Measuring of end-expired breath ethanol concentration following percutaneous ethanol injections
(PEI) carried out on patients suffering from hepatocellular Carcinoma
diameter (arterial extension tube, length 15 centimetre, Angiokard ® ) resulted in significantly
increased values compared to the use of original tubes (length 100 centimetre).
Examination of original tubes from laboratory trials showed also that positive values
could be achieved when air uncontaminated by alcohol was pumped through the tubes
afterwards. On average 4 measurings were needed after an initial measuring of an alcoholic
gas-sample until the display was down to zero. Further measurings demonstrated that
measuring behind the airway filter yielded significantly lower concentrations (before:
0,77 ‰ ± 0,27 ‰; behind: 0,46 ‰ ± 0,14 ‰, n = 8).
The mean amount of instilled ethanol was 58,5 ml ± 31,3 ml in the Envitec group and
52,3ml ± 27,8 ml in the Dräger group. The maximum amount of alcohol concentration to
be found in the Envitec group was 1,72 ‰ (venous) and 1,88 ‰ (arterial), and in endexpired
breath 1,49 ‰. In the Dräger group a maximum of 1,51 ‰ (venous) and 1,66 ‰
(arterial), as well as 1,26 ‰ in end-expired breath was to be found.
In both groups BrAC values correlated significantly with venous and arterial BAC values,
whereby BrAC in total correlated better with arterial than with venous BAC. The
results for r reached from 0,90 (P < 0,001, 95 %-confidence intervall 0,84–0,94) for the
Alcomed 3011 (BrAC/venous BAC) until 0,95 (P < 0,001, 95 % confidence intervall
0,91–0,97) for the Alcotest 7410 med (BrAC/arterial BAC). Values for the standard error
were highest at 0,22 for the Alcomed 3011 (BrAC/arterial BAC), and lowest at 0,13 for the
Alcotest 7410 med (BrAC/arterial BAC). These results are shown in Table 1.
