SOUTHERN GERMAN BREEDING ASSOCIATION
THE HOME OF THE GERMAN SPORTHORSE – DSP

ince 2014, the Southern German breeding associations
have been breeding the joint breed “Deutsches
Sportpferd” (German Sport Horse), “DSP” for
short. This breed was established by the horse breeding
associations of Brandenburg-Anhalt and Saxony-Thuringia
in 2003. Horses such as the 2006 Bundeschampion
and internationally popular sire Quaterback or the
2003 world champion of six-year-old dressage horses,
the exceptional mare Poetin I, who were both part of
the first crop of DSP foals in 2003, have become the
breeding association's figureheads.
In 2014, the breeding associations, which have been
associated under the umbrella of the Southern German
Breeding Association (AGS) for more than 20 years, took
things one step further and decided to start breeding
the joint breed “Deutsches Sportpferd”, while still keeping
the independent associations to look after breeders
in their own area.
Apart from a uniform breeding aim, the objective of
the five associations is to market their horses through
Süddeutsche Pferdezuchtverbände Vermarktungs
GmbH, the associations' marketing body, which was
founded in 2003. The uniform breed, or rather, brand
“Deutsches Sportpferd” has provided the individual
breeds Württemberger, Bavarian Warmblood and Zweibrücker
with a new standing on the national and international
breeding scene.
Today, the homeland of Deutsches Sportpferd covers
the complete breeding area of the Southern German
breeding associations, which is more than half the area
of Germany. With almost 10,000 registered broodmares
and more than 500 warmblood stallions, this has
become the second largest breeding association in Germany.
The main goal of the ambitious breeders is to
produce quality sport horses for all disciplines and categories.
The excellent character traits of the horses required
in the stud book also appeal to horse enthusiasts
who do not necessarily wish to compete. In leisure riding,
quality horses are characterised by a good character,
health and vitality, features which guarantee a
happy and enjoyable life with the horse.
German sporthorses are among the top horses in international
top-level eventing: With fischerRocana FST, La
Biosthètique Sam FBW, Halunke FBW and fischerRicona,
Michael Jung, Olympic, world and European champion,
goes from strength to strength. The mount of one of
his greatest competitors, William Fox-Pitt from Great Britain,
is also a DSP horse: Chilli Morning.
In the show jumping course, Aragon Z with Christian
Ahlmann, the current German champion Cashmaker
with Denis Nielsen, Colorit with David Will, FST Dipylon
with Michael Kölz and many more are DSP flagships. In
dressage sports, DSP is represented by Girasol with Nadine
Capellmann, Riccoletto with Matthias Kempkes as
well as aspiring young talents such as Bundeschampion
DSP Belantis with Beatrice Buchwald and FBW Fair play
H with Ines Knoll.
