In Neills Schulbeschreibungen der Gründungszeit findet man Neills Summerhill-Philosophie
und die typischen Charakterzüge Summerhills also bereits
voll ausgearbeitet vor, etwa Selbstregierung, Freiwilligkeit des Unterrichtes,
das anfängliche Fernbleiben vom Unterricht, aber auch seine typischen
überspitzten Formulierungen, daß es richtig sei, einen Zerstörungswunsch
auszuleben.
17.2.4. Vom Lehrer zum Kinderpsychologen
Der Besuch der Schulstunden war absolut freiwillig 331 . Zunächst versuchte
Neill (der Englisch noch nie als (Fremd-) Sprache gelehrt hatte und Deutsch

of others, our criticism of others, our hate of others is subjective. With this new knowledge

To the spectator who does not understand, our school is a school without ideals, without
an aim. I cry: Thank God! Better no aim at all than an aim imposed upon the children by
adults who do not understand the aim of live.
If one believes that the child is a potential genius, a potential Christ, only then can one
attempt to give the child freedom. I emphasize the fact that the child must lead me, not
that I should lead the child. The other night I offered to give a grammophone concert in
the Schulheim... Caruso, Wagner, Kreisler. After three records the girls demanded foxtrots,
and I gave them fox-trots. This is our education in a nutshell; the interest comes
from the child, and it must be followed. The child must ‚ausleben‘ his interest, wether it
be window-breaking or fox-trots or impudence. The people who have repressed their interests
on the advice of character-moulders, that is, moralists, are the neurotics, criminals,
suicides, war-makers of today.
What the result of our experiment will be I do not know. I hope that it will result in free
men and women who have initiative and courage. The old education brought us the great
civil war of 1914-1918, the hopeless peace, the Ruhr invasion. The new education, by
allowing the unconscious to become conscious, may save the world from the evils of today.

331 Die staatliche Schulpflicht gilt ohne Ausnahme! Sie wird erfüllt durch Anwesenheit in
der Schule, also auf dem Schul- oder Internatsgelände. Die Teilnahme an bestimmten
Lehrveranstaltungen ist gesetzlich nicht festgelegt, sondern - mehr oder weniger - in das
Ermessen von Pädagogen gestellt. Nach einer Eingewöhnungszeit besuchen praktisch
alle Kinder - mit verschwindenden, eher krankhaften Ausnahmen- nicht nur die Schule,
sondern auch den Unterricht. Freiwillig heißt nicht willkürlich. Wer kommt, soll regelmäßig
kommen oder wegbleiben und den Fortschritt der anderen nicht durch permanente
Wissenslücken behindern.
