Vorwort:
Mit dem Band über den G20 Gipfel 2017 in Hamburg halten Sie unsere zweite Dokumentation über ein großes Gipfeltreffen
in Händen. Wie die verschiedenen Gipfel selbst findet auch die Dokumentation dazu neue Schwerpunkte. Während beim G7
Gipfel in Elmau die Vorbereitung mit den vielen Infrastrukturmaßnahmen dominierten, verlagerte sich dies bei G20 Hamburg
auf den Ablauf der Proteste. Es mussten schlichtweg keine Straßen gebaut oder Brücken erneuert werden. Dagegen war
von Anfang an klar, dass die zu erwartenden Proteste in Hamburg deutlich mehr Personen mobilisieren können und aus der
Geschichte und Struktur in Hamburg auch deutlich heftigere Proteste zu erwarten waren.
Nach dem „Heimspiel“ beim G7 Gipfel war es eine besondere Erfahrung die Ereignisse in einer Großstadt zu dokumentieren
und zu erleben. Bei vielen Gesprächen und an vielen Orten erlebten wir die Offenheit und Freundlichkeit einer Stadt, die auf
Jahrhunderte internationalen Handel zurückblickt. Sicherlich war dies einer der Gründe warum Hamburg als Tagungsort gewählt
wurde. Andererseits war uns auch bewusst, dass wir leicht in gefährliche Situationen kommen können, sei es ganz vorne
in der „Welcome to hell“-Demo oder später, durch Zufall mitten in einen der randalisierenden Mobs, bei denen man alleine und
mit Kamera nicht unbedingt gerne gesehen war. Dabei erlebten wir aber auch eine Kameradschaft unter den Journalisten, sich
gegenseitig helfend und vor Gefahren warnend. Wir blicken auf eine spannende Woche zurück, in der wir ohne Einschränkungen
frei berichten konnten und einen Schatz an Erfahrungen und Bildern mit nach Hause nehmen durften.
Wir hoffen, dass dies nicht die letzte Gelegenheit war, in unserem eigenen Stil ein Gipfeltreffen oder vergleichbares Ereignis
zu dokumentieren. Uns ist aber auch bewusst, dass dies ohne externe Unterstützung auf Dauer nicht möglich ist. Bestseller
können und sollen unsere Dokumentationen nicht sein, wenn aber in Zukunft jemand diesen Band aufschlägt, vielleicht ein
Polizist, ein Demonstrant oder ein Anwohner, soll er sagen können: „Ja, das war der G20 Gipfel in Hamburg“.
Preface:
With this coffee table book about the G20 summit in Hamburg in 2017 you are holding our second documentation about a
major summit in your hands. Just as the summits differ so do the focus points of this documentation and new ones have arisen.
Whilst the main focus during the G7 summit in the Elmau was on the infrastructural measures, the focus has changed to the
course of action of the ongoing protests in and around the G20 summit in Hamburg 2017. No street had to be build nor did a
bridge have to be repaired. On the other hand, it was clear from the beginning, that the expected protests in Hamburg would
stir more people into action, and that given the history and the structure of Hamburg, one could expect more extreme protests.
Given the „home game“ at the G7 summit it was a special experience for us to document and live through such an event in
a major city. During various interactions in many different places around the city, we could experience the friendliness and
openness of a city which can look back on a long tradition of international trade over the centuries. Surely this was one of
the reasons why one chose Hamburg as the city for this venue. Then again we were also conscious that we could easily get
into hazardous situations, be it right up front in the „Welcome to hell“ demonstration or later on through pure coincidence in
the middle of a riot mob where one isn‘t looked upon with benevolence if you are alone and have a camera. At the same time
we experienced a camaraderie amidst the other journalists, helping each other out and warning in case of jeopardy. We are
looking back on a fascinating week, in which we could report without any restrictions, and we could take back home a treasure
of pictures and experiences.
We are hopeful that this wasn‘t the last chance that we got to document a summit or a comparable event in our own style. At
the same time we are conscious that this venture won‘t be possible in perpetuity without external backing. Our documentations
can‘t and shan‘t be bestsellers, but if in the future someone flips this book open, be it a policeman, maybe a demonstrator or
a resident then they should be able to say: „Yes, that was the G20 summit in Hamburg“.
Nach einer langen Autofahrt mit unserem „G20 Auto“ erreichten wir am Samstag den 1.7. 2017 Hamburg. Ein
kleiner Stadtrundgang folgte mit ganz eigenen Eindrücken. Die blaue Tonne ließ uns hoffen, man lasse hier
gerne auch mal Fünfe gerade sein, „Fairplay“ wie das Schiff getauft wurde wünschten wir uns. Am Abend
gerieten wir dann auch gleich in einen Großeinsatz.
After a long journey with our „G20 car“ we arrived in Hamburg on Saturday 1st of July. A small walk around the
city left us with our own impressions. The blue bin left us hoping that in the city one would more often than not
accept five as an even number, and we wished for „Fairplay“ just like the ship was named. That same evening
we ended up in a large scale police operation.

Auf dem Rathausplatz und der Außenalster sammelten sich viele
Teilnehmer zu einem der ersten großen Proteste gegen den
G20 Gipfel. Die friedliche Demonstration wurden bestimmt vor
allem von Themen um den Umweltschutz und die Abrüstung.
Zu Wasser und auf dem Land gab es viele bunte Ideen, die
das Weltgeschehen kommentierten. Nach der Abschlusskundgebung
erfolgte ein Polizeieinsatz, im Rahmen des Konfliktes
um die Camps waren Zelte auf dem Platz aufgestellt worden.
Protestwelle am 02.07.2017
Many participants of one of the first big protests against the G20
summit started gathering on the town hall square and on the outer
Alster river. The peaceful demonstration had as main topics environment
protection and disarmament.
Both on the water and on land, one could see many colorful concepts
which annotated the world affairs. After the closing rally there
was a police operation. In line with the conflict about the camps
the participants had put up tents on the envisaged location.
Trotz starken Regens versammelten sich viele Menschen jeden Alters und Herkunft auf dem Rathausplatz um
an der Kundgebung teilzunehmen. Beim Basteln der Schilder und Plakate gaben sich die Leute größte Mühe.
Even though it was raining heavily many people of all ages and provenance gathered on the town hall square
to participate in diverse rallies. They all took great care in making the umpteen signs and placards in handicraft.

Bei der Bootsdemo als auch bei der Protestwelle gab
es den schwarzen Block nur in aufblasbarer Form, mit
der Beschriftung „nur ein schwarzer Block ist ein guter
Block“. Für die Demonstranten war es durch das windige
Wetter keine so leichte Aufgabe ihn im Zaum zu halten.
Gleichzeitig begann die Bootsdemo mit der Einfahrt in
die Binnenalster, nicht schwarz sondern bunt.
Sowohl der Demonstrationszug als auch die Bootsdemo
waren friedlich. Es nahmen Familien mit Kinderwägen,
Omas, Opas und sämtliche Nationalitäten teil. Die Stimmung
blieb absolut positiv und das Wetter wurde auch
besser, so dass die geschätzt 8000 Teilnehmer ihre Runde
durch die Stadt trocken fortsetzen konnten.
At the demonstration on the boat as well as during the ripple
of protests there was a black block but it was only in the form
of an inflatable gadget, written upon it one could read „ only
a black block is a good block“. Due to the very windy weather
it wasn‘t easy for the demonstrators to keep it at bay. Simultaneously
the demonstration per boat started on the inland
river Alster, but this wasn‘t in black but rather quite colorful.
The protest march as well as the demonstration on the
boat were exemplary. Be it families with strollers, grandmothers,
grandfathers and people from diverse nationalities
took part. The mood during the demonstrations was
always positive and peaceful and even the weather got
gradually better making it possible for the round about
8000 participants to stay dry.

Eine wichtige Aussage der Demonstranten war vor allem die
Botschaft weiter am Klimaziel festzuhalten und nicht das Pariser
Abkommen aufzuheben. Amerikas Präsident Trump, der
eben diese Ziele aufgeben will und nicht an der nachhaltigen
Nutzung der Ressourcen für Generationen interessiert ist, sondern
eher an kurzfristigen Gewinnen, ist zum Feindbild geworden.
Die Protestwelle schwappt an Land
A major statement of the demonstrators was the message that one
should keep the climate protection program going and to not make
void the climate treaty of Paris. The American president Donald
Trump has become an enemy image as he wants to give up all
the targets of the climate treaty, he is also not interested in the
sustainable use of the resources for generations to come, but
rather in short term winnings.
Die Protestwelle schwappte im Anschluss von der Binnenalster weiter in Richtung Stadt und kehrte schließlich
in einem großen Kreis zum Rathausplatz zurück. Alles blieb friedlich und ohne Zwischenfälle. Eine Demo, die
in den Medien, weil sie gut lief, ein viel zu geringes Echo erhielt. Zu den Veranstaltern gehörten unter anderem
der Nabu, Greenpeace, Oxfam und der WWF.
The protest march swashed subsequently from the inland river Alster in the direction of the city and then returned
in a large curvature back to the town hall square. Everything stayed peaceful and without any incidents. A
demonstration which got to less coverage in the media, because everything went according to plan and stayed
amicable. Among others it was Nabu, Greenpeace, Oxfam and WWF who were the organizers.

Für den 2. Juli war auch der Aufbau des Camp Entenwerder
geplant, allerdings blockierte die Polizei auf Grund eines ausstehenden
Urteils des Verwaltungsgerichts den Zutritt zum
Gelände. Einige Zelte wurden zu einer Spontandemo davor
aufgebaut. Schon hier zeigte sich die harte Linie der Polizei,
welche bereits vor dem Gipfel zu Eskalationen bereit war.
Spontandemo Entenwerder

The buildup of the camp Entenwerder was planned for the 2nd
of July, but the police refused access to the grounds as one
had to wait for a verdict from the administrative court. Some
tents were arranged in front of the grounds as a spontaneous
demonstration. Here one could already see the hard line of the
police, which was ready for escalation even at this early stage
and it was before the summit even began.
Im Laufe des Abends wurde der Zugang zur Campfläche freigegeben, allerdings nur als Versammlungsort und
nicht als Übernachtungsplatz. Trotzdem aufgebaute Küchen und Schlafzelte wurden in der Nacht geräumt, es
gab Verletzte und Pfefferspray wurde eingesetzt.
In the course of the evening the entrance to the camp site was given the right to use, but only as a gathering
site and not as a place for an overnight stay. Any kitchens and tents which were buildup regardless of the
above mentioned right of use were dismantled in the night and there were injured persons and pepper spray
was used.

Der Montag vor dem Gipfel verläuft relativ ruhig, wir haben die
Möglichkeit einige G20 Baustellen wie den entstehenden Aufsagerplatz
und die Vorbereitungen an der Elbphilharmonie zu
besuchen. Ein Foto einer Überwachungskamera funktioniert
nicht, das Bild das entsteht ist gestört. Beabsichtigt oder Zufall
- an der Absicherung wird noch viel gebaut.
Die Wasserpolizei braucht nicht anzurücken, sie hat hier ihren
Heimathafen. Die Polizei bespricht an der „Elfi“ die Einsatzplanung
für den Gipfel. Vor der Elfi werden die Masten für die Fahnen
der G20-Staaten aufgestellt und die Pressebühnen für das
Familienfoto mit den Begleitern aufgebaut. Viele hundert Meter
Starkstromkabel warten noch auf die Verlegung.

The Monday of the week of the summit was relatively calm,
we had the chance to visit some of the G20 construction sites,
like the coming into being of the stage for the television reports
from which you can see the venue site in the background and
the prearrangements at the Elbphilharmony. A security camera
which should take pictures didn‘t work one just got a disordered
picture. Was it wanted or a coincidence - a lot of work still had
to be done on the safeguarding.
The water guard didn‘t have to make their way to the city as it
is their home port. The police are discussing their applications
planning for the summit at the „Elfi“. In front of the „Elfi“ they are
installing the flag poles for the flags of the G20 countries and
the platforms for the media where the family pictures with the
according companions could be taken were constructed. Many
hunderd meters of power cable were still waiting for their laying.

An der roten Flora, der wohl berühmtesten Hausbesetzung
Hamburgs und als „Linkes Kulturzentrum“ bekannt ist es noch
ruhig. Demonstranten bauen ihr Camp auf einer Wiese vor
einer Kirche auf. Gezielt wurden private und kirchliche
Flächen gewählt, was die Möglichkeiten der Polizei einzuschreiten
beschnitt. Gegen wilde Camps auf städtischen
Flächen wurde energisch vorgegangen.
Am Camp „Altona“ wird eine „Schlafkundgebung“ abgehalten.
Dabei soll auf die Notwendigkeit von Schlafplätzen in Form
von Camps der Demonstranten aufmerksam gemacht werden.
Auch hier steht noch ein Urteil vom Verwaltungsgericht aus.
Entsprechend passiert hier nichts und die Situation wird ausgesessen.
In manch anderem Bundesland wäre der Spruch am
Eingang undenkbar.
Yes We Camp

It is still quite at the „red flora“ which is probably one of the most
noted squatting house in Hamburg and it is also known as a
left-winger cultural center. Demonstrators are building-up their
camp on a meadow in front of the church. One purposefully
elected spaces which were either privately or church owned,
this restricted the potentiality of the intervention of the police.
The police proceeded vigorously against wild camps on municipal
ground.
In the camp „Altona“ they are holding a „sleep manifestation“.
They are doing this to call attention to the need for sleeping
berths for the demonstrators in the form of camps. They were
still waiting for a verdict from the administrative court. One can
therefore note that correspondently nothing is happening and
they are sitting it out.

Am Abend des 04.07.2017 wurde stadtweit zu einer
„Entspannungsdemo“, dem Hardcornern aufgerufen,
bei der sich die Anwohner entspannt feiernd die Straßen
zurückerobern sollen. Eine dieser Partys war aber
nicht um Punkt 22:00 Uhr beendet, aus dieser „Kleinigkeit“
entstand durch absolut fehlende Deeskalation ein
Großeinsatz.
Die Straßen wurden durch die Polizei mit Einsatz von
Wasserwerfern geräumt. Der Großteil der Schaulustigen
bekam ebenfalls eine Dusche ab oder wurde ins Schanzenviertel
gedrängt. Auch wir konnten uns an diesem
Abend die Dusche schenken. Viele empfanden dieses
Vorgehen, um eine Kreuzung in der Nacht freizuhalten,
als überzogen.
Hardcornern
On the evening of 04.07.2017 they invoked a demonstration
all over the city called „detent demonstration“ ,
the hard corner, in which the residents should recapture
the streets while celebrating unstressed. One of these
parties didn‘t end at exactly ten p.m. and from this „trifle“
arose a major police intervention due to missing
de-escalation tactics.
The streets were vacated by the police using water
cannons. The majority of the onlookers also got a free
shower or were urged into the „Schanzen district“. We
didn‘t have to use the shower facilities in the hotel that
night as we also got a free shower. Many people found
the action of the police as overdrawn, just to clear a road
junction for the night.

Eine Performance unter dem Titel “1.000 Gestalten”
bewegte sich auf den Burchardplatz zu. Die grauen
Gestalten, in der Bewegung an den frühen italienischen
Zombiefilm erinnernd, symbolisierten die Machtlosigkeit
gegenüber einer immer komplexeren Welt. Der Einzelne
wäre angesichts dieser Komplexität nur mehr zu ritualisierten
Aktionen fähig, mehr reagieren als agieren.
05.07.2017 1.000 Gestalten
A performance with the title „1000 figures“ was moving
towards the „Burchard square“. The grey figures, which
reminded oneself in their movements of early Italian zombi
movies, symbolised the powerlessness in view of a world
which is steadily becoming more complex. An individual
would in view of this complexity only be capable of ritualizing
actions, so more response rather than acting.
Mit großer Disziplin setzten die Darsteller ihre Rollen um. Die Mimik und Gestik dauerhaft aufrechtzuerhalten
stellte eine große Herausforderung dar - und wurde von allen Beteiligten über die ganze
Zeit durchgehalten.
The performers permuted their part with ample discipline. It was a great challange to keep up the
facial expression and gesture lastingly, and it was preserved by all the actors over the whole period.

Zu mehr Menschlichkeit und Eigenverantwortung sollte
die Kunstaktion aufrufen. Die in Lehm gehüllten Gestalten
repräsentierten dabei eine egoistische Gesellschaft
die den Glauben an Solidarität verloren hat. Man wolle
dabei nicht auf Entscheidungen der Mächtigen sondern
auf eine Änderung von unten setzen, die dazu führt, dass
sich Menschen wieder die Hand reichen.
Über 1.000 Freiwillige beteiligten sich an der Durchführung
und Vorbereitung der Aktion. Dabei setzte man auf
Mitwirkende aus allen Gesellschaftsschichten. Nach der
Einkleidung und dem Einlehmen machten sie sich in 25
Gruppen auf den Weg durch die Stadt, der sie schließlich
nach beinahe 2 Stunden zum Burchardplatz brachte, wo
sich alle trafen.
The art performance wanted to call upon more humanity
and personal responsibility. The figures which were
shrouded in clay are representing the egoistical society
which has lost its believe in solidarity. One doesn‘t want
to trust in a ruling of the mighty but would rather hope for
a change from the generality which would lead to people
reaching out to each other again.
Over 1000 volunteers participated in the preparation and
realization of this event. One worked with contributors
from all levels of society. After they were vested and
shrouded in clay the participants split up into 25 groups
and made their way through the city, which after an
about two hour long lasting walk brought them all to the
„Burchard square“ where they all met up.

Nachdem sich die grauen Gestalten zusammengerottet
haben, beginnt vom Zentrum her eine symbolische
Befreiung. Mit einem erlösenden Schrei nach Stunden
eintönigem Geklacker wird eine Kettenreaktion ausgelöst.
Der „graue Panzer“ wird abgeschüttelt und das
bunte, freie und auch nackte Leben mit dem Gefühl der
Gemeinsamkeit beginnt.
Freudenjubel erfüllte den Burchardplatz und die Emotionen schlugen auf die anwesenden Zuschauer über. Danach
verschwanden die Akteure innerhalb weniger Minuten und zurück blieb ein leerer Platz mit grauen staubigen Kleidern. Eine
emotionale Kunstaktion, die auch eine politische Botschaft transportierte und die Zuschauer begeisterte.
Jubilations of blitheness filled the „Burchard square“ and the emotions swept over and enveloped the bystanders. Soon
afterwards the protagonists vanished within just a few minutes and left an empty square with just grey and dusty clothing
laying on the ground. It was a very emotional art performance with a political statement which left all onlookers zealous.
Just after the grey figures had flocked together a chain
reaction began with a liberating scream as they had
just been clacking for the past few hours. The „gray
armature“ was shaken off and the colorful, free and
callow life including the feeling of commonality begins.

Lautstark aber auffallend unpolitisch bewegte sich ein
Rave unter dem Motto “lieber Tanz ich als G20” durch
Hamburg. Dem Demonstrationsaufruf folgten Zehntausende
und bewegten sich friedlich tanzend durch
die Hamburger Innenstadt.
Demonstration und Kunst ist etwas, was sehr eng
verflochten ist. Wie bei den 1.000 grauen Gestalten lässt
sich über Kunst eine Botschaft transportieren. Auch auf
der Tanzdemo waren wieder wahre Kunstwerke zu sehen,
allerdings ohne wirkliche politische Aussage. Am
späten Abend kam es noch zu einzelnen Scharmützeln,
die aber nicht die Demonstration prägten.
Lieber tanze ich als G20
Vociferous but rather apolitical a rave moved through
Hamburg, it had the theme „ I‘d rather dance than G20“.
Ten thousands followed this request and moved peacefully
through the city center of Hamburg dancing all the
way.
Art and demonstrations are two things which are strongly
interlaced. Just as with the 1000 grey figures one can
easily transport a message using art. One could also
behold many spectacular works of art during the
dance demonstration, but these didn‘t really have a
political statement. In the late evening there were a few
skirmishes, but they didn‘t influence the demonstration.

Ab dem frühen Morgen des 06.07.2017 erreichten die
Flugzeuge der Staatsoberhäupter mit ihren Delegationen
den Hamburger Flughafen. Eine der ersten Maschinen
war die des chinesischen Präsidenten.
Herzlich, sympathisch und als Highlight für die Presse
gestaltete sich die Ankunft der Familie des kanadischen
Premierministers. Die fröhliche lockere Art begeisterte
auch die Fotografen auf der Pressebühne.
Ankunft der Staatsoberhäupter
Eine kanadische Familie
In the early morning hours of the 06.07.2017 the airplanes
with diverse heads of state and their delegations onboard
started to arrive at the airport in Hamburg. One
of the first planes which landed was that of the Chinese
president.
The arrival of the family of the Canadian prime minister
was really a highlight for all, as it was heartily, congenial
and perfect for the media. The cheerful and casual
manner in which they arrived even elated the photographers
on the media stage.

Die Ankunft der Airforce One mit dem US-Präsidenten
ist ein besonderes Highlight an diesem Tag. Eindrucksvoll
ist, dass beide baugleichen Maschinen gemeinsam
ankommen und kurz nebeneinander stehen. Ein seltener
aber besonderer Anblick und ein perfektes Bildmotiv für
die Weltpresse.
Der US-Präsident Donald Trump und seine Gemahlin,
die First Lady Melania Trump, werden durch den
Hamburger Oberbürgermeister Olaf Scholz am roten
Teppich empfangen. Im Anschluss werden sie von einem
White Hawk in die Stadt geflogen. Das Rufzeichen des
Helicopters ist Marine One.
2 x Airforce One
The arrival of the Airforce One and onboard the president
of the United States of America was a particular highlight of
the day. What was most impressive, was that both airplanes
which are identically constructed arrived simultaneously and
for a short period of time they were standing side by side.
This is seldomly seen and therefore a special sight and a
perfect picture frame for the international press.
The president of the United States of America Donald
Trump and his wife the First Lady Melania Trump were
welcomed by the mayor of the city of Hamburg Olaf
Scholz on the red carpet. They were subsequently flown
to the city in a White Hawk. The call sign of this helicopter
is Marine One.
