JAE-MIN HONG
KOREA INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Dr. Jae-Min Hong
Director General of KIST,
Jeonbuk Branch
The Institute of Advanced Composite Materials at the Korea Institute of
Science and Technology (KIST) was established to develop composite
materials that go beyond existing limits and become a renowned R&D
institute in composite industries. It is obvious that global networks with
advanced research institutes that have both fundamental experience
and facilities play an important role in achieving such goals. For this
reason, KIST and the Institute of Lightweight Engineering and Polymer
Technology signed a cooperation agreement in 2016.
On that basis, researchers from KIST and ILK visited each other’s sites
in pursuit of substantial collaborations: KIST and ILK hosted a joint
conference in South Korea; KIST researchers attended the 1st International
Colloquium on Tailored Carbon Fibers in Dresden in order to
discuss carbon fiber technologies with representative scientists from
all over the world. KIST also participated in the International Dresden
Lightweight Symposium. This symposium intended to reveal paths for
international cooperation, serving as a great opportunity for KIST to
introduce its ongoing research to South Korean and German attendees
from various institutes, universities and companies. In 2018, Prof.
Hubert Jäger was invited as Key Note Speaker to the annually organized
KIST Composite Conference International. Furthermore three ILK
scientists used a research stay of several weeks at KIST to investigate
3D-printed multi-material lightweight structures and to carry out investigations
on alternative stabilization methods for the production of nanomodified
carbon fibres.
In 2019, this constructive relationship will be strengthened by a student
exchange programme. In addition, our research collaborations will lead
to fruitful and meaningful results: We are currently preparing joint research
projects and scientific publications.
In 2019, this constructive relationship will become firmer and stronger
through a student-exchange program. In the last two years, it was only
German graduate students from ILK visiting KIST; fortunately, the current
plan is for Korean graduate students to visit and conduct research
with support from the European Erasmus+ mobility program. In addition,
our research collaborations will be summarized through fruitful
and meaningful results to prepare for publication in 2019.
We greatly appreciate this close partnership with the ILK and look forward
to our further cooperation. We wish the management board and
its team all the best for the 25th anniversary of the institute.
