[trade shows product]PathfindingFor its tenth birthday “access 2013” received an extensive evaluation. The next dates for the exhibition remainunknown, but on the floor spring 2015 was being negotiated.n Hofburg Vienna. “access is Austria’s leading professional tradefair for conferences, incentives, and events,” said Dr. Petra Stolba toopen the press conference for 2013 on 7 and 8 October. The directorof Österreich Werbung (Austrian National Tourist Office, ÖW) addedthat “access has evolved into Austria’s meeting point for the industrysince 2004.” Its tenth birthday was celebrated by 1,800 professionalvisitors – every tenth a hosted buyer – from 15 countries and200 national exhibitors. “The 10th birthday is also an opportunity toconduct an extensive survey of exhibitors and visitors, in order to furtherdevelop the access trade fair,” announced Stolba. Not becausethere are less visitors than the previous year, she explained, and it isharder every year to mobilise them, but because after ten years itsimply was time for it.That the ÖW and the other four promoters such as the AustriaConvention Bureau and the Vienna Convention Bureau have yet notannounced the next dates for the event has kindled speculation.Voices in Vienna, Salzburg, and Tyrol already speak about access2015 in March. Enough time for a new concept to accommodate thechanging needs among visitors for participation. Some are thinkingout loud about an alternating format, with one year trade fair, thenext a specialised conference.Where the search could lead to is demonstrated by the access academy, which has introduced interactive formats with its motto “Knowledgelies in the audience – activate, share, profit!”. “The logisticsphase will be replaced by the content phase. In the next two days wewill attempt to go down new paths with the access academy,” explainedChristian Mutschlechner, justifying the step. For the directorof the Vienna Convention Bureau it was clear that “this reinventionincludes failure, but one can learn from it.” Florian Felder from “austrianbusiness and convention network” (abcn) of the ÖW supportsthe idea: “This year we consciously wanted to move away from merelylistening to talks and watching to experiencing.”To this end “access” has engaged organization developer IreneKernthaler-Moser from Mehrenergie Consulting and event organiserAndrea Bauer from the agency “vereint”. The two of them movedaround the exhibition with their “mobile access academy” and surveyedvisitors on trends. “We can find almost any piece of informationon the Internet – I don’t have to go to a conference for that anymore.People at a conference want to get in touch with one another,to exchange information, discuss, learn from one another,” saidKernthaler-Moser. She knows that “the conferences of the future willhave to create the framework for personal contacts and establishingrelationships.”The first attempt, “Fit for Future – Is participation a relevant successfactor for a conference?”, drew almost 80 curious listeners to theAntekammer reception chamber who congregate around the standsof Upper Austria. Kernthaler-Moser was thrilled. “What a great reaction!”Every other hand rises in the air, a couple more during the networking. The participants had to explain to their neighbour when aconference is good for them. The answers collected by the audiencedid not surprise anyone. The exchange of ideas on interactive formatsdid not really get going. The second meeting “Living Transformation– How will knowledge be transmitted at a conference of the future?”at the Tyrol and Vorarlberg stand was only heard by 15 participants.Hans Strub from mf KEG Technik was not there anymore, but praisedthe effort. “One always learns something,” said the Swiss planner. Hecame for the exhibition, which is “brilliant” for his event planning. “Ilook at the places and can visit all nine of Austria’s federal states atonce here.” And that is what he will write in the evaluation.
