WELCOME ADDRESS OF THE MINISTER FOR EDUCATION,CULTURE AND SCIENCE
Diseases that impair the body’s central and peripheral
nervous system and that can be treated by operation
are at the heart of the treatment spectrum in neurosurgery.
The main focus is on brain tumour surgery,
skull base surgery, interventions in extra-cranial and
intra-cranial cerebral blood vessels to treat aneurysms
and bleedings from the brain as well as interventions
to treat hydrocephalus, which will also be the subject
of the scientific discussion during this Annual Meeting.
The German Society of Neurosurgery has set itself the
task of advancing science, research and practical
activities in the field of neurosurgery and of supporting
the further development of diagnostic and treatment
methods for the benefit of the patient. With this specialist
platform it is thus offering national and international
researchers an excellent opportunity to exchange
the latest scientific findings in the field of neurosurgery.
Bearing these facts in mind, I am delighted that the 54 th Annual Meeting of the German
Society of Neurosurgery is being held in the capital of the Saarland.
Prestigious events such as this clearly indicate the scientific excellence displayed by the
Medical Faculty of the Saarland University. With its high levels of third party funding,
large number of research projects, a special research area and two postgraduate colleges
in cellular and neurobiology, the Medical Faculty is one of the main pillars of the
Saarland University and makes an important contribution to the further development of
the academic profile of the Saarland University.
Important steps have already been taken to further improve the research infrastructure of
the Medical Faculty. Being built on the campus of the University Hospital in Homburg is,
for example, a research building which will open up new horizons for the main scientific
fields, especially those of neurosciences, oncological research and human and molecular
biology. Furthermore, a new course of studies has been introduced in medicine, that
of human and molecular biology.
This important international conference of specialists will provide further impetus for
research in the field of neurosurgery. I am sure that the Annual Meeting will help to secure
the advantages of the Saarland as an important university medical research location
nationally and internationally.
I wish all those participating an interesting and successful exchange of experience and
know-how.
