Das Team des German Convention Bureau erweitert Marketing-Horizonte.
The team of the German Convention Bureau broadens marketing horizons.
Pointing to the customer
The GCB beats the drum persistently for sustainable event management. GCB platforms
for relationship marketing and lead generation draw attention to customer needs.
■ Standard. “The players will soon not only be talking green but
also really acting green,” says Gerrit Jessen, Managing Director of
MCI Germany and an executive board member of the German
Convention Bureau. His optimism is based on an international ISO
standard for sustainable event management that was got under way
in late 2009. Jessen expects that, once effective, the standard will
lead to greater professionalisation. The German Convention Bureau
has deputy chairmanship of the national committee for ISO
certification. “We not just support the topic of sustainability but are
promoting it assiduously,” points out Lutz P. Vogt, Managing Director
of the German Convention Bureau (GCB). The ISO standard will be
based on the established British BS8901 standard and become
effective by 2012 at the latest – before the Summer Olympics in
London. Anke Pruust, deputy Managing Director of the GCB,
welcomes this development: “Then we won’t have to reinvent the
wheel, ISO certification will also be mirrored in the DIN committee.”
In view of a then existing international standard providers will have
to keep the promises they make as members of the UN Global
Compact, for example, says a convinced Gerrit Jessen. “All service
providers of the supply chain in our industry will then have an
orientation guideline for their actions and possible standardisation
efforts.“
The marketing organisation of the German meetings and
conventions industry represents the interests of its members, for
example, also as a key force of the Green Meetings working group of
the German meetings industry.
Also due to the recession, customers in Germany are still rather
cagey about this topic. “Customers are currently not prepared to
invest a lot more money in staging green meetings and events,” says
Lutz P. Vogt. That’s why the GCB gives its 257 members free advice
and tools. They are to help lower the bar for ecologically and
