their own
body to represent their interests within
the University – the ProRat (Council of
Doctoral Students). The ProRat views
itself as the direct point of contact for the
individual problems and questions of all
doctoral students and, on the other hand,
as a political agent that seeks to influence
positively the decisions of policy-makers
within the University.

DOCTORAL STUDENTS
COLLOQUIUM
The doctoral students of TU Bergakademie
Freiberg organise an annual
interdisciplinary colloquium to examine
their research projects together across
disciplines and from different points of
view, as well as to network and to plan
their scientific careers.
The trans-disciplinary structure makes it
possible for participants to introduce their
work to an audience of laypersons, while
simultaneously obtaining insights into
other disciplines.
The Doctoral Student’s Colloquium opens
up a framework for scientific exchange
and offers the opportunity for students to
present their dissertation project and to
discuss it in an interdisciplinary manner.

KRÜGER COLLOQUIUM
Several times each year, the Centre of
Advanced Study and Research (GraFA)
organises the “Krüger Colloquium” – an
event in which young scientists, professors
and citizens of Freiberg discuss
current topics with renowned personalities
from the fields of science, society and
politics.
The choice of topic(s) for the Krüger
Colloquium is oriented not only towards
the profile streams of our University
– namely Geo, Materials, Energy and
Environment – but also towards topical
scientific and socio-political problems.

The Centre of Advanced Study and Research (GraFA) supports,

support the development of

AND PUBLICATION
Our courses on scientific work and publication
include workshops on the writing,
presentation and publication of scientific
papers in English. This also includes
courses on producing scientific posters
and presentations. Courses on specialised
research methods, data management
methods and visualisation methods
complete the range of courses offered.

UNIVERSITY TEACHING
With our University Teaching educational
programme (run in cooperation with the
HDS Saxon Centre for Teaching and Learning
in Higher Education, Leipzig), we
enable participants to acquire a Certificate
in University Didactics (i.e. teaching).
In three modules, the HDS certificate
programme offers a qualification oriented
towards national and international
standards. The certificate is designed to
be acquired on a part-time basis while
studying or working, making it ideal for
PhD students.
The programme is directed primarily at
doctoral students with teaching obligations
or with the intention of taking up a
teaching position after completing their
doctorate. The certificate can serve as
confirmation of a teaching qualification
at universities and can be used in future
appointment procedures.

FURTHER EDUCATION
We offer young scientists a broad spectrum of further trainings
and qualifications. The programme is oriented towards those
requirements necessary for performing functions with high
levels of responsibility in research & teaching, as well as in
research & development outside of the university environment.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT FOR YOUNG
SCIENTISTS
With the “Young Women at the Top”
programme, female doctoral candidates
and students with the intention of
pursuing a PhD are provided the opportunity
to become members of a
successful team for up to three years.
This allows female PhD students to
acquire skills in areas such as strategic
planning, networking, communication,
analytics, etc. which, alongside excellent
research, are required for a university
career today. They also receive methodical
training and group coaching; organise
a strategy excursion to Brussels; and
regularly meet outstanding women from
the fields of science and business to begin
building up their own network.
Within the framework of the project, the
female doctoral students are prepared for a
myriad of activities, including early participation
in international competitions, the
acquisition of scholarships, cooperation
on publications, active participation in
conferences, networking with other scientists,
the organisation and arrangement of
conferences and colloquiums as well as
the mentoring of student peer groups.
With the Peer Mentoring Programme,
we support the career development of
young scientists. Based on their own
initiative, these young scientists join
together across disciplines in peer mentoring
groups to form networks with other
persons and institutions, and to acquire
qualifications that could prove decisive for
their future career development.

makes it possible for PhD students

• to structure their studies such that
the requirements of their professional

Along with the advancement of scientific
careers, our coaching supports doctoral
students in career-related decision
processes.

The Centre of Advanced Study and
Re search (GraFA) does not offer its
own scholarship programme. However,
we inform and advise applicants on
their applications to the scholarship
programmes of both public and private
sponsors.
It is our goal to assist in raising financial
support for our doctoral and postdoctoral

We offer consultations to international
young scientists regarding their opportunities
for carrying out research and finding
work, as well as on their participation in
conferences and workshops at TU

The four core fields – Geo, Materials,
Energy and Environment – give the University

from the exploration of foreign and
domestic deposits through the development
of alternative energy technologies
and engineering materials and on to

ENVIRONMENT
Test-tube mining: In environmental microbiology, bacteria are used for the
purification of acidic mining-related water bodies.
The conservation and protection of our
planet are among the most urgent issues
facing society today. The complex interdependencies
and problems between
society and the environment must be
understood, analysed, and solved.
At the heart of environmental research,
we find fields such as the natural geoecological
system and its use, the protection
of ground- and potable water, as well as
the processes of the raw-materials and
energy-production industries.

Rapidly increasing global energy requirements
are juxtaposed by limited resources
and mounting environmental impacts.
New forms of energy production, storage,
transportation, distribution and transformation
are continually being developed.
Electro-mobility for the future:

The research stream “Energy” concentrates

Technical University Bergakademie
Freiberg is THE resource university in
Germany, and it draws upon its tradition
in silver mining and metallurgy to closely
align its research profile with the requirements
of the future.
Along the closed-loop chain of value
addition, raw materials deposits are
explored and extracted, refined to usable
materials, processed to become engineering
materials and, at the end of the cycle,

HISTORY
Julius Weisbach: myriad achievements in science, particularly
in mine surveying and the development of mining machines
Founded in 1765, TU Bergakademie
Freiberg is the oldest university of mining
and metallurgy in the world. Many
important figures carried out research
and taught at the Bergakademie.
For some 250 years, raw materials,
engineering materials and energy have
been at the centre of the Bergakademie’s
integrated resource profile in research
and teaching.
From exploration and extraction through
preparation, refining and processing
and on to recycling, the Bergakademie
accounts for the economic, ecological and
social factors involved.
TU Bergakademie Freiberg owes its
excellent reputation internationally to this

Along with modern research laboratories,
lecture halls and administration offices,
the university has its own mine for
