Geb. 1965 in Wien. Studierte Biochemie und Mathematik an<br />
der Universität Wien, Promotion sub auspiciis praesidentis.<br />
Er forschte von 1989-1998 an der Universität Oxford und von<br />
1998-2003 am Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.<br />
Seit 2003 ist er Professor für Mathematik und Biologie an<br />
der Harvard Universität. Nowak ist Autor von über 400<br />
wissenschaftlichen Publikationen und von vier Büchern.<br />
Er erweiterte Darwins Evolutionstheorie mit dem Grundprinzip<br />
der natürlichen Kooperation.<br />

Natürliche Kooperation<br />
Die klassischen Grundprizipien der Evolution sind<br />
Mutation und Selektion. Mutation führt zu Veränderung<br />
und zu Neuem. Selektion ist ein Wettkampf um<br />
Fortpflanzung und Überleben. Kooperation bedeutet,<br />
dass Individuen einander helfen. Kooperation wird<br />
neuerlich als das dritte Grundprinzip in der Evolution<br />
gesehen. Kooperation ist ein genialer Architekt der<br />
biologischen Komplexität. Menschliche Kooperation,<br />
obgleich schwierig, ist unerlässlich – und sie erzeugt ein<br />
Bewusstsein für Öffentlichkeit.<br />
Born in 1965 in Vienna. Studied biochemistry and<br />
mathematics at the University of Vienna, where he<br />
graduated sub auspiciis praesidentis. He worked at the<br />
University of Oxford from 1989 to 1998, and at the<br />
Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, from 1998 to<br />
2003. He has been Professor of Mathematics and Biology<br />
at Harvard University since 2003. Nowak is author of more<br />
than 400 scientific publications and of four books.<br />
He extended Darwin’s theory of evolution with the basic<br />
principle of natural cooperation.<br />

Natural Cooperation<br />
The two basic principles of evolution are mutation and<br />
selection. Mutation leads to change and novelty.<br />
Selection is competition for reproduction and survival.<br />
Cooperation means that individuals help each other.<br />
Recently, cooperation is considered as the third basic<br />
principle of evolution. Cooperation is an ingenious<br />
architect of biological complexity. Human cooperation,<br />
albeit difficult, is indispensable and creates an awareness<br />
of the public sphere.
