THE “ROOTS” OF THE ST REGIS
The history of The St Regis Rome begins in London,
at a reception given by the well-known hotelier
Cesar Ritz in his celebrated hotel. Among
the guests was the Italian Premier, the Marquis of
Rudinì, who expressed his desire to have such a
modern hotel in Italy. A few years later, Rome, as
well as Zurich and Paris, were finally to encounter
the splendour of fin de siècle hôtellerie. The
“roots” of the St Regis Rome are steeped in history.
Under the building are the ruins of the Baths of
Diocletian erected in an area surrounding the hotel
extending from the Basilica of Santa Maria degli
Angeli to as far as the Cinquecento Square. Emperor
Diocletian finished the works and it was the
grandest and perfect example of a Spa building in
the ancient world. Today you can admire parts of
the Tepidarium wall inside the Di…Vino Wine Cellar
located in the hotel’s lower lobby level.

THE RULES OF CESAR RITZ
The personalized service is, to this day, synonymous
for the prestige and worldwide reputation
that the St Regis Rome has always been famous
for. The ancient rule, imposed a century ago by Cesar
Ritz and still valid: “see without looking, hear
