aus der Logistikbranche Eurogate und
Hellmann Worldwide Logistics, hat Astrium
in den letzten fünf Jahren das komplette
System in umfangreichen transatlantischen
Testverkehren erprobt. Die
Entwicklungsarbeiten sind abgeschlossen
und das System befindet sich seit Januar
2010 im kommerziellen Betrieb.

Starting in 2014, the U.S. will require complete
scanning of all shipping containers
to the U.S., namely at the last port prior
to entering US territory. Scanning or performing
X-rays on the containers with the
purpose of detecting possible explosives
or weapons at an early stage, in order to
prevent terrorist attacks in the U.S. for example,
would have huge implications on
the national export industry and all affected
container terminals.
The scanning of containers not only leads
to significantly higher transportation
costs, but demands a fair amount of space
at the already crowded terminals. Added to
this is the moving of the containers within
the terminal itself.
SeCureSystem, a satellite-aided monitoring
system developed by Astrium in
Bremen, offers an alternative to high-cost
scanning methods for sea containers.
Real-time monitoring
With this system, containers are globally
monitored with appropriate sensors in
real-time around the clock. Sensor data
is transmitted without additional ground
equipment or complex server networks via
satellite radio links to a trust center, where
the data is evaluated, anomalies are detected
and forwarded to customers or to

the security authorities. In this way, unauthorized
access, or any other intrusion into
the container interior can be identified in
real time.
This information represents a substantial
improvement of existing procedures for the
identification of hazardous containers. If
unauthorized openings are detected, the
identified container can be selectively put
through an inspection by scanning equipment.
With the interaction of these two security
technologies, the proportion of containers
to be inspected can be reduced to
a minimum. This way a much higher level
of security can be realized at significantly
lower costs.
A security concept based on electronic certificates
is a first for this satellite-based
solution which helps distinguish between
authorized and unauthorized openings
of a container. This provides not only the
lowest possible rate of false alarms, but
comprehensive security for transport-related
data and document traffic is also guaranteed.
With this personalized security
concept, cost savings can also be achieved
through the automated creation and transmission
of all freight documents.
In addition to these value added services,
SeCureSystem particularly supports interactive
cross-process supply chain management
through the high authenticity
of data and through its global real-time
capability.
In the same way the value of the goods can
also be monitored by using appropriate
sensors.
Over the past five years Astrium has tested
the entire system in extensive trans-Atlantic
test traffic together with partner companies
in the logistics industry Eurogate and
Hellmann Worldwide Logistics. The development
work has been completed and the
system has been in commercial operation
since January 2010.
