Agencies forecast green times on the horizon – although the current focus is still rather on
austerity than environmental or social credibility.
■ Upswing. “When the green trend kicked off two years ago, we
Germans were the pioneers, but now others have overtaken us,” says
Dr. Markus Preußner. In the USA, says the managing director of
Interplan AG, a “Concept of Sustainability” has long been standard
for tenders. However, he believes that sustainability is still a rather
“virulent topic” in this country. The PCO firm, which works mostly for
the (medical) association sector, has offices in four different
locations – including Leipzig since 2009. However, looking to the
future, Dr. Preußner is convinced: “If you cannot prove that you are
working ecologically and sustainably, you won’t even be allowed to
take part in international tenders before long.” That is why six
employees from various locations have got together to form a green
working group, and in Munich Interplan has a stake in the local
Ökoprofit group, which promotes measures on a corporate level.
The Proske Group in Rosenheim has its own “Green Events”
segment. Many customers ask for transport with low-emission – e.g.
hybrid – vehicles. Despite the crisis 2009 was a record year for the
Proske Group according to Janine David, Director Sales & Marketing.
Its staff more than doubled to around 50 employees. Of Proske’s
150 conferences and events a year only a handful take place in
Germany. Its most important customers are global leaders of the
health care and medical technology industries. Hospitality
programmes for large-scale events are the latest special segment
looked after by Dr. Andreja Wieser as Head of Sports since 2009.
“Even in difficult times companies focus their efforts on hospitality
measures,” she says but forecasts: “In 2010 sports events will see a
decline.”
In contrast, Mareen Rühmkorf expects 2010 to “definitely be a
better year than 2009“. The Managing Director of Berlin-based MR
Congress & Incentive GmbH with 18 employees works the German
home market with corporate clients both from Germany and abroad,
MCI: Enabling global change
CSR is all about saving costs, says Gerrit Jessen of MCI
Germany, but “the image effect will make corporate social
responsibility crucial in the short to medium term.” For
example, within the next few years the car industry will launch
so many green-powered products on the market that a
sustainable organisation and implementation of their events
will be an absolute must for their credibility, says the
Managing Director of MCI’s Corporate Division Germany.
“With our know-how within the MCI Group we can in places
enable this global change process both strategically and
logistically.” In 2011 MCI expects to realise the meeting of
one of Europe’s major umbrella organisations in the field of
renewable energies – of course, certified, probably according
to BS8901. www.mci-group.com
mainly from Spain, Italy and France. Its 200 events in 2009, especially in the
corporate segment, posed a true challenge for the company. Also in 2009 the
agency staged a marketing event and conference for 630 employees in Berlin on behalf
of a Spanish health care company. The social programme included a visit to the
luxury food department of the legendary Kaufhaus des Westens and a Trabant car
rally. However, according to the experience of MR Congress & Incentive, customers
increasingly want to do something for the environment. For example, an assignment
for the motor industry in 2011 requires low-carbon transport logistics for a group of
3,000. The solution will probably be to use
electric or hybrid-powered vehicles. FW
