Service Lisbon styleSatisfied Rotarians and medical convention delegates confirm Lisbon’sreputation as a top European meeting destination, as do statisticsobtained from surveys.n Rotarian city. The Rotary International Convention from 23 to 26 June 2013 made historyas the largest event ever held in Lisbon. Satisfied 25,000 delegates from 204 countries becameambassadors for the host city. The theme of the convention was “Lisbon – A Harborfor Peace” in line with the Rotary theme for the year of “Peace Through Service”, and thecity remained true to that by providing magnificent service. The venues for the plenaryevents were the Pavilhao Atlantico and the Centro de Reuniões da FIL, offering four pavilionsof 10,000 square metres each, both of them in the Parque das Nações on the bank ofthe Tagus. Delegates were able to take the metro to the city centre and airport from thenearby station. A yacht bedecked in flags on the river drew attention to Rotary International’sEnd Polio Now initiative throughout the convention.This philanthropic Rotarian campaign seems tailor made for Portugal’s capital, whichis a leading host of medical conventions. Convention bookings have remained stable,which is a boon given Portugal’s troubled finances and status as the poorest country inwestern Europe. However, the country will be receiving 5.6bn euros as the next tranche ofits bailout funds in November and has also been able to adjust its growth forecast upwardsslightly for 2013. Portugal occupied 17th place in the ICCA’s rankings in 2012 with 213 internationalmeetings.
