as Director of the “National Art Gallery” of
the Ministry of Culture of Kazakhstan. She
is now serving as Head of the Contemporary
Art Center Kulanshi in Astana. Kulanshi was
founded in 2006 and conducts active and intense
works in many areas in the field of art
and its promotion. The focus of the center
consists in the organization of exhibitions by
local and foreign artists at least once every
month. The International Curatorial Council
of Kulanshi reviews potential projects of the
center without any territorial restrictions.
One of the major projects of Kulanshi is the
International Arts Festival «ART FORUM KU-
LANSHI» where national and international
artists bring their work and skills to the capital
of Kazakhstan. In addition, young Kazakh
art fills Kulanshi’s 1000 square metres of exhibition
space during the project “Here and
Now” – the spirit of young contemporary art
in Mahat’s home country.
Leyla Mahat has received numerous
awards for her artistic work including the
state award of Kazakhstan and the Diploma
of the Asia Pacific Association of Painting
of Japan. She is the winner of Winner of the
Medal of contribution to the art of the name
of Franz Kafka of the Czech Republic and Laureate
of the European Art Union and medallist
of the “Asia Creation Art” of the Asia-Pacific
Association of Ink Painting. Her works
have been exhibited in Kazakhstan, Turkey,
Germany, Belgium, Moldova, England, USA,
Czech Republic, Netherlands, France, Italy,
Russia, Japan, India, China, Austria, Hungary,
Great Britain and Bangladesh. •

is married and has four
