Autonomous driving and
its pitfalls
Driverless cars which travel safely in traffic are
certainly a spectacular development in today’s world. A
number of automobile manufacturers are currently testing
out the idea, and in the process they are, of course, relying
on computer-controlled technology. The aim is to make
relaxed driving possible, without you having to do the
driving yourself. But, despite the advances,
it is not yet possible for the vehicle to travel
in ordinary street traffic, because challenges
such as cyclists and other cars often present
unpredictable obstacles. According to media
reports, the constant interaction between
all road users needs to be analysed using
sensors as well as light signals and rapid
processing of all the current data, and acted upon in a
matter of seconds. Interpretation of behaviour and the fast
reaction of the car are yet another form of artificial intelligence
which will become a part of our everyday lives. The
technology, however, is as yet nowhere near fully developed,
and european and global manufacturers are involved
in a tough competitive struggle. Who takes most effective
advantage of the internet companies throughout the world
is also important here. Because the interaction between
mature automotive technology and software that is capable
of learning, which reads data and refers to it in order to
perform the appropriate action, is the most important factor
in autonomous driving. At the same time, the personal
safety of the vehicle and its passengers must be guaranteed
against hackers and accidents. European manufacturers
must strive to keep pace with this development, since
the international competition always seems to be one step
ahead of them. Because of their connections, they often
have more opportunity to drive their developments forward,
with the result that the european market is liable,
little by little, to be outdistanced. The result of the race of
the car manufacturers remains to be seen.

Selbstfahrende Autos, die sich sicher durch den
Verkehr bewegen, sind durchaus eine spektakuläre technische
Entwicklung in unserer heutigen Zeit. Diese Idee
testen zur Zeit die Automobilkonzerne, wobei sie natürlich
auf computergesteuerte Technik setzen. Diese soll
ein entspanntes Fahren ohne jegliches Zutun des Fahrers
ermöglichen. Doch trotz des Fortschritts
kann das Fahrzeug noch nicht im alltäglichen
Straßenverkehr bestehen, denn Herausforderungen
wie Radfahrer, Fußgänger
oder andere Autos sind oft unberechenbare
Hindernisse. Laut Medien soll das Zusammenspiel
aller Verkehrsteilnehmer ständig
mithilfe von Sensoren und einer schnellen
Datenverarbeitung analysiert und in Sekundenschnelle
umgesetzt werden. Das Interpretieren von Verhalten und
die schnelle Reaktion des Autos sind eine weitere Form
der künstlichen Intelligenz, die einen Platz in unserem Alltag
finden wird. Doch noch ist die Technik längst nicht ausgereift
und die europäischen und die globalen Konzerne
treten in einen harten Konkurrenzkampf. Dabei zählt, wer
sich die weltweiten Internetunternehmen am effektivsten
zu Nutze macht. Denn das Zusammenspiel von Automobiltechnik
und einer lernfähigen Software, die Daten ausliest
und weiterleitet, um die entsprechende Handlung auszuführen,
ist der wichtigste Faktor bei autonomem Fahren.
Dabei muss die persönliche Sicherheit der Fahrzeuge und
der Insassen gewährleistet sein, z.B. vor Hackern oder vor
Unfällen. Bei dieser Entwicklung müssen sich die nationalen
Automobilkonzerne bemühen, Schritt zu halten, denn
die internationale Konkurrenz scheint ihnen immer etwas
voraus zu sein. Durch ihren Einfluss und die Verbindungen
haben sie oft mehr Möglichkeiten, ihre Entwicklungen
voranzutreiben, sodass der europäische Markt nach und
nach abgehängt werden könnte. Wie das große Rennen
der Autohersteller ausgeht, wird man dann sehen.
