offers its services as a link between manufacturers,
designers, product managers and
suppliers. At present, over 450 companies
have come together on the ProductConcept
online portal. The network gives its members
the opportunity to contact each other and
forms the basis of further services the company
offers, which include the organization
of joint stands at specialist trade fairs such
as Interzum, Material Vision, Euromold
and Materialica. Forging contacts is not the
company’s sole purpose however. Product-
Concept is also on hand to advise all parties
involved and offers support for the development
of new products.

Werkstoffe auf dem Markt – doch wie genau
sie beschaffen und für welche Anwendungen
sie geeignet sind, darüber kann
kaum jemand den Überblick behalten.
Materialdatenbanken sind dafür nütz -
liche Informationsquellen. In München
etwa biete t das Color & Material Lab
von designaffairs eine Ausstellung zu
Materialie n und Farben für den Konsumgüter-,
Architektur- und Automobilbe -
reich, in Stuttgart das Raumprobe-Archiv.
In Köln gibt es eine Zweigstelle des internationalen
Material-Scouts Material
Connexio n, der neben einer Online- und
mehreren Vor-Ort-Bibliotheken auch
Recherch e- und Beratungsservices anbietet.
Über den Versandhandel Modulor sind
Werkstoffe auch in kleinen Mengen zur
Anschauung zu beziehen. Auch Stylepark

selbst Museen bieten Einblicke in die
Welt der Materialien – das Gewerbemuseum

and designers are constantly looking
for new materials that satisfy the demands
placed on their products. There are plenty
of innovative materials on the market, but
it is barely possible to maintain an overview
of their exact composition and the uses for
which they are suitable. To this end, materials
databases are useful sources of informa -
tion. In Munich, the designaffairs’ Color &
Material Lab features an exhibition on materials
and colors for the consumer goods,
architecture and automobile industries, in
Stuttgart there is the Raumprobe archive.
In Cologne, there is a branch of Material
ConneXion, the internationally active materials
scout, which offers research and consultation
services as well as an online library
and several local ones. We can also have
a look at current and classic materials in
small quantities via the mail order company
Modulor. And Stylepark Materials, formerly
Materialworks, presents numerous materials
with detail photos online and offers material
boxes, which can be ordered. In addition,
there are numerous international materials
databases such as MatWeb, the Materials
Research Society (MRS), or Innovathèque
in Paris. Larger companies, such as Bayer
and BASF, also often offer professionals
acces s to samples of materials they produce.
Even some museums offer insights into the
world of materials. Only recently the Gewerbe
museum Winterthur opened its extensive
collection of materials to the public.
