as Director of the “National Art Gallery” of<br />

the Ministry of Culture of Kazakhstan. She<br />

is now serving as Head of the Contemporary<br />

Art Center Kulanshi in Astana. Kulanshi was<br />

founded in 2006 and conducts active and intense<br />

works in many areas in the field of art<br />

and its promotion. The focus of the center<br />

consists in the organization of exhibitions by<br />

local and foreign artists at least once every<br />

month. The International Curatorial Council<br />

of Kulanshi reviews potential projects of the<br />

center without any territorial restrictions.<br />

One of the major projects of Kulanshi is the<br />

International Arts Festival «ART FORUM KU-<br />

LANSHI» where national and international<br />

artists bring their work and skills to the capital<br />

of Kazakhstan. In addition, young Kazakh<br />

art fills Kulanshi’s 1000 square metres of exhibition<br />

space during the project “Here and<br />

Now” – the spirit of young contemporary art<br />

in Mahat’s home country.<br />

Leyla Mahat has received numerous<br />

awards for her artistic work including the<br />

state award of Kazakhstan and the Diploma<br />

of the Asia Pacific Association of Painting<br />

of Japan. She is the winner of Winner of the<br />

Medal of contribution to the art of the name<br />

of Franz Kafka of the Czech Republic and Laureate<br />

of the European Art Union and medallist<br />

of the “Asia Creation Art” of the Asia-Pacific<br />

Association of Ink Painting. Her works<br />

have been exhibited in Kazakhstan, Turkey,<br />

Germany, Belgium, Moldova, England, USA,<br />

Czech Republic, Netherlands, France, Italy,<br />

Russia, Japan, India, China, Austria, Hungary,<br />

Great Britain and Bangladesh. •<br />
