Herbst bei der Konferenz „creative industries – made by design“
All
– 18. Juni 2009 in Frankfurt
zu sehen sein. Es gibt viel zu entdecken!
Mr. Material speaks up!
Editorial
Materialien für Designer
The Magic of Materials
The creative minds of this world just love materials. Designers and
architects are constantly on the lookout for those new, extravagant
and special materials with which to turn their ideas and designs into
reality. But it would seem that for some now, it is no longer sufficient
to simply use a manufacturer’s material and convert it into a new
applicatio n. An increasing number of designers are developing their
own new materials and production processes – thus turning classical
knowledge of technology-driven innovation upside down. It is not
without reason that last autumn at the “creative industries – made
by design” conference at the Essen Zollverein the question was
whether a “creative pull” would now follow the “technological push.”
There is no shortage of examples. With her special coating
the designer Alexa Lixfeld has made concrete usable for fine tableware.
Oskar Zieta drew attention with an inflation process for furniture
made from sheet metal. With “Zip-shaping” designers developed
a bending technique for wooden panels which can be applied
without complicated forming tools. And the light-permeable concrete
of Hungarian architect Áron Losonczi is probably familiar to all by
now. These are all developments which were not expected to come
from the designer side. The Material Vision organizers firmly believe
there could well be other ideas around which will soon see the light
of day. The Designplus competition will once again be held on the
occasion of the trade fair. Awards will be presented to products
based on a particularly innovative use of materials or interesting
productio n processes. The award-winning contributions will be on
show during the trade fair from June 16 – 18, 2009 in Frankfurt.
There will be plenty to discover!
Welche innovativen Materialien stehen
heute für die Konstruktion erfolgreicher,
zukunftsfähiger Produkte und Gebäude
zur Verfügung? Antworten auf diese Frage
geben vom 16. bis 18. Juni 2009 gleich zwei
Events in Frankfurt am Main, auf denen
der Status quo im Bereich der Materialentwicklung
und -anwendung präsentiert
Corian super-surfaces
Aktivitä t und Passivität. Die Installation
soll die besonderen Materialeigenschaften
von Corian auf vielfältige Weise erlebbar
machen. Die Kombination von digitalen
Experience Corian – in Levete’s Lounge. In
time for the Milan Design Week at the end
of April, DuPont has opened the exhibition
“Corian super-surfaces” in the northern
Italia n city. Using Corian, the versatile material
produced by the traditional chemical
company, the London-based architect and
designer Amanda Levete has created a reinterpretation
of the lounge as the location
of a dynamic alternation between activity
and passivity. The installation is designed
to enable visitors to experience the special
properties of the material Corian in diverse
ways. The combination of digital design technologies
with innovative production techniques
and fascinating lighting effects also
clearly shows how the surfacing material
influences perception of space and form.
UPM-Papiere mit
EU-Umweltzeichen
Die Umweltbelastungen in der Papierproduktion
zu reduzieren, ist für den Forstindustriekonzern
UPM ein wichtiges Ziel.
Nachdem das Unternehmen durch Prozessoptimierungen
die negativen Umweltauswirkungen
im gesamten Produktionsprozess
verringern konnte, unterziehen sich
die UPM-Papierwerke derzeit dem sehr
strengen Zertifizierungsprozess für das
is an important goal for the forestry industry
company UPM. After the company successfully
reduced the negative environmental
effect s throughout the entire production
chain by optimizing processes, the UPM paper
plants are currently undergoing the very
strict certification process for the EU Ecolabel.
And successfully too, for at present almost
all UPM papers have been awarded the
Marktführer bei
Klavierlacken
Es gibt sicher Lacke, von denen weitaus
größere Volumen abgesetzt werden als
von Klavierlacken, doch in diesem kleinen,
aber feinen Bereich ist die BASF Coatings
Marktführer in Europa. Die hochglänzenden,
edlen und zumeist schwarzen Lacke
schützen die kostbaren Instrumente über
Generationen gegen Beschädigungen und
Feuchtigkeit. Basis des Klavierlacks sind
ungesättigte Polyesterharze, die bei 200
Grad Celsius aus Alkoholen und Säuren
kondensiert werden; anschließend werden
Farbpigmente und Additive hinzugefügt.
Der Klavierhersteller übernimmt dann das
Lackieren – bei einem Flügel kann das bis
zu 120 Stunden dauern.
BASF Coatings: Market leader in piano finishes.
It is certainly true that there are finishes
that are sold in far greater volumes than piano
finishes, but nonetheless, in this small,
but exclusive segment, BASF Coatings is
the European market leader. The high-gloss,
elegant and mostly black finishes protect the
valuable instruments against damage and
damp for generations. Unsaturated polyester
resins form the basis of the piano finish,
which are condensed from alcohols and
acid s at 200° Celsius. Color pigments and
additives are then added. The piano manufacturer
then applies the finish, which for
a grand piano can take up to 120 hours.
Die Intelligenz des Materials
Smart Materials
mechanisierte n, haptischen Welt gekommen. Trendforscher
prophezeien das seit Jahren. Doch schaut
Materia l Vision in Frankfurt (16. – 18.
weil intelligente Seite: Da reagieren Textilien
FGL-Materialien speichern Forminformationen in ihrem
Eindhove n realisiert.
Doch all das scheint erst ein Anfang: Das
Werkstoffinnovationszentrum Innovathèque in Paris
für den Modebereich interessant sind auch hitzesensitive
In der Architektur wiederum spielen Glasfassaden
eine immer wichtigere Rolle. Profitiert man
unangenehm.
unseres Lebens.
The world of products seems to have lost its material
properties. Music, for example, was once
pressed onto records and inserted into sleeves and
is now experiencing almost no materiality between
sale and playback. It is sold to us on the
Interne t in digital form. And even mp3 players
are now so small you can easily lose them in your
breast pocket. Many different areas of our lives
have long since become virtual, stripped of materials.
In them, there is a perceptible distance to objects
which our grandparents’ generation could
neve r have imagined. With new electronic media,
digital financial cash flows and the omnipresent
Die neuen Materialien haben immer
auch eine reaktive Seite, die
sich erst bei der Nutzung offenbart.
availability of information the good old mechanized,
tactile world would appear to have come to
an end – something trend researchers have been
predicting for years.
But if you look at the diversity of new materials which
were or will be presented at events this year such as
Material Xperience by Materia in Utrecht, the Caméléon
exhibition by Innovathéque in Paris (until September
2009), Material Vision in Frankfurt (16 – 18 June, 2009)
and not least of all in innumerable material libraries and
data bases, material appears to be returning in full force.
A paradox? Or perhaps the next step in the development
of our product worlds?
In addition to material components in the traditional
sense, what material laboratories are currently
churning out also has a virtual, intelligent side to it: Textiles
respond to temperatures and change shape, stone
becomes permeable allowing light to pass through, electro-active
polymers expand in an electric field and will
influence the characteristics of flying objects in the future,
as morphing materials. This new material, let’s call
it reactive material, has functions which first become apparent
when actually used. Impressive future visions already
have designers’ hearts beating faster as both the
mechanized, long since outmoded understanding of materials
and the virtual nature of our product world are being
revolutionized by a new culture of materials.
In this revolution, the creative agents of our world,
designers and architects, are at the forefront. Who else
should give a sensible application to an invisible function
so it can be perceived by the user? Yvonne Chan Vili, for
example, examined the use of textiles with interwoven
wires made of shape memory alloys, for room dividers
and wall hangings. Shape memory alloy materials record
form information in their molecular structure. At low
temperatures they can be sculpturally formed but when
warmed, resume their original shape and determine the
alignment of the material weave. Shape memory alloy
textiles can be used in strong sunshine for example,
to automatically darken rooms. The Dutch designers
The new materials always have an
intelligent and reactive side to them,
too – something that does not emerge
until they are used. Dines’ artificial
leather, for example (on the left)
changes color if stretched. Hydrospan
plastic by Industrial Polymers
(on the right) can absorb water.
Frederik Molenschot and Susanne Happle are changing
the urban image with an intelligent material: With a special
surface coating they turn sober concrete stepping
stones into a floral pattern when it rains. The hidden decoration
only becomes apparent in public places and
footpat hs when it is wet, establishing a new urban sign
language. The new development named “Solid Poetry”
was presente d by Droog Design back in 2006 at the
Mila n Furniture Fair, and now the first construction with
flower concrete has been completed in Eindhoven.
That said, all of this seems to be just the beginning:
The Innovathèque materials innovation center in
Paris is now presenting a whole range of new creative
materials at the Caméléon exhibition. Through September
it will be presenting, among other things, plastics
that change color according to ambient temperature
(Magicolor von IPS), artificial leather which changes
colo r when stretched (Dines), panels which light up
footstep s (B.LAB Italia) and plastics which absorb water
and expand (Industrial Polymers). Of particular interest
to the fashion industry are heat-sensitive suit materials
(Sommers Plastic Products), which change color slightly
when warm. The material was recently used by Calvin
Klein for his men’s collection. In architecture on the other
hand, glass facades are playing an increasingly important
role. In winter we benefit from more light and
warmth but in summer the radiation which passes
through glass can become unpleasant. Composite glass
with thermotropical properties which can change its
transparency and re flection properties depending on the
light radiation offers help here. The Fraunhofer IAP in
Potsdam is working on thermotropical, highly reactive
cast resin for windows which reflects solar rays – invisibly
and without complex controls no less! The material
revolution has only just started. Designers and architects
are called upon to make use of the new and to convert
technical potential into sensible product worlds – in a
demonstration against the immateriality of our lives.
Der Mann der Materialien
Mr. Material speaks up
handelt – und man will herausfinden, was das
Was inspiriert Sie?
Interview: Gerrit Terstiege (Gerrit.
stammt. Also benutzte ich sehr sinnliche
Formulierungen, zum Beispiel „finger skinny“, um
ein dünnhäutiges Material zu beschreiben, oder
„steamy shower“ zur Beschreibung der Qualität von
Transparenz.
Chris Lefteri (left page) has fallen
for materials. After all, there is
so much to discover. For example,
silicon e leather by Dow (right).
Das klingt gut! Warum ist Ihrer Meinung nach das
Thema Materialien gerade in letzter Zeit im Design
so wichtig geworden?
Herstellung dauerhafter Verbindungen verschiedenartiger
Materialien.
einfachere Techniken, in denen etwa neue Verfah -
weiterverwendet. Außerdem glau be ich fest da ran,
Jahrhundert waren.
in zwei Kategorien einteilen: Zur ersten gehören
Materialie n, die irgendeine Form von Öko-Branding
besitzen.
Materials 13
Lefteri schreibt: in „Making it“
(Laurenc e King Publishing, 2007)
über Herstellungsmethoden und
immer wieder über spannende
Mate rialien wie etwa Airglass
(link e Seite), das zu 99,8 Prozent
aus Luft besteht, somit das leichteste
Festmaterial der Welt ist
und wunderbar isoliert.
Lefteri writes: in Making it (Laurence
King Publishing, 2007) about production
methods, and about materials
such as Airglass (left page) which
is 99.8% air, and thus the lightest
solid material in the world and
an excellent insulating material.
Glauben Sie, dass in 100 Jahren viele Produkte aufgrund
neuer Materialien völlig anders aussehen
werden als heute?
Wenn man versucht, solche Dinge vorauszusagen,
läuft man Gefahr, völlig danebenz liegen, also lass e
„Produkt“ verstehen, etwas weit weniger Greifbares
Was Materialien angeht,
Mr. Lefteri, you have so far published seven books on
materials. You work as a consultant, you blog about
material s, give talks and have staged a number of exhibitions
on the topic. What started your interest in materials
in the first place?
The same reason that I got into design, which was simply
that I was curious to find out about stuff. It’s like that
moment as a child when you stumble upon something,
either natural or man-made, and you want to find out
what it is, where it came from and what it’s made of.
This curiosity has never abated, and when I had the
opportunit y to write a book, it was like being invited to
produce something that would get across what I knew,
like having an excuse to find out about what I didn’t
know. This first book was, in many ways, an experiment
into how I could find interesting ways of telling stories
about these materials that were relevant to design. The
more I played about with the ideas for images and layouts,
the more I realized that there was something quite
important about the way designers use materials that
was missing at that point.
What inspires you?
One of the main points of inspiration comes from food.
For example, I was recently asked to write a book on that
topic, but approached it like a design project. I believed
that if I could talk about materials and engage readers in
a way that transmitted a very strong emotional connection
with materials through text and images, then I would
be able to get to the heart of this topic, and bridge the
gap that exists when you don’t actually have a sample
in your hands to feel, test, smell and all the other things
we designers do when we play with materials. I always
wanted to get away from the dry technical language of
the traditional approach to materials that comes from
engineering and science. So I would use very sensorial
words, like “finger skinny” to describe a thin-skinned
material or “steamy shower” to describe a sort of translucency.
Again I wanted to evoke in the reader a snapshot
of the material that would make them want to embrace
it in the same way that cookery books make us
want to cook and eat.
That sounds tasty! Why do you think the issue of materials
has become so important in design lately?
It’s a whole range of issues coming together at the same
time. From one direction there is the focus on all areas
of design that has become much more experiencebased.
This means that designers need to have more
design tools available so that they can create these experiences.
This also feeds into branding and communication,
and materials clearly have a very strong role to
play in these areas. We also have this strong growth of
interest in the environment, and clearly the types, sourcing
and processing of products and interiors and their
Chris Lefteri jedes Jahr die
At the 100% Design trade fair in
London, Mr. Material Chris Lefteri
curates the exhibition 100% Materials
every year – time and again a veritable
paradise for product designers.
material make-up is at the heart of addressing this issue.
And a third strand is the exponential growth of technologies
today, which is really exciting, and we all know that
especially de signers want to discover and apply this new
and really exciting stuff.
What has been the most relevant development in the
field of “new” materials?
Again, it’s not about a single development, more about
many areas of research that often overlap. Bio-mimicry
and nanotechnologies are finding their way into all sorts
of materials, not just the well-known textile- and glass
coatings with self-cleaning properties, but also in the
area of permanently bonding dissimilar materials. There
is also the area of composite materials that has had
huge impact on construction, aerospace and transportation.
One of the most interesting new materials in this
category is a ceramic that is based on nacre, the substance
that lines the shells of crabs, that combines the
hardness of ceramics with the toughness of metals. But
there is also less high-tech technology that creates a
new class of plastic moulded products that use sawdust
– a by-product of the timber industry – and up to 50%
wood fibre. I also think that in the future we will see the
production of materials and products become much
more intertwined.
Give me an example, please.
For example in nature, the growth of plants and the
productio n of material for that growth march in lockstep.
This eliminates the whole man-made process of making
a material and then converting it into a final product as
we do with machines, a process that consists of many
different steps of forming, finishing and transportation.
A lot of people believe that what physics and mechanics
was for the 20th century, biological engineering will be
for the 21st century.
In the hands of the right people that may hold true. But,
speaking of nature, it is obvious that environmentally
safe materials, recyclable materials, have gained a lot of
attention during the past few years. How can designers
convince a company to use them, even if they are possibly
more expensive?
I think that it is more important that designers get a little
more creative with what constitutes an ecomaterial. I
think we can separate this area into two categories: the
first being those that have some kind of “eco” branding
and the second being those that are non-eco labels, but
because of their physical properties can reduce weight,
can be processed using little energy or can be easily
recycle d. These are much harder to spot in terms of being
“eco” but can be just as, if not more, sustainable
than many so-called “eco materials”.
Do you think in, say, 100 years, many products will look
completely different than they do today because of new
materials?
People who try to predict this kind of thing always get it
completely wrong, so I have no predictions. The next
100 years could potentially result in the concept of a
“product” evaporating, and what we mean by a product
being something much less tangible than we have today.
At the moment, our relationship to products and objects
is to a large degree feeding an emotional hunger rather
than facilitating functionality, which, in the main, is what
products were about a 100 years ago. In terms of materials
I do think that materials like plastic, wood or metal
will be obsolete, and the only things that will be made
of those materials will be antiques from our own century.
A fairly safe prediction would be that these material families
will have evolved to the extent that there will be hybrids
and new biomaterials that are made of different
raw ingredients blended together. Also, I always felt that
the future would belong to a single material that could
be tailored to any number of applications, a single material
that would take a minimal amount of energy to convert
into new products.
Materialdesign beinahe unabhängig voneinande
r kombiniert werden – etwa dank
neuer Verbundmaterialien, Nanotechnologie,
Photokatalyse und intelligenter
Sensori k. So sind mit hochwertigen Schichtstoffen
ähnliche Effekte – von hochglänzend
bis seidenmatt – zu erzielen wie mit
satinierten Gläsern. Und speziell behandelte
Aluminiumbleche sind optisch nicht
mehr von Edelstahl zu unterscheiden, aber
man hinterlässt auf ihnen keine lästigen
Fingerabdrücke mehr. Von besonderer Bedeutung
sind dreidimensionale Strukturen:
Metalle können geschäumt werden und
bei leichtem Gewicht und einer homogenen
18 Materials
Struktur beinahe beliebige Formen annehmen;
Compounds und Sandwichkonstruktionen
vereinigen sogar gegensätzlich scheinende
Eigenschaften unterschiedlicher
Ausgangsstoffe.
Suvarnabhumi-Flughafen in Bangkok.
Nebe n diesen synthetischen Materialkreationen
gibt es auch einen starken Trend
zu Naturwerkstoffen – vielleicht wird es
soga r in absehbarer Zeit gelingen mit
pflanzlicher Stärke eine breite Palette an
Biokunststoffen anzubieten, die uns unabhängig
vom Erdöl macht. Eines aber ist
klar: Die technische Erfindung ist immer
nur Teil einer Innovation. Genauso wichtig
ist ihre Anwendung zum richtigen Zeitpunkt
– und hier sind wieder die Designer gefragt.
Multifunctional materials. Natural materials
or high-tech, aesthetics or functionality?–
Innovativ e materials for technology, design
and architecture. While it is not rare for design
products such as furniture and clothing
to attain cult status thanks to star designers
or trendy brands, the materials used to produce
them often go without mention – and
wrongly so. For the new generation of innovative
materials is markedly different from
its predecessors. Whereas only a few years
ago the magic word was still “function”, now
the trend is moving in the direction of “multifunction”.
Yet how can contemporary
mate rials live up to our way of life, which is
shaped to an ever increasing degree by mobility
and flexibility? Owing to function-specific
adjustments, the dividing lines between
ceramics, glasses, metals and plastics are
noticeably blurring. Appearance and technical
properties can be combined almost independently
of each other by means of customized
material design, for example, thanks
to new composite materials, nanotechnology,
photocatalysis and intelligent sensory properties.
Thus similar effects, from high gloss to
silk matte, can be achieved with high-grade
laminates as with satin-glazed glasses. And
looking at them, we can no longer differentiate
specially treated aluminum sheets from
stainless steel, only you don’t get annoying
fingerprints on them anymore. Three-dimensional
structures are particularly important
in this regard. Metals can be foamed and
with a light weight and homogeneous structure
can assume almost any form; compounds
and sandwich constructions even
combine the seemingly opposite properties
of different source materials. Innovative
elastic gel materials are particularly flexible:
Semi-liquid, semi-solid, as seat cushions
they mold themselves to the shape of the user
– and that without using environmentallyharmful
softening agents. Three-dimensional
textile spacer fabrics are flexible and
in addition ensure good air circulation.
Fiber glass fabric is not only used to reinforce
textile concrete. And other textiles are even
able to reduce the energy consumption of
large buildings thanks to low-emission coatings
or improve the acoustics of a room
by means of an open-pore structure, as at
Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok. Alongside
these synthetic material creations there
is also a strong tendency towards the use
of natural materials. Will we perhaps even
succeed in the foreseeable future in producing
a wide range of bioplastics using vegetable
starch, finally putting an end to our dependence
on crude oil? In any case, one thing
is clear: Technical invention is always only
one part of an innovation. Its application
at the right time is just as important – and
this is where designers come in once again.

was funktional, technisch machbar, im Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis
vertretbar und in der Zielgruppe akzeptiert ist. Dieses Know-how,
“, erklärt Nina Saller, Senior Color & Material Designer
Welcome to the designaffairs materials archive. Munich-based company
designaffairs GmbH is one of the few design agencies in the
world with its own Color & Material Design department. The unit,
which was founded in 2001 and is headed by Michael Lanz, includes
specialists with extensive experience in the areas of color, materials,
manufacturing technology and trend research. They test which new
colors and materials suit a particular brand. They know what is
functional, technically feasible, justifiable in terms of the price / performance
ratio and accepted by the target group. This know-how,
which is continually expanded, forms the basis of the Color & Material
Design team’s work. “The fact that materials are playing an ever
greater role in design is anchored in a long-term socio-cultural
trend, the so-called ‘New sensuality’ ”, explains Nina Saller, Senior
Color & Material Designer at designaffairs. After years of acoustic
and visual over-stimulation, people are once again longing for tactile
and olfactory experiences. Thus, in order to set themselves apart
from the competition, new surfaces in product design are a field
with a future. Be it tactile IMD, injection-moldable leather or soft
polyurethane skins, with novel haptic experiences products can stand
out positively from the rest, rouse emotions and impress users. The
Color & Material Lab offers a good overview of the state of things
with its exhibition of materials and colors for the consumer goods,
architecture and automobile industries. Here, 12 partners, including
Bayer MaterialScience, Designpanel and Merck Effect Pigments,
Möglichkeiten des Kaltfolientransfers.
Gestaltern, die sich über die Einsatzmöglichkeiten
von Kaltfolien informieren
möchten, bietet der Prägefolienhersteller
Kurz einen hauseigenen Beratungsservice
an. Denn der Kaltfolientransfer ist eine
recht junge Druckveredelungstechnik,
dere n Möglichkeiten vielen noch unbekannt
sind. Im Bogenoffset lässt sich die
Kaltfolie inline über zwei Standarddruckwerke
applizieren: Im ersten Durchgang
Stellen haften bleibt. Danach kann der
Boge n mit Offsetfarbe bedruckt werden.
Per Kaltfolientransfer können Bedruckstoffe
schnell und kostengünstig mit Metallic-Effekten
oder holografischen Designs
veredelt werden. Auch anspruchsvollste
Aufgaben wie filigrane Motive, volle Flächen,
feine Aussparungen und Halbtonbilder
lassen sich damit realisieren, da alles
registergenau überdruckt werden kann.
Weil sowohl Farbe als auch Folie aufgerastert
werden können, eröffnet sich
eine Fülle gestalterischer Möglichkeiten.
Schwierigkeiten bereitet allerdings die
Simulatio n der Farb- und Metalleffekte
am Monitor, auch die Erstellung von
Proofs ist nicht möglich. Praktische Hilfsmittel
für Designer sind daher neben
dem Beraterservice von Kurz Musterdrucke,
wie etwa auf Silberfolie gedruckte
CMYK-Farbtabellen.
Possibilities of cold foil transfer. The stamping
foil manufacturer Kurz offers an inhouse
consulting service to designers who
wish to find out more about the possible uses
of cold foils. For cold foil transfer is a very
young print finishing technique, many are
still unaware of its possibilities. In sheet offset
printing, cold foil can be applied inline
via two standard printer units. The first time
it goes through, adhesive is applied to the
sheet, while on its second round the foil is
pressed all over so that the parts where adhesive
has been applied stick. Then the sheet
can be printed with offset color. Using cold
foil transfer, printing substrates can be quickly
and cost-effectively refined with metallic
effects or holographic designs. It can even
be used to realize extremely challenging designs
such as filigree motifs, single-color surfaces,
fine gaps and halftone images, as everything
can be overprinted with great precision.
The fact that both the color and foil can be
screened on a raster offers a wealth of creative
possibilities. However, the simulation
of the color and metallic effects on the monitor
is problematic, and it is not possible to
create proofs. Thus, alongside the Kurz consulting
service, sample prints such as CMYK
color charts printed onto silver foil are a
practical aid for designers.
Insulating colors. The pigment specialist Eckart has added a innovative
series of effect pigment concentrates to its product range. The
Shinedecor pigments, which are free of binding agents and solvents,
enable users to design their walls not only in a creative, but also an
environmentally-friendly way. The pigments reflect up to 50 percent
of the heat that usually finds its way outside back into the room. In
this way they help insulate the building and contribute to heating
cost savings. Various concentrates based on aluminum, gold-bronze
and pearlescent pigments can be used to imitate numerous classic
and new materials. They are simply added to standard paint mixes.
Virtuelle Materialwelten. Angesichts der
Fülle an Materialien ist es für Hersteller
nicht immer leicht, die optimalen Werkstoffe
für neue Produkte auszuwählen.
Selbst nachdem alle technischen und funktionalen
Aspekte berücksichtigt wurden,
bleiben oft viele geeignete Materialien
Hier helfen
Prototypen, deren Herstellung jedoch zeit-
und kostenintensiv ist. Eine Alternative
sind virtuelle Modelle, wie sie der VR-Spezialist
Technicon Design anbietet. Von
Taschenkollektione n für Louis Vuitton
über Sportprodukte für Adidas bis hin
zu Lackoberflächen für die Automobilindustrie:
Technicon Design fertigt unter
andere m virtuelle Prototypen, die maßgeblich
zur endgültigen Materialwahl beitragen.
Zur Digitalisierung neuer Materialien
werden deren Oberflächenstrukturen
sorgfältig eingelesen. Ihre Beschaffenheit
wird in einzelne Komponenten – wie Farbe,
Glanz und Relief – zerlegt und dann in
einem Shader wieder zusammengefügt.
Dieser legt fest, wie sich unterschiedliche
Lichtbedingungen auf den Werkstoff
auswirke n. Auf dieser Grundlage können
später virtuelle Prototypen gefertigt werden,
mit denen sich die Materialität des endgültigen
Produkts unter unterschiedlichen Bedingungen
visualisieren lässt. Als Basis stehen
hierfür verschiedene Softwareprodukte
zur Verfügung. Für Technicon Design bietet
die Anwendung und Verknüpfung der
26 Materials
Autodesk Produktfamilie Maya, Showcase,
Paint und AliasStudio eine extrem leistungsfähige
und zielführende Möglichkeit,
Produkte realitätsgetreu umzusetzen.
Virtual material worlds. Given the plethora
of materials available, it is not always easy
for manufacturers to choose the best ones
for new products. Even after they have considered
all the technical and functional
aspect s, there are often still many suitable
materials left. At this point at the latest
the question arises, which of them will show
the new product off to its best advantage
aestheticall y too. This is where prototypes
can help, although they are expensive and
time-consuming to produce. One alternative
is virtual models, as offered by the VR specialist
Technicon Design. From bag collections
for Louis Vuitton through sports products
for Adidas to painted surfaces for the
automobile industry, Technicon Design’s
products include virtual prototypes that considerably
contribute to the final selection of
materials. To digitalize new materials, their
surface structures are carefully read. Their
composition is broken down into individual
components, such as color, shine and relief,
and then recompiled in a shader. This program
determines what effect different lighting
conditions will have on the material.
Later, virtual prototypes can be made based
on this information, which can be used to
visualiz e the materiality of the finished product
under different conditions. A variety of
software products are available as the basis
for this. For Technicon Design, using and
combining the Autodesk product family
Maya, Showcase, Paint and AliasStudio offers
an extremely efficient and effective way
to realize products that are true to reality.
Zodiaq in neuen Farben. Gleich um zwölf neue, trendgerechte Farben
erweitert DuPont das Angebot seines erfolgreichen Werkstoffs
Zodiaq.
zertifizierten Anteil an Recyclingmaterial gerecht.
Zodiaq in new colors. DuPont has added 12 new, trendy colors to
its successful Zodiaq range. Hitherto, the hard-wearing surface material,
which can be worked like stone, in the Concrete Block collection
has only been available in six lightly sanded matte tones. Now
the company has added six polished versions to the range. Also new
are the four pastel shades in the Fresh Graphica collection. The jet
black tone Midnight Black, with its fine, smooth-polished surface,
is in line with the continual trend towards black materials. The naturally
warm brown tone Earth Brown is particularly worth mentioning.
It is made of 50 percent recycled glass and thus meets the ever greater
demand for products with a certified percentage of recycled material.
Controls in the screen printing process.
Irlbache r Blickpunkt Glas GmbH specializes
in glass controls that can be used in
variou s ways and at the same time are produced
in an eco-friendly manner. Using the
patented production process IMPAtouch, the
specialists apply sensors and printed circuit
boards together with all the design elements
directly onto the glass panel using screen
printing. In this way the glass itself virtually
becomes the PCB. The cost-intensive and
Frei formbares Displaysystem. Mit
constructiv PON hat der Stuttgarter Systemhersteller
Burkhardt Leitner constructiv
ein flexibles und vielseitiges Architektursystem
für temporäre Bauten im öffentlichen
Raum entwickelt – etwa für den Messebau
oder Ausstellungsbereich. Als Vorbild für
den Verbindungsstab diente ein moderner,
filigraner Skistock mit geringem Transportgewicht
und Ladevolumen und dennoch
hoher Stabilität. constructiv PON erfüllt
diese Voraussetzungen und eröffnet Designern
und Architekten aufgrund seiner
Flexibilität außerdem zahlreiche neue Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten.
Denn das Basissystem
lässt sich zwar flach zusammenlegen
und durchaus auch rechtwinkelig zusammenbauen,
doch die biegbaren Präzisionsrohre
können außerdem dank ihrer extremen
Rückstellkraft bei gleichzeitig hoher
Elas tizität unter Spannung in der Längsachse
radial verformt werden. Sobald losgelassen,
springen sie in ihre ursprüngliche
Form zurück. Durch dieses Materialverhalten
lassen sich etliche skulpturale,
amorphe Freiformen schaffen, wie sie im
Display bereich zuvor kaum möglich waren.
Freely formative display system. With
constructi v PON, the Stuttgart-based systems
manufacturer Burkhardt Leitner constructiv
has developed a flexible and versatil e architec
ture system for temporary buildings in the
public space, for instance for trade fair construction
or exhibition area s. A modern, delicate
ski pole with a low transport weight and
volume and yet high stability served as the
template for the connecting rod. constructiv
PON satisfies these preconditions and also
opens up numerous new design possibilities
to designers and architects owing to its flexibility.
For although the basic system can be
folded flat and assembled at right angles, the
flexible precision tubing can also be radially
warped on the long axis under tension while
maintaining high elasticity, thanks to their
extreme restoring force. They jump back to
their original form as soon as they are released.
A material that behaves in this way
can be used to create any number of sculptural,
amorphous, free forms that have hardly
been possible thus far in the displa y segment.
Der von Schock entwickelte Werkstoff
Designe r und Studios wie Platinumdesig n,
Formative stone. Cristadur is an ideal material
for producing sinks. Created by Schock,
the material is like cast stone, but consists
of NanoGranite, a material mixture of fine
quartz sand and strongly bonded acrylic.
Neither liquids nor flavorings or bacteria
can penetrate the tightly sealed surface, and
moreover the structure is extremely shockproof
and resistant to scratches and abrasion.
In contrast to what its stone appearance
would give us to think, the material, which
in aesthetic terms resembles ceramic, feels
warm and silky. Designers and design studios,
such as Platinumdesign, that have
alread y designed sinks for Schock set great
formed and precisely worked and,
with accentuated polishing, enables effective
matte / gloss contrasts.
sondern im Foliengießprozess: Das
Ergebnis ist Keraflex, eine auf keramischen
ultradünne, flexible Keramikfolie.
Das Material verbindet die Eigenschaften
von Porzellan mit der Charakteristik und
Flexibilität von Papier. Designern erlaubt
es so eine unkomplizierte Formgebung:
Stanzen, Prägen, Schneiden, Falten, Biegen
sind zahlreich. Nach dem Brand
erhält man feinstes transluzentes Porzellan,
das sowohl für industriell produzierte
Serienartikel verwendet werden kann wie
auch für individuelle Unikate.
Delicate porcelain. Kerafol, a company
based in Upper Palatinate, does not produce
its white gold using the typical slip casting
technique, but rather foil casting. The result
is Keraflex, an ultra-thin, flexible ceramic
foil based on ceramic raw materials and
a binding agent matrix. The material combines
the properties of porcelain with the
characteristics and flexibility of paper,
thereby enabling designers to form it very
simply, by stamping, embossing, cutting,
folding, bending or laminating it: There
Beton mit Schönheitsfehlern. Die Freiburger Manufaktur Villa
mit reizvollen Oberflächenfehlern versehenen Betonmöbel und
-objekte spezialisiert. Die markanten Oberflächen der villarocca.
roughcrete genannten Betonlinie werden auf verschiedene Weise
erzeugt.
Flawed concrete. The Freiburg-based manufacturer Villa Rocca specializes
in the production and design of unique concrete furniture
and concrete objects with attractive surface flaws. The striking surfaces
of the concrete range called villarocca.roughcrete are produced
in various ways. On the one hand a special concrete formula deliberately
creates porous surfaces strewn with depressions and holes,
which in part enable observers to see the rusty iron rods. Another
method of producing beautifully flawed surfaces is using rejected
formwork panels for the last time, assembled into new formwork
compositions. Textile structures can be cast in the concrete as delicate
reliefs using a further technique.
Kvadrat-Showroom in Stockholm vorgestellt.
Hier zeigt sich, dass Textilien eben
nicht nur für Modedesign, sondern auch
für Interior Design und temporäre Architekturen
von großer Bedeutung sind.
Fine fabrics. The book “Fine Fabric” presents
innovative textile materials and their
uses. A total of 60 international architecture
and design projects illustrate with text and
images the wide range of design possibilities
offered by textile fibers. Among other things,
it presents Jean Nouvel’s Hotel Puerta America
in Madrid and the Kvadrat showroom in
Stockholm, designed by Ronan and Erwan
Bouroullec. This work shows that textiles
bear great significance not only in fashion
design, but also in interior design and temporary
architectural structures.
Vom Online-Portal bis zur Produktentwicklung.
Gute Kontakte sind in jeder
Branche wichtig. Im Interiorbereich bietet
sich ProductConcept als Bindeglied zwischen
Herstellern, Designern, Produktmanagern
und Zulieferern an: Über 450
Unternehmen haben sich derzeit im Online-
Portal von ProductConcept zusammengeschlossen.
Das Netzwerk gibt seinen Mitgliedern
die Möglichkeit zur gegenseitigen
Kontaktaufnahme und bildet die Basis
für weitere Dienstleistungen des Unternehmens,
zu denen auch die Organisation von
Gemeinschaftsständen auf Fachmessen
wie der Interzum, der Material Vision, der
Euromold und der Materialica zählt. Die
Kontaktvermittlung ist allerdings nicht
der einzige Unternehmenszweck: Product-
Concept steht allen Beteiligten beratend
zur Seite und bietet Unterstützung bei der
Entwicklung neuer Produkte an.
Fundgrube Materialdatenbank. Produktentwickler
und Designer suchen ständig
nach neuen Materialien, die den an ihre
Produkte gestellten Anforderungen gerecht
werden. Es sind zwar viele innovative
Werkstoffe auf dem Markt – doch wie genau
sie beschaffen und für welche Anwendungen
sie geeignet sind, darüber kann
kaum jemand den Überblick behalten.
Materialdatenbanken sind dafür nütz -
liche Informationsquellen. In München
Material-Scouts Material
Connexio n, der neben einer Online- und
mehreren Vor-Ort-Bibliotheken auch
Recherch e- und Beratungsservices anbietet.
Über den Versandhandel Modulor sind
Werkstoffe auch in kleinen Mengen zur
Anschauung zu beziehen. Auch Stylepark
Materials – ehemals Materialworks – stellt
online zahlreiche Materialien mit Detailfotos
vor und bietet Materialboxen zur
Bestellun g an. Darüber hinaus gibt es
noch viele internationale Materialdatenbanken
wie MatWeb, die Materials Research
Society (MRS) oder die Innovathèque
in Paris. Auch Konzerne wie Bayer
und BASF bieten professionellen Interessierten
oft Zugang zu Mustern. Und
selbst Museen bieten Einblicke in die
Welt der Materialien – das Gewerbemuseum
Winterthur etwa hat kürzlich seine
Werkstoffsammlung öffentlich gemacht.
Materials databases galore. Product developers
and designers are constantly looking
for new materials that satisfy the demands
placed on their products. There are plenty
of innovative materials on the market, but
it is barely possible to maintain an overview
of their exact composition and the uses for
which they are suitable. To this end, materials
databases are useful sources of informa -
tion. In Munich, the designaffairs’ Color &
Material Lab features an exhibition on materials
and colors for the consumer goods,
architecture and automobile industries, in
Stuttgart there is the Raumprobe archive.
In Cologne, there is a branch of Material
ConneXion, the internationally active materials
scout, which offers research and consultation
services as well as an online library
and several local ones. We can also have
a look at current and classic materials in
small quantities via the mail order company
Modulor. And Stylepark Materials, formerly
Materialworks, presents numerous materials
with detail photos online and offers material
boxes, which can be ordered. In addition,
there are numerous international materials
databases such as MatWeb, the Materials
Research Society (MRS), or Innovathèque
in Paris. Larger companies, such as Bayer
and BASF, also often offer professionals
acces s to samples of materials they produce.
Even some museums offer insights into the
world of materials. Only recently the Gewerbe
museum Winterthur opened its extensive
collection of materials to the public.
