The Beauty of Chalk
Sassnitz harbour city is the birthplace of the healing chalk.
Presumably as early as 1910 the chalk had been used for
therapeutic treatments. When in 1932 scientific proofs had
been made about its use and effects, the path was open
for medical use of the snow-white material. In 1935 the
harbour city officially became “chalk healing spa”. From
1945 to 1963 Dr. Friedrichkarl Wünn had applied chalk
treatments in the local hospital as part of health cures. The
association “Rügener Heilkreide e.V.” was founded in 2000
and successfully reanimated chalk treatments. Its members
spread the knowledge of the use and effects of this natural
and regional healing material. Today healing chalk is used
again in numerous institutions for health and beauty. On
Jasmund peninsula there are the famous chalk cliffs and
close to Sassnitz the raw material is quarried and prepared.
The Rugian healing chalk consists of 98 percent calcium
carbonate. Visitors and natives enjoy it in baths, packs,
masks or peelings. Depending on the treatment, chalk may
stimulate circulation, metabolism and care for purification.
A chalk treatment indulges the senses and is an experience
belonging to every holiday stay on the island. As a warming
pack it prepares the body for a massage, it may alleviate
skin problems and cares for the acid–base homeostasis.
Physiotherapist Schneider in Kurhotel Sassnitz for instance
uses chalk. Arcus, sales partner for Kreidewerk Rügen
GmbH, offers “Original Rügener Dreikronen Heilkreide”
and a wide range of natural cosmetics developed out of
chalk.
