European Green Capital – in 2011. The European
Commission picked the Hanseatic City from 35
candidates. From 16 to 18 November 2009 the City Climate
Conference with 290 attendees was already
hosted there. Since August 2009 Matthias Rieger has
been head of Hamburg Convention Bureau (HCB) with
its three staff members. As shareholders, Hamburg
Tourismus GmbH and Hamburg Messe und Congress
GmbH give their convention bureau operational
independence with twelve partners to co-finance the
project. “Things are really happening here!” comments
Matthias Rieger. “Among our business clusters we can
identify conventions that we want to get to Hamburg.”
Their first achievement: ECR Day for the consumer
goods business at the CCH with an expected 1,400
attendees in September 2010. “Ms. Mahmoud, we are
on the way – better watch out!” a confident Rieger
jokingly alerts his competitor.
This doesn’t make Berlin green with envy but only
the more aware of its own strengths. “In the last decade
Berlin has become a meetings metropolis of world-wide
acclaim,” observes Heike Mahmoud, director of Berlin
Convention Office (BCO). “International associations
can expect excellent value for money, Europe’s most
modern hotels, renowned convention centres like ICC
Berlin, and extraordinary venues.” 123 major conventions
- according to statistics of ICCA Germany - make
the capital the centre of the association meetings
universe. In Science Year 2010 Berlin will be celebrating
lots of anniversaries: 200 years of Charité and the
Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences, 200 years of
Humboldt University and 100 years of the Max Planck
Society. Magdeburg is looking forward to a summer of
science from 5 to 11 July 2010. In 2006 the capital of
Saxony-Anhalt already wanted to become City of
Science, but lost out to Dresden. To gain a greater voice
against the big cities, the Combined Conference
Centres Magdeburg.Halle.Dessau marketing organisation
has stepped up its activities: 23 businesses have
joined the alliance as regular partners. In 2010 a road
show in Leipzig and Essen is promoting the three cities,
which are a scientific heavyweight. Karolina Shlyapin,
head of Magdeburg Convention Bureau, quotes the jury
of the Stifterverband association for the German
science world: “For Magdeburg science takes centre
stage as a motor of structural change.”
„Raising awareness of the region on your front
doorstep,” is the sustainable motto of Kirsten Korte. The
head of the Convention Bureau of the Rhine-Neckar
Metropolitan Region founded in 2008 wants to position
and market members internationally for a long term,
but “for that we need a national presence and
recognition,” declares former corporate planner ��
