original articleTh ere is a high correlation between the IVA and theFVA [ 17 , 19 , 21 , 23 , 25 ]. The visual outcome of our patientcollective is good as compared with international standards. The percentage of patients who recovered to a FVAof at least 20/40 lies between 5 and 56 % in the literature[ 16 , 17 , 20 – 27 , 35 ].In the first month of life, child abuse is a commoncause for injuries [ 37 ]. No case of child abuse wasrecorded in our patient collective, and we could find onlyone comparable study [ 19 ], which became aware of oneopen globe injury caused by child abuse. There is no evidencethat the type of injuries we describe is often linkedto child abuse, in contrast to other ocular pathologies, such as isolated retinal hemorrhages, the classical findingsof a shaken baby syndrome [ 38 , 4 ]. But nevertheless,we believe that the fact that only two studies [ 19 , 20 ] evenmention whether there was a case of child abuse showsthat this issue could be underestimated. It remains amomentous duty for every physician to raise this topicboth thoroughly and sensitively. The prognosis of open globe injuries in children isheterogeneous, depending on the IVA and injury mechanism. We observed a gender difference with significantlymore boys than girls in our patient collective. Furthermore, the injury objects and the age at injury varied bygender. Some children with open globe injuries still cannotbe saved from unilateral blindness despite modernsurgical techniques, but more than half of them achievea good visual outcome of 20/40 or better.Ethical standards statementThis analysis is carried out according to the Declarationof Helsinki and has been approved by the Ethical Committeeof the Medical University of Graz.
