<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Christoph</strong> <strong>am</strong> <strong>Arlberg</strong>. Until today the community<br />
helps where it can and mostly supports<br />
large f<strong>am</strong>ilies that have unjustly ended up in<br />
dire straits.<br />

Fateful year 1977<br />
“The Brotherhood <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Christoph</strong> has existed fore more than 625<br />
years but only in 1977 did it reach the significance it has today.<br />
During the construction of the <strong>Arlberg</strong> tunnel, 18 workers lost<br />
their lives. 64 children were half-orphaned. With our donations<br />
we wanted to help”, is how the Brotherhood’s master Adi<br />
Werner recalls the sad occasion that motivated many helpers to<br />
become part of the brotherhood. Adi’s wife and the brotherhood’s<br />
treasurer, Gerda Werner, proudly continues: “Since 1977 we’ve<br />
managed to collect about 15 million Euros in donations and<br />
20,000 members.”<br />
Initiation ritual with accolade<br />
Christian brotherly love, lived as charity is the Brotherhood<br />
<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Christoph</strong>’s central value. The brotherhood is rich in traditions.<br />
Caring for and continuing these traditions and customs is<br />
an important part of the community. Particularly impressive is<br />
the initiation ritual which is usually performed by Adi Werner<br />
himself – new members are given the accolade with a 15.5 kg<br />
sword from the 14th century. Once the new brother or sister is<br />
officially admitted they are allowed to wear the crested pin with<br />
the three crosses that stand for faith – hope – love.<br />
