Conclusion: Although the mechanism by which the extracorporal photopheresis
causes therapeutic benefit is still not proven, studies suggest that photopheresed cells
induce an antigen-specific immune response against pathogenic T-cell-populations
without affecting general immunocompetence. At our hospital, the positive results of
extracorporal photopheresis in pansclerotic morphea corresponded with the efficacy
of this treatment cited in literature. Because extracorporal photopheresis is a safe
treatment option for morphea with a low adverse effect profile, it should be further
investigated.
