Tour ist solch ein neuer Horizont für unseren Sport.
Diese einmalige Kooperation, die einige der weltbesten
Springturniere verbindet, sorgt dafür, dass der Sport

American show jumping, and then travels to Europe where it will
include some of the biggest venues in the sport.

It is our special pleasure to introduce this new Tour Guide produced for the 2006 season of the Global
Champions Tour (GCT). It contains elaborate information on the participating events and the 2006 Tour
Schedule.
Th e Global Champions Tour was created in 2005 on instigation of Jan Tops and comprises six of the most
prestigious outdoor events in the world. GCT is all about creating new and attractive opportunities for the
equestrian sport by working together.
In our opinion this extraordinary cooperation will result in a win-win situation for all. Th e equestrian sport
will have a chance to lift its image and gain competitive strength within the international fi eld of sports.
Th e riders will be off ered fi rst class facilities and a platform to show their unique talent to an ever growing
number of horse fans around the world and at the same time, gain substantial prize money. And last but not
least, international sponsors will be able to tune into an attractive sponsorship program that can really live
up to the ‘think global act local’ idea.
For a new series to step into the spotlights you need to be prepared and work with the best in the business.
Th erefore we are grateful to have signed contracts with some of the world’s most renowned companies in
the media and marketing business to help us deliver a top class product. CHUM Television International
will handle the international distribution of all TV rights, aiming to reach over 500 million viewers around

Es ist uns eine besondere Ehre, diesen neuen Tour-Guide zur Saison 2006 der Global Champions Tour (GCT)
vorzustellen. Er beinhaltet ausführliche Informationen zu den teilnehmenden Turnieren und den Ablauf der
Tour 2006.
Die Global Champions Tour wurde 2005 durch Jan Tops ins Leben gerufen. Sie umfasst sechs der angesehensten
Freilandturniere der Welt. Bei der GCT dreht sich alles um die Erschaff ung neuer, zugkräft iger Möglichkeiten
für den Reitsport durch Zusammenarbeit.
Unserer Meinung nach wird diese außergewöhnliche Kooperation zu einem Gewinn für alle führen. Der
Reitsport erhält eine Chance, sein Image aufzupolieren und gegenüber anderen internationalen Sportarten
aufzuholen. Die Reiter erhalten erstklassige Möglichkeiten und eine Bühne, auf der sie ihr einmaliges Talent

★ Global Champions Tour: how does it work?
GCT Concept
The Global Champions Tour links six of the world’s most prestigious outdoor show jumping events. Every
event will carry a minimum prize money of 330,000 euros and a 150,000 euros Grand Prix that will attract
the top jumping riders in the world. The total prize money of the GCT events will amount to 2,5 million
euros.
Each event keeps its own identity within the GCT concept but has to follow strict GCT guidelines to
guarantee the tour’s high standards.
The event organizers will benefit tremendously from this concept. Not only will they be able to attract
better riders but they will also be part of an internationally profiled marketing and media program that
will be appealing to global sponsors. First estimates of our media partners indicate an audience of over
500 million people around the world.
The riders will be offered first class facilities for themselves and their horses. First class hotels, stabling,
training facilities, arenas and even better prize money.
It is our goal to enhance the image of show jumping significantly by offering a simple, attractive and
competitive concept that is linked to a comprehensive ranking in which riders are listed, based on the
total prize money won in the Tour.

GCT Sport concept
Every GCT event schedules a 150,000 euros Grand Prix ridden in two phases. In the second phase the best
18 riders of the first phase will compete. The riders with a double clear after two phases will ride a jump-off.
This makes it easy to produce an attractive TV-program of approximately one hour. Entry for riders is open
according to FEI regulations.
The two best riders in the Grand Prix are automatically qualified for the 150,000 euro Grand Prix class of
the next stage of the Tour.
The Global Champions Tour will carry an extra 600,000 euros of prize money to be devided under the 8 best
riders overall as follows:
1. 250,000 / 2. 125,000 / 3. 75,000 / 4. 50,000 / 5. 40,000 / 6. 30,000 / 7. 20,000 / 8. 10,000

Jedes GCT-Turnier führt einen mit 150.000 Euro dotierten Großen Preis durch, der in zwei Phasen geritten wird.
In der zweiten Phase gehen die besten 18 Reiter aus der ersten Phase an den Start. Die Reiter mit Doppelnull
nach zwei Phasen reiten ein Stechen. Dadurch lässt sich einfach ein einstündiges Fernsehprogramm produzieren.
Die Ausschreibung ist off en für alle Reiter gemäß des FEI-Reglements.
Die zwei besten Reiter des Großen Preises sind automatisch vorqualifi ziert zum mit 150.000 Euro dotierten
Großen Preis der nächsten Station der Tour.

The 34th edition of the Winter Equestrian Festival
will live up to its traditions of off ering all that
is expected of a top international equestrian
event. Apart from the fi rst Global Champions Tour
competition and two more FEI approved series (WEF
Grand Prix Series & WEF Challenge Series), Palm
Beach also hosts the country’s only Nations Cup competition,
Th e CN Wellington Finale CSIO 5* United
States. Additionally, during the Winter Equestrian
Festival, three World Cup qualifi ers for the US East
Coast League will be staged.

Laura Kraut – There is a lot happening in Palm Beach
Laura Kraut – In Palm Beach gibt es viel zu tun
Since 1981 Laura Kraut has
competed at Wellington. In
2005 she had a run of luck
at the Winter Equestrian Festival:
she won no less than four Grand
Prix. Th e Olympic rider, who lives
in Wisconsin, regularly pitches
her tent in Florida for the winter.
Mainly because of the good weather, but also because
of the competitive opportunities aff orded by the equestrian
festival. “We can move our whole enterprise to
Wellington for months. We can train our Grand Prix
horses here as well as our young horses and pupils,“
says the 41-year-old. “When I am in Europe at a horse
show I can take only three to four horses, here I have
30 to 40 horses with me.“ Th at this is hard work, goes
without saying.
Th ere are competitions from six am in the morning
until six pm in the evening. Th ere is not much free
time, but Laura Kraut has some tips for the region’s
visitors: “Th e most beautiful beaches can be found
north of Palm Beach, near Jupiter. And for good food,
I can recommend one of my favorite restaurants in
Palm Beach, Bica on Worth Avenue.”

Seit 1981 reitet Laura Kraut bereits in Wellington.
In 2005 hatte sie anlässlich des Winter Equestrian
Festivals eine Glückssträhne: Gleich vier der Großen
Preise konnte sie für sich entscheiden. Die Olympionikin,
die ihren Wohnsitz in Wisconsin hat, schlägt
regelmäßig im Winter ihre Zelte in Florida auf. Hauptsächlich
wegen des Wetters, aber auch die professionellen
sportlichen Möglichkeiten sprechen sie an. „Über
viele Wochen können wir unseren ganzen Betrieb nach
Wellington verlegen. Wir können dort unsere Grand-
Prix-Pferde genauso trainieren wie unsere Jungen
Pferde und unsere Schüler“, erzählt die 41-Jährige.
„Während ich auf einem Turnier in Europa nur drei
bis vier Pferde mitnehmen kann, habe ich hier 30 bis
40 Pferde dabei.“
Dass dies harte Arbeit ist, versteht sich von selbst. Von
6.00 Uhr morgens bis 18.00 Uhr abends wird geritten.
Freie Zeit bleibt da wenig. Trotzdem hat Laura Kraut
für Besucher der Region einige Tipps: „Die schönsten
Strände befi nden sich nördlich von Palm Beach, etwa
bei Jupiter. Und was gutes Essen betrifft – eines meiner
Lieblingsrestaurants in Palm Beach ist das Bica in der
Worth Avenue.“

JustWorld International (JWI) is widely recognized
throughout the equestrian community
for the work it does on behalf of impoverished
children in the developing world. Th e rapid international
success JustWorld International enjoys has
largely resulted from the enthusiastic support shown
for the organization and its work by Mr. Eugene R.
Mische, founder of the Winter Equestrian Festival
(WEF) held annually in Wellington, Florida. In
2004, JustWorld International chose to launch its
equestrian initiative, Jump for a Just World, during
the WEF. Mr. Mische and the WEF have shown their
support for JWI in a variety of ways and whenever
possible by doing such things as holding special
classes and events for the benefi t of JWI, donating the
use of facilities and equipment for JWI fundraising
activities, and encouraging junior, amateur and
professional riders to support JWI.
In 2006 during the GCT in Wellington, the $50,000
Friday night class will be for the benefi t of JustWorld
International. A charity calcutta will be organized,
and all proceeds will be donated to JWI. In addition, a
week-long funding drive will be held, and pony kids,
junior, amateur and professional JustWorld ambassadors
will work together to raise funds to support a
specifi c JWI project site. On Sunday before the GCT
Grand Prix, all JWI rider ambassadors will be present
to discuss their involvement with JWI and for the
announcement of the total amount raised during the
week’s funding drive. At this time, JustWorld International
will be awarding the ambassador who donated
the most winnings in 2005 to the organization to
Natalie Johnson.

Cannes is one of the most famous cities in the
world. It has a strong attraction for its visitors,
who are fascinated by the city’s star status. Four
world famous palaces are situated on the Croisette.
Th ree casinos are open the whole year round, famous
restaurants and clubs abound and in the marina, the
largest private yachts in the Mediterranean can be
found.
At the show grounds amateur classes for riders from
all over the world are staged during the day time. Th e
international fi ve star competitions are held in the
evening between 8 pm and midnight. Aft er that it is
party time in Cannes.

One characteristic of the CSI Cannes is its
quality of infrastructure, which makes this
horse show a fantastic stage for support
services and other marketing alternatives. Th e VIP
area of this show is unique.
All his life organiser François Bourey applied himself
to staging top international horse shows like La
Baule, Dinard, Paris, Biarritz and Grenoble. On top
of that he played a signifi cant role in the organisation
of the 1991 European Championships in La Baule
and he created the well known Renault Jump Series
(1987-1993).

Steve Guerdat – wartet jedes Jahr voll Ungeduld auf den CSI Cannes
Most horse shows mean
only hard work for
the participating riders.
However, as the competition
classes of CSI Cannes take place in
the evening, there is plenty of time
for leisure. “In Cannes you can
lay on the beach and go shopping
during the day. It is a great city with many possibilities,“
says successful Swiss rider Steve Guerdat. “It
is the only top class show where we can combine sport
with pleasure,“ says the 23-year-old. Th e beach in front
of the hotel is much appreciated by the riders who also
can enjoy a visit to one of the many clubs aft er the
show. “It is always cosy and beautiful in Cannes. I wait
impatiently for this event every year.“
Steve Guerdat thinks CSI Cannes belongs among
the elite shows on the international calendar. “In
Cannes there is more than only very good sport.
Many top riders participate with their best horses.
Every day it is a tough battle to win something.“ And
it is obvious Steve Guerdat takes the sport very
seriously here: In 2005 he took fi rst prize in the
prestigious Grand Prix of Cannes with Tijl van het
Pallieterland.

nden, bleibt hier jedoch auch schon mal Zeit für ein
wenig Freizeitgenuss. „In Cannes kann man tagsüber
am Strand liegen oder einkaufen gehen. Es ist eine tolle
Stadt mit vielen Möglichkeiten“, erzählt Steve Guerdat.
„Es ist das einzige Topturnier, bei dem wir den Sport mit
dem Genuss von ein wenig Freizeit verbinden können“,
so der 23-Jährige. Da wird dann gerne mal der Strand
direkt vor dem Hotel genutzt oder am Abend einer der
zahlreichen Clubs besucht. „Es ist immer gemütlich und
schön in Cannes. Jedes Jahr warte ich voll Ungeduld auf
diesen Termin.“
Steve Guerdat zählt den CSI Cannes zu den
absoluten Größen im Turnierkalender: „In Cannes
gibt es immer sehr guten Sport. Viele Topreiter nehmen
mit ihren besten Pferden teil. Das ist jeden Tag ein
harter Kampf, wenn man was gewinnen will.“ Und dass
Steve Guerdat den Sport auch bei diesem Turnier sehr
ernst nimmt ist deutlich: In 2005 sicherte er sich auf Tijl
van het Pallieterland die Siegesprämie im angesehenen
Großen Preis von Cannes.

Th e Equestrian Federation of Monaco and the new Organising Committee have opted for a diff erent format
for the horse show in 2006. Jumping International de Monaco 2006 will not be an indoor show, but will be
staged outdoors on the quay of the famous harbour. At the same location where the Formula 1 cars locates
her paddock, a new and unique infrastructure will arise. Th e main arena will be surrounded by VIP tents and
various trade stands, where insiders, as well as tourists, will be most welcome.
Monacos Pferdesportverband und das neue Organisations-Komitee haben sich für ein anderes Konzept des
Turniers in 2006 entschieden. Jumping International de Monaco 2006 wird kein Hallenturnier sein, sondern
draußen am Kai des berühmten Hafens stattfi nden. Dort, wo auch die Formel 1 ihre Zelte aufschlägt, entsteht
eine Infrastruktur, die schon alleine wegen des Standortes einmalig sein wird. Der Turnierplatz wird eingerahmt

show jumping shows. To most,
however, he is better known as
the owner of several top class
international horses. As president
of the Ukrainian Equestrian Federation, Onyshchenko
has clear aims. “Th e main goal for the coming
three years, is to prepare the Ukrainian teams in three
equestrian disciplines for the 2008 Olympic Games,”
he says.
In Monaco, where he is a regular guest, Onyshchenko
was delighted to accept the roll of President of the
Honorary Committee. He thinks the show’s move
outdoors to the harbour is a good initiative and
being part of the Global Champions Tour gives the
show a special signifi cance. “Th e Global Champions
Tour promises to become one of the most distinguished
series in show jumping. Th rough these events
the sport will gain even more popularity,” declared
Onyshchenko.

im Sattel, startet inzwischen im Springsport auch
auf internationalen Turnieren. Den meisten ist der
Ukrainer jedoch als Besitzer vieler internationaler
Toppferde bekannt. Zudem ist er der Präsident des
ukrainischen Pferdesportverbandes, eine Funktion, in
der er deutliche Ziele hat. „Das strategische Hauptziel
für die nächsten drei Jahre, ist das ukrainische Team
in drei Reitsportdisziplinen für die Teilnahme an den
Olympischen Spielen 2008 in China vorzubereiten“,
erzählt Onyshchenko.

der Ukrainer die Rolle des Vorsitzenden des Ehrenpräsidiums.

Charles Garnier, the architect of the opera house in Paris, built the Casino in 1878. Th e ‘atrium’, paved in
marble, is surrounded by 28 Ionic columns in onyx. It leads into the auditorium of the opera, called the
‘Salle Garnier’, which is decorated in red and gold, with a profusion of bas-reliefs, frescoes and sculptures.
Here, for more than a century, outstanding international performances of opera, ballet and concerts have
been staged. Th e ‘gaming rooms’ comprise a succession of numerous rooms featuring stained glass windows,
admirable decorations and sculptures, allegorical paintings and bronze lamps.

zugunsten von JWI stattfi nden. Geplant ist eine Beach

Since the 1920s, Estoril has grown into one of
the most appreciated resorts, bordered by the
Atlantic Ocean in the South and West. Th e
many hours of sun, the variety of recreational possibilities
and its closeness to the capital Lisbon, make
the region very popular. Nearby you can fi nd the
‘Sintra’, a scenic area appointed World Heritage Site by
UNESCO.
Estoril has earned a good reputation time and time
again with international sport events. Many World
Championships, in golf, tennis, motor sport, sailing
and surfi ng, have been staged in the coastal city.
In October 2005 Estoril won the Valencia Summit, an
international award for organising large sport events
for the further development of cities.

The CSI Estoril is staged in the Hippodrome
‘Manuel Possolo’ which was built in 1936 in a
10 hectare park in the city centre. In 2004 the
facility was especially renovated for large equestrian
events. Th e conditions for riders and horses are
optimal. Th e ‘Estoril Grand Prix’ is announced with
€ 150,000. Six classes count for the world ranking.
Th e main initiator of the CSI Estoril is Duarte Guedes.
Th e 55-year-old businessman was President of the
Portuguese Equestrian Federation from 1998 to 2000.
He is also involved in equestrian sport in his private
life as one of his four children is the international
jumping rider Francisco Guedes.
In his younger days Duarte Guedes gained experience
in a very diff erent sport: motor sport. For Nissan he
successfully participated four times in the Paris-Dakar
Rally. Today he is the President of the Estoril Coast
Tourism Board and a passionate golfer.

river Tagus, is one of Europe’s oldest cities. In the
year 48 BC Lisbon was settled by the Romans.
In 714 it was occupied by the Arabs and in 1147
conquered by the fi rst Portuguese king Dom Alfonso
Henriques. In the 15th and 16th century Lisbon
was the gateway to the new world for numerous
expeditions, which resulted in a fl ourishing period in
the 16th century
Lisbon is full of monuments which refl ect its stirring
history. Worth seeing are the Monastry of Jerónimos,
the Belém Tower, the Monument to the Discoveries,
which commemorates the age of the great mariners,
the Praça do Comercio, São Jorge Castle and the
Baixa Pombalina. Th e Portuguese capital off ers also a
versatile and interesting cultural scene with theatres,
concerts and exhibitions. Th e Bairro Alto is known
for its nightlife.
In 1998 the EXPO, the World’s Oceans, was held
in Lisbon. Permanent attractions are the new
international fair (FIL), the Oceanarium, the Atlantic
Pavilion with its boulevard of restaurants and the
cable car which off ers a view of the EXPO grounds
along the Tagus.

The Irish rider Jessica Kürten
is one of the most successful
riders in the world. In 2005
she won the € 76,000 Grand
Prix of Estoril with the mare
Castle Forbes Maike. “Th e show
was great, and the conditions
for the riders were really good. We had three
competitions each day, but nevertheless everything ran
really smoothly,“ said Jessica. Th e top rider sees great
potential in the organisation of the fi ve star event in
the future. “CSI Estoril could be right at the top. In
2005 it already was one of the better events. In my
point of view, it can grow into one of Europe’s leading
shows.“
Th e Irish rider was enthusiastic about everything
around it too. “It was my fi rst visit to Portugal.
Th e Portuguese hospitality impressed me and we
really enjoyed the quality and variety of the food.
In the evenings we walked along the beach, it was
breathtaking.“

Forbes Maike gewann sie in 2005 beim CSI Estoril
den mit 76.000 Euro dotierten Großen Preis. „Das
Turnier war toll, und die Bedingungen für die Reiter
waren wirklich gut. Wir hatten jeden Tag drei
Prüfungen, aber trotzdem lief alles ganz ruhig“, so
Jessica Kürten. Für die Zukunft der Veranstaltung als
5-Sterne-Turnier sieht die Topamazone großes Potential.
„Das CSI Estoril kann ganz nach vorne kommen. Bereits
in 2005 gehörte es zu den besseren Events. In meinen
Augen kann es ein absolutes Topturnier werden!“
Auch vom Drumherum war die irische Reiterin begeistert.
„Für mich war dies das erste Mal in Portugal. Die
Gastfreundschaft der Portugiesen hat mich beeindruckt.
Und von den kulinarischen Möglichkeiten haben wir
wirklich genossen. Abends sind wir entlang der Küste
gelaufen – das war atemberaubend.“

International Concours Valkenswaard is the fi nal event of three weekends of show jumping on the grounds of
Stal Tops in Valkenswaard and the fi nal horseshow before the World Equestrian Games in Aachen. Currently
the event is ranked third on the world ranking list of best outdoor show jumping events. Th ere are classes for
amateurs, young horses and international riders and a prize fund of € 330,000. Th e VDL Groep Grand Prix alone
off ers 150,000 euros in prize money, which attracts the world’s best riders and plenty of media attention.

International Concours Valkenswaard off ers the
best possible conditions for top quality show
jumping. Six of the scheduled competitions count
for the World Jumping Rankings. In addition to the
VDL Groep Grand Prix, the CN WorldWide Speed
Derby is one of the highlights of the show. Th e facilities
for riders, horses, sponsors, spectators and grooms are
excellent.
Before the International Concours Valkenswaard, the
Horse Festival is staged over two weekends. During
this top event, professionals as well as amateurs can
compete, who, in this way, get the chance to gain
international experience. Lots of well known foreign
riders and royal family members, regularly take part
in the Horse Festival.

the show, a Gala Evening takes place.

Edwina Alexander started
at the International
Concours Valkenswaard for
the fi rst time in 2005. She
participated in the Horse
Festival, which is organised
before the fi ve star tournament,
several times, but she did not
have the right horse to compete on the fi nal weekend
at Stal Tops. Th at was until she acquired the ride
on Isovlas Pialotta. Th e 14-year-old Westphalian
mare by Pilot already proved her talents with other
riders. “Whatever Pialotta has proven with other
riders, I knew, that with her I would have the best
opportunity ever in my riding career,“ says Edwina
Alexander. Th e new combination paid off . Alexander
won the VDL Groep Grand Prix in 2005. “Th at was
my fi rst Grand Prix win. It was fantastic, but above all
I want to congratulate the horse. I could never have
done it without her,“ said the native Australian.
International Concours Valkenswaard is not only
of great value for Edwina Alexander because of her
win. “Th e show is special. Th e footing, the conditions,
the atmosphere, all are top. Th e complete show has
a very good layout, raves the 31-year-old. Regarding
the sport, Edwina Alexander is enthusiastic too: “In
Valkenswaard the best riders compete. Th is results
in a great competition which makes it interesting for
everybody!“

Concours Valkenswaard an den Start. Am

stattfi ndet, hatte sie bereits mehrmals teilgenommen,
aber für die Teilnahme am Topturnier auf der Anlage
von Stal Tops fehlte ihr bislang das richtige Pferd. Das
änderte sich, als sie Isovlas Pialotta in Beritt bekam. Die
14-jährige westfälische Stute von Pilot hatte ihr Talent
bereits unter anderen Reitern bewiesen. „Bei allem, was
Pialotta schon gezeigt hat, wusste ich, dass ich mit ihr
die größte Chance meiner Reitsport-Karriere erhielt“,
erzählt Edwina Alexander. Die neue Kombination
zahlte sich aus. Der Sieg im VDL Groep Grand Prix
2005 ging an Alexander. „Das war mein erster Grand-
Prix-Sieg. Es war phantastisch, aber ich möchte vor
allem auch dem Pferd gratulieren. Ohne sie hätte ich es
nicht geschafft “, so die Australierin.
International Concours Valkenswaard hat für Edwina
Alexander nicht nur durch ihren Grand-Prix-Sieg
einen hohen Stellenwert. „Das Turnier ist etwas Besonderes.
Der Boden, die Bedingungen, die Atmosphäre
– alles ist top. Bei dieser Veranstaltung stimmt wirklich
alles“, schwärmt die 31-Jährige. Und auch in Bezug auf
den Sport ist Edwina Alexander enthusiastisch: „In
Valkenswaard sind immer die besten Reiter am Start.
Dadurch entsteht ein großartiger Wettstreit. Das macht
es für alle spannend!“

Valkenswaard is originally known for its
falconry, cigar industry and the nature reserve
‘Th e Malpie’. Th e town dates back to the
year 704 and has grown ever since to become today’s
blooming municipality with a large diversity of shops
and a lively center with various cultural off erings. For
nature lovers there are many possibilities to discover
the natural beauty of the area - by foot, by bike or on
horse back. Th e immediate vicinity also boasts fi ve
superb golf courses, a sub tropical swimming pool,
parks and a lot more.
Th e vibrant night life centers around the market
square. Th ere are cafes, bars, discotheques and restaurants
of all sorts. Th ere is something to everyone’s liking.
In the summer live music and street performers
provide the typical Dutch ‘Gezelligheid’.
Valkenswaard is on the border triangle with Germany
and Belgium so both countries are easy to reach.

ist der Ort zu einer blühenden Gemeinde mit großem
Einkaufsangebot, lebendigem Kern und sehr vielseitigem
Kulturangebot herangewachsen. Für Naturliebhaber

Because of its location in the nature reserve, Leenderheide Restaurant Jagershorst was, aft er its rebuilding in
1953, a well known resting place for riders and hunters. Today the restaurant, under the culinary leadership of

Guests, who want to stay at the show grounds, can indulge themselves in a myriad of culinary delights at the
Place de Concours. Th ere you can fi nd the bistro Sea Biscuit and the à la carte restaurant L’Orage de Goûtes,
which literally means ‘taste storm’. Here, little snacks to lobsters are served in a contemporary setting. Th ere’s
also a champagne and oyster bar and live music on Saturday.
Auch Gäste, die auf dem Turniergelände bleiben möchten, können sich kulinarisch verwöhnen lassen. Auf dem
Place du Concours befi nden sich während der Veranstaltung das Bistro Sea Biscuit und das à la carte Restaurant
L’Orage de Goûtes, was frei übersetzt „Geschmackssturm“ bedeutet. In zeitgenössischem Ambiente wird hier vom

★ The Global Champions Tour is good for the Sport
Interview Jan Tops
Jan Tops is the man behind the Global Champions Tour. Th e 44-year-old has been involved in equestrian
sport for a quarter of a century. His biggest success as an international jumping rider was winning Olympic
gold with the Dutch team in Barcelona in 1992. He has long been a dealer of top horses and for 12 years has
been organising CSI Valkenswaard. He knows the sport inside and out.
When did you first have the idea to create a new series?
It was about a year ago. I wrote the concept in October 2004.
To what extent will the Global Champions Tour enrich the sport of show jumping?
It is important for our sport, that some of the better horse shows are combined with a higher amount of prize
money. At the moment, we are far behind tennis and golf by comparison. We have to correct that. We can
all profi t, riders, horse owners and even the horses. Th ey have to jump less and can earn more. It is good for
the whole sport.
Is the new series not conflicting with the World Cup shows?
No, we have selected horse shows, wich do not overlap the World Cup qualifi ers. Th e World Cup is a series
for the indoor season, the Global Champions Tour is only staged at outdoor horse shows.
And what about the Riders Tour?
Th e Riders Tour is 95 per cent a German Series. Th e Global Champions Tour is, as the name already implies,
an international concept. On top of that, we are only focussing on
top events. I think it is good that there is a Riders Tour. Even if there
would be an overlap in dates, there are always enough riders. Any
date clashes won’t hurt, on the contrary: it is good for the sport.
What makes the Global Champions Tour a good platform
for sponsors?
In my opinion the international aspect plays a big role.
Companies, who see themselves as global players, have
homes not in one country, but in many, and want to
present themselves as such. We will have a lot of
television attention with the Global Champions
Tour, not just nationally and across Europe,
but far beyond. Th at is very valuable
for sponsors.

What shape will this television attention have?
We have retained a large marketing company, one of the largest in the world. Th rough them we will have
millions of spectators around the world. On top of that they have very creative ideas. Th at is optimal for us.
Are there plans for broadening the Series?
Now we have six horse shows at which the Global Champions Tour will be held. You never know what will
happen, but we have no concrete plans to enlarge the series.
What advantage does the Global Champions Tour have for the organisors of the participating
shows?
Th e shows can act on attracting even better riders than before. Th at will have a positive result on sponsors,
television and on the show’s reputation.
An extra 600,000 euros will be shared out to the best riders of the overall standing. Which riders
have, in your opinion, a good chance to benefit from this?
I always say: the top 50 of the World Rankings are good. At one time Marcus Ehning is the number one and
Jos Lansink may only be on 40, because he competed less for a while. Nevertheless he has the same chances.
It is an open competition, that is what is so special about our sport. Of course, it is essential who will be
participating and with what horses.
Will Jan Tops participate too?
When I have the appropriate horses available, sure. But when I do not ride myself, we still have Edwina
Alexander to represent Stal Tops.

Jan Tops ist der Initiator der Global Champions Tour. Seit einem Viertel-Jahrhundert ist der 44-Jährige im
Reitsport unterwegs. Sein größter Erfolg als internationaler Springreiter war olympisches Gold mit dem
niederländischen Team 1992 in Barcelona. Er ist Händler von Toppferden und seit 12 Jahren Organisator des
CSI Valkenswaard. Er kennt sich im Pferdesport aus wie wenige andere.
Wann hatten Sie zum ersten Mal die Idee, eine neue Serie ins Leben rufen zu wollen?
Das war vor ungefähr einem Jahr. Ich habe das Konzept im Oktober 2004 aufgeschrieben.
Inwiefern ist die Global Champions Tour eine Bereicherung für den Pferdesport?
Es ist wichtig für unseren Sport, dass einige der besseren Turniere kombiniert werden mit einem höheren Preisgeld.
Derzeit liegen wir ein ganzes Stück hinter Tennis und Golf zurück. Das müssen wir anpassen. Da können

alle von profitieren – Reiter, Pferdebesitzer, und sogar die Pferde. Sie müssen weniger springen und können
mehr verdienen. Es ist für den ganzen Sport gut.
Kommt die neue Serie nicht ins Gedränge mit den Weltcup-Turnieren?
Nein, wir haben Turniere ausgewählt, die sich nicht mit den Weltcup-Qualifikationen überschneiden. Der Weltcup
ist eine Serie der Hallensaison, die Global Champions Tour wird nur auf Freiland-Turnieren ausgetragen.
Und wie sieht das mit der Riders Tour aus?
Die Riders Tour ist zu 95% eine deutsche Serie. Die Global Champions Tour ist, wie der Name schon sagt,
international konzipiert. Auch richten wir uns ausschließlich auf die Top-Events. Ich finde es gut, dass es
die Riders Tour gibt. Selbst, wenn es Überschneidungen im Datum geben sollte, gibt es immer genug Reiter.
Das beißt sich nicht, im Gegenteil: Es ist gut für den Sport.
Was macht die Global Champions Tour zu einer guten Plattform für Sponsoren?
Meiner Meinung nach spielt Internationalität hier eine große Rolle. Unternehmen, die sich als Global Player
sehen, haben ihren Sitz nicht in einem Land sondern überall und wollen sich entsprechend präsentieren. Wir
werden mit der Global Champions Tour viel Fernsehandacht bekommen, nicht nur national oder in Europa
sondern darüber hinaus. Das ist für Sponsoren sehr wertvoll.
Wie sieht diese Fernsehandacht aus?
Wir haben einen großen Vermarkter mit ins Boot genommen, einen der größten weltweit. Durch sie können
wir weltweit mehrere Millionen Zuschauer erreichen. Außerdem haben sie sehr kreative Ideen. Das ist für uns
optimal.
Ist an eine Ausbreitung der Serie gedacht?
Wir haben jetzt sechs Turniere, auf denen die Global Champions Tour ausgetragen wird. Man weiß nie, was
noch passiert, aber wir haben keine konkreten Pläne, um die Serie noch auszubreiten.
Welchen Vorteil hat die Global Champions Tour für die Veranstalter der Qualifikationsturniere?
Die teilnehmenden Turniere können davon ausgehen, dass sie noch bessere Reiter anziehen. Das wirkt sich
positiv auf Sponsoren, Fernsehen und die gesamte Ausstrahlung aus.
Unter den besten Reitern der Gesamtwertung wird ein Extra-Preisgeld von 600.000,- Euro ausgeschüttet.
Welche Reiter haben Ihrer Meinung nach besonders große Chancen, davon zu profitieren?
Ich sage immer: Die Top-50 der Weltrangliste ist gut. Im einen Moment ist Marcus Ehning auf dem ersten
Platz und Jos Lansink vielleicht nur auf Platz 40, weil er einige Zeit etwas weniger geritten ist. Trotzdem hat er
genauso große Chancen. Es ist ein offener Wettstreit – das ist das Schöne an unserem Sport. Natürlich kommt
es darauf an, wer mit welchen Pferden teilnimmt.
Wird Jan Tops auch teilnehmen?
Wenn ich die entsprechenden Pferde zur Verfügung habe sicherlich. Aber wenn ich selber nicht reite, haben wir
immer noch Edwina Alexander, die für Stal Tops an den Start geht.

WHERE BREEDING AND SPORTS COME TOGETHER
Zangersheide heeft zich een wereldnaam weten te verwerven op het gebied van de
paardenfokkerij en paardensport, niet in de laatste plaats door de wereldkampioenschappen
voor jonge paarden die nu al sinds zo’n twaalf jaar door Zangersheide worden georganiseerd. Deze
wereldkampioenschappen voor jonge paarden worden verreden van 21 t/m 24 september 2006. Het is het laatste
concours van een serie van drie, die plaats zullen vinden in drie op elkaar volgende weekeinden in september.
De serie begint met een nieuw kampioenschapsconcours voor jonge ruiters van 18 t/m 24 jaar, genaamd
European Open for Future Masters, dat gehouden wordt van 8 t/m 10 september 2006. Hiermee wil
Zangersheide nu naast de jonge paarden ook speciaal aandacht vragen voor de jonge ruiters. Gezien de
voorkeur die overal gegeven wordt aan de meer ervaren seniorruiters, krijgen deze jonge ruiters te weinig startkansen.
Het is ook daarom dat wij de beste 50% van deze jonge ruiters de kans willen bieden deel te nemen aan
het daarop volgende concours. Dat daarop volgende concours is de Global Champions Tour, een 4-sterrenconcours,
genaamd Open European Masters, dat wordt verreden in het weekeinde van 15 t/m 17 september
2006 als finale van de Global Champions Tour.

De huidige concoursaccommodatie op Zangersheide werd
in 2005 volledig nieuw aangelegd. De zandpistes zijn op
alle weersomstandigheden berekend, zodat de ruiters met
hun paarden steeds onder volstrekt verantwoorde
omstandigheden aan de concoursen op Zangersheide
kunnen deelnemen.
Het initiatief van de Global Champions Tour, genomen door Jan Tops , verdient onze waardering en respect
vanwege het wereldwijde belang voor de promotie van de paardenspringsport, en vanwege de aantrekkelijkheid
door meer startmogelijkheden voor de internationale topruiters.

Zangersheide has acquired world fame in the field of breeding and the horse sport, not least through the
World Championships for Young Horses which it has been organising for the past twelve years. This year’s World
Championships for Young Horses will take place from 21 up to and including 24 September. This is the last competition
of a series consisting of three competitions which will be held in three consecutive weekends in September.
The series will start with a new Championship for Young Riders age 18 to 24, called the European Open for Future
Masters, which will be held from 8 up to and including 10 September 2006. With this championship Zangersheide wants
to give special attention not only to young horses but also to young riders. In view of the preference prevailing all
around for more experienced riders, young riders do not get enough chances to start. That is why Zangersheide wants to
offer the best 50% of these young riders a chance to start in the following competition. This competition is part of he
Global Champions Tour, a 4 star event, and is called the Open European Masters, which will take place in the weekend of
15 up to and including 17 September 2006 and will be the Finals of the Global Champions Tour.
The present show accommodation of Zangersheide was totally renovated in 2005. The sand rings have all weather
capacity and therefore the riders and their horses can always start at Zangersheide’s shows under absolutely responsible
conditions.

The initiative for the Global Champions Tour, which was taken by Jan Tops, deserves our appreciation and respect
because of the world-wide importance for the promotion of the showjumping sport and, in addition, its attractiveness
because of more possibilities to start for the international top-level riders. Major companies and multinationals can
sponsor this tour and so express their sympathy for the equestrian sport while at the same time promoting their products
on a world-wide scale. The finals of the Global Champions Tour will be held at Zangersheide from 15 up to and including
17 September 2006. We will do our very best to give these finals proper substance, for the sponsors, for the riders and
officials and for our visitors.
Zangersheide ist auf dem Gebiet der Pferdezucht und des Pferdesports weltbekannt geworden, nicht zuletzt aufgrund
der Weltmeisterschaften für Junge Pferde, die inzwischen seit 12 Jahren auf Zangersheide organisiert werden. Diese
Weltmeisterschaften finden vom 21. bis 24. September 2006 statt. Es ist das letzte von drei Turnieren, die im September
an drei aufeinander folgenden Wochenenden durchgeführt werden.

der Global Champions Tour sein, ein 4-Sterne-Turnier, das wir Open European Masters nennen, und das vom 15. bis 17.
September 2006 stattfinden wird.
Das heutige Turniergelände von Zangersheide wurde in 2005 komplett neu angelegt. Die Sandplätze wurden an alle
Wetterverhältnisse angepasst, so dass die Reiter mit ihren Pferde jederzeit unter absolut verantwortbaren Umständen
an den Turnieren auf Zangersheide teilnehmen können.
Die Initiative für die Global Champions Tour, die von Jan Tops genommen wurde, verdient unsere Anerkennung und
unseren Respekt aufgrund der weltweiten Werbung für den Springsport und aufgrund der Attraktivität für die
internationalen Topreiter.
Große Firmen und multinationale Unternehmen können mit dem Sponsoring dieser Tour Ausdruck an ihre Sympathie

jeunes cavaliers. C’est pourquoi Zangersheide souhaite leur réserver 50% de la liste de départ d’un nouvel événement. Il
s’agit d’une étape du Global Champions Tour, un CSI****, qui se nommera l’Open European Masters, programmé pour
le week-end du 15 au 17 septembre.
Les installations du concours de Zangersheide ont été complètement rénovées en 2005. Les pistes en sable sont capables
de supporter toutes les intempéries et ainsi chevaux et cavaliers ont la possibilité de concourir dans les meilleures
