To me personally what impressedme most was how a small team of volunteers was able to set up sucha huge event. This was possible due to their dedication and motivation.Apart from running a very high delegate number – what makes the RotaryInternational Convention special?A Rotary Convention is an unique event. The Convention itself has plenarysessions for four days, including two similar opening ceremonies toaccommodate all attendees. On the other hand there are more than 100104 CIM 6/2013
[interview destination]persönlich hat am meisten beeindruckt, wiees einem kleinen Team Freiwilliger gelingenkonnte, einen Event von dieser Größenordnungauf die Beine zu stellen. Dazu bedurftees viel Engagement und einer starken Motivation.Was macht den Rotary-Kongress neben derriesigen Teilnehmerzahl so besonders?Ein Rotary-Kongress ist ein einmaliges Event.Der eigentliche Kongress mit den Plenarsitzungenläuft über vier Tage, und zur Ansprachealler Kongressteilnehmer gab es zweivergleichbare Eröffnungsveranstaltungen.Daneben wurden über 100 inoffizielle Veranstaltungenabgehalten, die von diversen Rotary-Organisationenin der ganzen Stadt ausgerichtetwurden, plus vier lokale Events und20.000 qm Ausstellungsfläche.Das Motto des Kongresses von 2013 war„Lissabon – ein Hafen des Friedens“. Warumist Lissabon „ein Hafen des Friedens“?Das Jahresmotto lautet „Frieden durch Einsatz“,weshalb wir uns die universelle BestimmungLissabons, ein Hafen der Verständigungund Toleranz zwischen den Kulturenund Religionen zu sein, zunutze unddie Stadt zu unserem Hafen des Friedens gemachthaben.Welche Unterstützung haben Sie bei diesemGroßprojekt bekommen?Das Projekt wurde vor allem von den Teilnehmernder Rotary-International-Treffen unddem Gastgeberkomitee des Kongresses vonLissabon vorangetrieben, also von den Rotariernund unseren Zuarbeitern.Welche Hilfestellungen bekamen Sie vonder Stadt Lissabon?Wir haben von der Stadt und dem LissabonnerKongressbüro einen finanziellen Anreiz in Höhevon 630.000 Euro und 1,2 Mio. Euro von derportugiesischen Tourismusbehörde (Turismode Portugal) erhalten. Diese Summen habendie neun Millionen Euro Kongresskosten nichtgedeckt. Der Fehlbetrag wurde durch die Anmeldegebührfür Rotarier finanziert.Was war die größte Herausforderung bei derOrganisation dieser Großveranstaltung mit25.000 Delegierten?Es fällt mir schwer, da eine besondere Herausforderungzu benennen. Von der Visabeschaffungfür die Einreise von Teilnehmernnach Europa, die Organisation von Unterbringung,Transporten, Sicherheit undÜberwachung von Massenveranstaltungen,die Logistik zur Unterbringung von über 200Ausstellern aus fünf verschiedenen Kontinenten– die Herausforderungen ergabensich täglich und lauerten hinter jeder Ecke.Wurden für das Event neue Veranstaltungsorteoder Einrichtungen benötigt?Nein, wir haben die uns in der Stadt zur Verfügungstehenden Locations genutzt. Allerdingswaren einige Umbaumaßnahmen erforderlich,wie die Einrichtung von elf doppeltenschalldichten Holzwänden für dieBreakout-Sitzungen.Was war Ihre unvergesslichste Erfahrungwährend des Kongresses?Das war für mich die Schlusszeremonie mitdem Konzert für den Frieden und die Verabschiedungder Teilnehmer aus 204 verschiedenenLändern mit neu geschlossenenFreundschaften und neuer Motivation,selbstlos zugunsten der Allgemeinheit tätigzu werden, im Sinne von „Serve above Self“,dem Leitspruch eines jeden Rotariers. Katharina Brauerunofficial events hosted by many Rotary Organizations all over thecity, plus four local events and 20.000 sqm of exibithion.The theme of the 2013 convention was “Lisbon – A Harbor forPeace”. Why is Lisbon “a harbor for peace”?The year theme was “Peace trough Service” so we linked the universalvocation of Lisbon as a harbor of mutual understanding andtolerance between different cultures and religions making it Lisbonas our harbor for peace.Who in particular supported you with this huge project?The project was mainly supported by the Rotary International Meetingsstaff and the Lisbon Convention Host Committee – so by theRotarians and our staff.What support did you get from the city of Lisbon?We got from the city and the Lisbon Convention Bureau a financialincentive of 630.000 euros and 1.2 million euros from Turismode Portugal. These incentives did not cover the nine million eurosexpenses of the Convention. This gap was funded by the Rotariansregistration fee.What has been the main challenge in organizing this 25.000 delegateevent?It is very difficult to point out a specific challenge. From visasenabling delegates to travel to Europe, housing needs, transportationand crowd control and security, the logistic to accommodatemore than 200 exhibitors from five different continents, the challengeswere everyday around the corner.Have there been any new locations or fresh set-ups in particularfor this event?No, we used the venues that we had in the city but we had to makesome constructions like eleven double wood wall sound proofrooms for breakout sessions.Which has been your most memorable experience during thisevent?The most memorable experience for me was the closing ceremonywith the concert for peace and the farewell of the attendees from204 different countries taking home the new friendships and newmotivation to serve above self: the motto of every Rotarian.
