Sand and shell particles generated during the shell removal and washing steps of mollusc
processing are used in the production of chemicals such as plastics and paints, construction
materials and fertilisers. Fluid lost from the fish, e.g. clam juice, may be used in foodstuffs.
Figure 3.6 shows the consumption and emission levels of the process steps in mollusc
processing.
