Meet and Greet
At this year’s parents meet and greet, organised by Mr Leeflang and
Mrs Paul, parents from grades 5 and 8 gathered to get acquainted
with the school and other parents.
The Saturday afternoon kicked off with a brief information
session, followed by a Q & A session. Formalities out of the way, it
was time for the crowd to get their competitive spirit going. Parents
formed teams to participate in a quiz that would not only reveal
their vigour for competition but also a spirit for teambuilding.
In the background whilst the braais were being lit, the SV, new
learners and current DSP learners from grades 5 and 8 were
engaged in their own fun. The learners were occupied in treasure
hunts and team sports which they thoroughly appeared to enjoy.
After all the fun, parents and learners could indulge in a light
lunch and some dads even braved tackling the grill themselves. It
was a successful afternoon and certainly a good start to the year.
Mrs Paul
Saturday School
“Brrrrrrrrrrt!!!” Saturday mornings would usually find us clutching
our hands to our ears, as Frau Müller’s whistle called about 70
learners to the steps of the B-Block at the DSP for yet another
eagerly awaited session of Saturday school.
Saturday, 23 January 2016 was the first such a day of many – the
laughter, chatter and nervous anticipation could be felt in the air
as our new group of Saturday school learners stood at the ready,
excitedly awaiting instructions. These Grade 4 learners from our
partner schools in Eersterust and Mamelodi had successfully passed
the DSP Grade 3 testing in 2015 and were consequently admitted
to Saturday School 2016. Out of this group of learners the final
selection of 21 was done by our NSek team consisting of Frau Müller,
Mr Mashazi, Mr Sauti (who replaced Mr Markley halfway through the
year), Frau Koch and, heading the team, Herr Leeflang – these 21
learners have been selected for enrolment in Grade 5 at the DSP for
the year 2017.
Madiba once said that “Education is the most powerful weapon
which you can use to change the world”. At Saturday school we like
to believe that we are educating individuals who have an important
role to play in the future of this country. We take a holistic approach
to this endeavour as we allow the learners to develop not only
academically, but also socially - we allow the learners a glimpse into
a sometimes very different world to their own, exposing them to
new possibilities and perspectives, as well as a promise that if they
believe in themselves and work hard – they can achieve anything
they set their minds to.
My heartfelt appreciation goes to our competent team – it was
an honour and a pleasure to spend the occasional Saturday in your
presence – teaching, learning and being rewarded with the smiles
and gratitude emanating from our little learners faces. Saturday
school summarised in 10 words: laughter, smiles, learning, fun and –
of course – Frau Müller’s whistle!
