The fifth report of the Intergovernmental Panel on ClimateChange (IPPC) published on 27 September 2013 gives seriouscause for concern: an increase in the rate of sea level rise, acidifyingoceans, melting glaciers. The panel is 95 per cent certain that CO2emissions are the cause. Unless CO2 emissions from factories, carsand power plants, which have increased by half in the last eightyears, can be slowed down, the planet will be around 3.7 degreeswarmer by the end of the century – with grave consequences.Transforming the energy industry in Europe is a major priority. EUCommissioner Günther Oettinger wants to invest 5.8bn euros in newpower and gas lines. 10 per cent of the projects to be supported willbe implemented in Germany. Since the German Renewable EnergiesAct came into force in the year 2000, the country has been regardedas something of a sustainability pioneer. 80 per cent of electricity requirementsand 60 per cent of total energy requirements are to becovered by renewable energy by 2050.
