„BMW gab mir ein Modell des Autos, und ich
dachte mir, es wäre vielleicht gut, das Auto so zu
zeigen, als ob man hineinsehen könnte.“ So
kommentierte David Hockney sein Art Car – einen
BMW 850CSi – am 20.4.1995. Viele Monate befasste
sich Hockney nicht nur mit der Oberfläche
des Autos. Er kehrte das Innere nach außen
und machte es somit „transparant“: Stilisierte
Ansaugstutzen des Motors erscheinen auf
der Motorhaube, der Fahrer ist durch die Tür zu
sehen – und natürlich auch ein Hund!

“BMW gave me a model of the car … and I thought,
probably it would be good to show the car so you could
be looking inside it.” That was how David Hockney
summed up his Art Car – a BMW 850CSi – on 20th April
1995. Hockney spent many months occupied not just
with the outer surface of the car. He turned it inside
out to make it “transparent”: stylised intake manifolds are
painted on the bonnet and the driver can be seen
through the door – together with a dog, naturally.
